The line "father, father, father. We don't have to escalate" really gets to me knowing how he died at the hands of his father. So sad.
Facts
I was thinking THE EXACT SAME THING....!! How ironic and so sad. Marvin Gaye is a LEGEND and NO ONE was as sensual and smooth. Peace
I remember being about 11 when I heard that news. Couldn't comprehend someone killing their child.
@@MeIn321 Yes I agree as most people would. Unfortunately, some parents who have not been shown how to love by their own parents, lack the nurturing and communication skills to connect even with their own family. Sad and unfortunate indeed.
RIP Marvin Pentz Gay Jr., who also spelled his surname as Gaye (April 2, 1939 - April 1, 1984)
Well, let's not forget he was high as hell when he attacked his father. Sad nonetheless
‘What’s Going On’ is one of those rare songs that causes you to stop what you’re doing and absorb the message. Truly an outstanding piece of artistry, to stand the test of time.
This is one of the great songs of all time!
From perhaps the best album of all time.
@@johnbrowne3950 Amen!
Fact
Robert Palmer'S Mercy Mercy Me does a short cover of it that's good too.
@@readhistory2023 mercy mercy me is also from Marvin Gaye from the same album What’s going on.
In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine redid their 500 Best Albums of All Time list and put What's Going On as #1. This is the opening track and leads into an incredible collection of songs about a man coming home from Vietnam and seeing all the issues in the world, even beyond about the war.
It's a great album but it's not even close to being the greatest album of all time. Nothing but pandering in that vote, I'm not taking anything away from his talents or the quality of the album but absolutely not the greatest album of all time.
@@edwardcapobianco2975 It's subjective, man. No need to get stringent or bring in notions of "pandering." No need to escalate, brother.
@@genespleen "strident". Nowhere near the best album and it was obvious pandering.
A masterpiece. I have absolutely no problem with WHAT’S GOING ON being the #1 album, the greatest of all time. It transcends. It’s perfect. It’s unassailable.
Rolling Stone trashed Led Zeppelin's albums. Their opinions are not to be taken seriously.
Marvin Gaye is the definition of "cool" with his wise lyrics and smooth as silk voice. This artist was ahead of his time in trying to bring awareness to the inequalities and struggles in the world during that period which are still as relevant today. Such a shame that his life was cut short. Just love this man. Rest in peace Marvin knowing that your contributions to the music industry and messages of love for one another were beyond generous. 🦋
His father shot him because he was gay
_"Baby I'm hot just like an oven, I need some lovin'"_ (from Sexual Healing). Probably the deepest and most profound lyric ever set to music. Anyone who can rhyme oven with lovin' is a lyrical genius!
Marvin was a visionary. He not only wrote the lyrics to this beautiful song, he did the arrangement, played the piano and even recorded himself as background . The words are hauntingly prophetic and are even more relevant today. Gone too soon. R.I.P. Marvin. 💔💔🇨🇦🇨🇦
Best bass playing ever......................
Motown wanted no part of protest songs but Marvin Gaye had the power in the industry to make it happen.
One of the greatest songs of all time
That voice is pure honey 🍯 marvellous Marvin gaye
Marvin Gaye was a musical genius, and we lost hm way too soon!
I can't believe Brad never heard this! You've lived a sheltered life! Iconic. Great protest song, something lacking today. You have to appreciate the great talents of that era. I still can't believe Marvin's father ended his life. RIP.
I remember the day I heard the news break. One of those memories...vivid images of what I was doing and where I was, all these years ago, stayed with me.
"War is not the answer, for only Love can conquer Hate".
Such a powerful line and one I have tried to live my life by. It's songs like this that still give me hope.
Also, this is one of the most important songs ever written and recorded. The sad part is that this was released in 1971 and it's needed even more today.
You got that right and not the disgusting foul mouth songs of today especially rap
@@FUBAR1986 Time and tastes change.
Yet, as much as songs like this point out war atrocities, we apparently haven't learned anything.
All time classic. It also features what is known as a 'flat six' modulation. The bulk of the song is in E Major but then modulates (changes key) to C Major, which is subtle and also dramatic.
I was just 3 houses down from Marvin when he was shot. I vividly remember my heart stopped for a second and my face immediately turning to my friend and asking him, "what's that gun fire?" ....Within seconds the sky was covered with news media helicopters. A moment I will never forget !!
cap
Marvin, the silky smooth voice. He was a genius.
Time to explore Marvin Gaye. He made so many good and deep music. Beginning with this album. But there are more. Don't hesitate!
Marvin doesn't get the love he deserves A music God in any category
Love how he overlapped his vocals. So beautiful
Took me a long time to realize this wasn’t a question but a statement. Really a perfect song.
This classic connects me to my soul, always...😌
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “Lets Get It On", “I Heard Through the Grapevine", "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Can I Get a Witness"!!!
Also his "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"(w/Tammi Terrell)!!
These are the hits, but... Don't forget those ones too: Inner City Blues, Trouble Man, Got to Give it Up (with an outro where you see where Prince got the mosterd), I want you... And even the early stuff for instance with Tammi Terrel... He was a great one and as so many great ones, died too early.
@stefcas yes, many great songs for Marvin, and Marvin with Tammi ! One of the greatest duos!
"Let's Get It On" for sure. Best opening of any song ever.
Oh, Tami!!!!
This was truly a golden age in music.
I love Gaye!
This Brad & Lex is what we call Motown 😁🇨🇦 grew up across the Detroit River from Motown , this is lazy hazy summertime music .
1971. A tumultuous time. The Vietnam war was winding down. Nixon had promised to end the war and he was at least keeping that promise, anyway. But when he promised, "I am not a crook......, well we know how that worked out.
As I said the war was winding down, but the protests continued. I was in agreement with the protests.
Today, knowing all I now know, I'm not so sure we were right.
Gerald Ford showed his metal in ending the war and his quick decisive actions in the Mayaguez incident. He earned my respect and I was a liberal in those days.
That being said, this is an iconic song and right or wrong, it's a page in history.
Ah, 1971. I was 16 years old and just beginning my truly rebellious years. lol
Brings back fond memories.
Loved it when the Soul Train DJ would say Mister M-a-r-v-I-n Gaye. Then Marvin would proceed to bust a move. Awesome. Great songs from MG.
I did a lyric analysis of this song when I was in 9th grade because of how chilling he made this song
One of the greatest singers of all time.
one of the greatest songs ever from one of the greatest artists of all time , in the motown documentary it shows how Marvin put this song together , pure genius
Kudos to Lex's father for introducing her to classics. Here's hoping you both continue that legacy with Jack. Such a powerful song!
Fantastic album…. One of the best ever recorded and definitely the pinnacle of his career…
Oh man this brings back memories. Ecology, war, love not hate, ah I miss this. This is my favorite one by Marvin.
In Honor & Memory Of Him,, Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up" & "So In Love"...R.I.P. Curtis🙏❤
This song would be an instant number 1 hit if it were released tomorrow. The whole album is brilliant.
One of the finest vocalists ever to have lived.
I can't even imagine hearing this soulful masterpiece for the first time in 2023. It would be like discovering a third hand.
The voice of marvin,marvellous
Yall need to do more Motown! 🎶 🎷
If only we followed this old school music into modern times we may be in a better place.. in the ideal world that is.. RIP Marvin!
Marvin Gaye was the MAN.
My second favorite song of all time! The album this from is pretty great as well. It really was a stretch for Motown to put this out, a social observation. But the times, they be a changing. Marvin had a fantastic voice. You'll notice what sounds like background singer but it's Marvin. He's just grooving in the background. Coolness.
This is such a Beautiful Message. We should all live by, if only we could see life like Marvin.
One of the greatest albums ever recorded... !!
One of the greatest ever by one of the greatest ever.
Hey guys what's up! I can't believe you're doing a reaction to this song. I have this album on original vinyl. Not a scratch. I was just listening to this album two days ago. You have to hear it on vinyl. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
One of the best songs of all time. A Change is Gonna Come also.
"Trouble Man" is my absolute favorite song from him. The extended version.
I thought when i clicked on i was going to get a better reaction to a beautiful song ... listen to the words man
If you guys haven’t heard it already you should also give a listen to one of his heavily sampled songs called “I want you”
Thank you for sharing. This song was revolutionary in its impact on pop music.
1971 was a banner year for great albums, and this was one of the best.
I instantly recognize Marvin Gaye's voice anytime I hear it! Such an amazing talent. Can't tell u guys how many movies I've heard this particular song in.
Marvin Gate was such a great singer, songwriter and innovator. An absolute legend. Thank you guys. You are great!!!
_"Baby I'm hot just like an oven, I need some lovin'"_ (from Sexual Healing). Probably the deepest and most profound lyric ever set to music. Anyone who can rhyme oven with lovin' is a lyrical genius!
Smooooooooth bass line.
Got to give it up ! Marvin's greatest jam!!
A great singer, one of the best soul voices! 🎶🎶🎶❤️
The messages ring true for humanity ❤️❤️❤️❤️R.I.P. Sir 💔🕯️🥺✌️
One of the greatest songs to come out of Motown. But also one of the saddest. Note the line “father, father, we don’t have to escalate “ only to him being killed by his father.
one of the most beautiful things about the music of this era, was the lyrics were an attempt to look at our society and fix its ills...!!!!
Very iconic Vietnam war protest song. I remember every night on the news as a high school kid, watching the protests in the streets, and wondering if the war would end before I turned 18 and graduated. My Brother went to Vietnam 3 tears earlier. Everyone in every neighborhood across America, had a brother, cousin or friend, that was in Vietnam. The same could be said of WWII in the 1940s. War is always horrible, but sometimes necessary.
Saw him in Seattle!!! 4 hr. Concert! We drove from Vancouver Canada to Seattle and it was well worth it! I still have the album!
This song was released 1971, five years before I was born. I remember (as a very young child) hearing this song and being profoundly depressed. I didn't learn about racism until I was in first grade Sherwood Elementary School (Memphis TN) from a student named Michael Cook.
How can you not know this song, are people living under a rock 😳
very powerful song. Cyndi Lauper covered this song on her True Colors album, it was the 3rd single released from that album. Check out her video; see if she gives it justice. Many say she did...
This is one of the greatest start-to-finish albums of all time.
Lex, you have the ability to instantly get right into the groove . I grew up in Motown area in the 50s and 60s, Ray, Dionne, Marvin and Tammi, Stevie, Al Green, The Temptations, The Tops, The Supremes, Martha, Smokey, Roberta, Donny and gave me a life heart felt love of Soul music. All through the later decades, Isaac, Barry, Luther, Teddy, Anita, on and on, so many Great voices. This album dropped when I got back from Vietnam in 1971, it was on another level, the acclaim that it received was unbelievable. Wore out the vinyl over and over. This album is a masterpiece and you need to react to other songs on album. Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me. Still considered top 5 albums ever made. Just ask your parents and grandparents about this album and what it meant to them. Changed my life. React to Lisa Fischer and her Grammy masterpiece, "How Can I Ease The Pain".
MARVIN GAYE - Everybody Needs Love
Marvin's masterpiece!!!
Marvin Gaye is so smooth 🔥
The definition of a timeless classic
This and Marvin’s “Inner City Blues” are two of the best protest test songs of the late 60’s & 70’s. Especially “Inner City Blues”, 50+ years later it’s still too relevant.
This song and I seem to remember this entire album was almost all Marvin Gaye himself. He played most if not all of the instruments and did all of the vocals.. even the ones at the 'party'... Anyway... this album has affected me for over 50 years. RIP Marvin!
I'm pretty sure he didn't play most of the instruments. I think that's him on piano, and he was once a drummer, so it could - possibly - be him on drums, but it probably isn't; as someone else has said, it's James Jamerson on bass, and Marvin didn't play guitar.
@@TheoZoffrok perhaps its just drums and piano.... and maybe he doesnt even sing the vocals and its someone else... 😀
Berry Gordy did not want Marvin to do this album. Years later, he admitted he was wrong. One of the greatest albums of all time
Only Marvin - loved him - such an amazing talent. You had to be there in those days to get him.
This song just puts me in such a good state of mind, it's almost magical!
Your just hearing this? One of the greatest ever!
This is more than a song. Classic among classics.
the story was that Marvin called Barry Gordie late at night , and told him of a song he wrote and it was spirtual, it was this song, it is iconic and spiritual
Marvin is so smooth.
From his soul❤
GREAT, GREAT music when music was great.
Just perfect and beautiful.. I don’t know how this cat get you diggin 🌎 people 🙏🏻
The #1 song from the album that Rolling Stone once ranked #1 on its list of Top 500 Albums. Marvin Gaye was already an impressive pop hitmaker before he evolved into a more socially conscious and sophisticated singer, but still a hitmaker. No doubt you know his later Sexual Healing and Let's Get It On.
Beautiful, beautiful song.
Symphony of soul!
That James Jamerson bass line is SICK!
Marvin Gaye got his start with Motown where he had all those beautiful duets with Tami Terrell! He broke away because wanted to do more serious music and this was one of the songs he did about what was going in socially at that time! People were protesting the Vietnam War as well as civil rights! The thing about this song is that it is still relevant today with all the police brutality and protesting about many injustices! Great song!❤❤
With the album he processed his grief for the tragic death of Tammi, who died a year earlier.
"What's Going On" was written by three golfing buddies who also happened to be Motown hitmakers: songwriter Al Cleveland, Four Tops member Renaldo "Obie" Benson and singer Marvin Gaye, who added lyrics and worked on the arrangement. Gaye wanted the Originals to record the song, but Benson and Cleveland prevailed upon Gaye to do it himself.
Until this song, Gaye rarely participated in the songwriting process. For this album, he took control of the production so he could make a statement as an artist. Motown management was skeptical, but Gaye was an established star and had enough power to pull it off, going so far as to use an orchestra on this track.
Gaye's lyrics in this song were inspired by the stories his brother Frankie told him when he came back from the Vietnam War.
This was one of the first Motown songs to make a powerful political statement. Stevie Wonder and the Temptations were also recording more serious and challenging material, which was a radical departure from the Motown hits of the '60s. The song had a tremendous impact because listeners weren't used to hearing social commentary from Gaye. As Jackson Browne said in a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone: "No one was expecting an anti-war song from him. But it was a moment in time when people were willing to hear it from anybody, if it was heartfelt. And who better than the person who has talked to you about love and desire?"
(Songfacts.com)
At last! a reaction to the "The Prince of Soul"! Man!!
I live in Motown, this song never gets old....
The beautiful dreams of a generation, which sadly melted away by the end of the 60's, pretty much like the cake left out in the rain at MacArthur Park.
Great song from a great artist, such a real song
The Master. Still relevant today. Bar none, my favorite song of ALL TIME. FUNK BROTHERS PLAY THE INSTRUMENTS. ❤️
so cool that Rolling Stone's "Top 500 albums of all time" gave "What's going on" the number 1 spot..i was actually pretty shocked, because it's not a rock LP. But hey, I'm black and not gonna argue with a panel made of judges from the three major recording labels, Rolling Stone and Billboard Mags.
One of the ten best singles ever.
A singular voice. Marvin Gaye will never be repeated..
I think that Marvin Gaye did ALL of the vocals on this entire album. Produced by Quincy Jones.
This is the song that was playing as I drove my son to the airport when he went to boot camp
Brilliant track, one of my best top 10 songs of all time!
