How to clean a plugged exhaust screen - spark arrestor on a Stihl Weedeater (if it's bogging)

  • Here is a quick video showing how I like to clean the exhaust screen / spark arrestor in my Stihl 2 stroke weedeater / line trimmer. The model in this video is the FS 55 R but this guide applies to just about any machine out there, fs 36, fs 38, fa 40, km, km90, km110, km110r, (kombi) that has an exhaust screen in the muffler, blower, trimmer, brushcutter, etc. If your weedeater bogs and wont rev, is hard to start, or won't start, and is also very quiet than you are used to, chances are it's a plugged exhaust screen / spark arrestor. A bogging weedeater is no fun, try this!

Thank you for this video. This was exactly what was wrong with my trimmer which I was nearly ready to throw in the trash. I even bought a battery trimmer to replace it. I did not need to use a blower. The screen burst into flames when heating it since it was covered with so much gunk and everything burnt off.

Just a quick thanks. My stepson was using my FS 40and noticed a severe drop in power.

2 different Stihl dealers told me my FS40 needed a carburetor, $50 bucks, i took carb off and cleaned it up and i could not believe any thing wrong with carb, hated the idea of trashing this Stihl Weedeater. as usual i turned to youtube and watched this video, i took one screw out of muffler and the screen was clogged w/carbon, i used a torch and compressed air and weedeater runs like new ! I LOVE torches. I don't like to use a wire brush as I find in my experience it scratches the material the screen is made from and thus carbon sticks to the scratches and it builds up faster than the first time.

Are there any safety considerations to make before pulling apart a whipper-snipper? Like accidentally igniting something via a spark; or not unplugging something that might cause it to start up?

    • @machinesnmetal

Absolutely, I would recommend you drain all the fuel from the tank and pump out the carburetor with the bubble to make sure there's no fuel in the system at minimum and then make sure to remove the spark plug before starting work on the machine.

Greetings from the UK. No good for me as my unit has the solid metal exhaust, no access to the mesh. I had this problem on my Stihl FS55 strimmer. .Solved it by giving the inside of the exhaust with a good dose of carb cleaner, shook it around for a few mins, rinse - repeat - worked perfectly! Let it dry out before firing up though 🔧as it's flammable.

    • @TheSandwichMonster
      @TheSandwichMonster 4 года назад +1

Have you tried cleaning your carb or putting a kit in? If you're mechanically savvy replace the fuel filter and the diaphragm in the carb and that should fix your issue. I'd bet my bottom dollar it's carb related. I've replaced hundreds of carbs on those due to failing pressure tests.
They're not expensive to replace (carb) and often if there's a piece of dirt in the check valve or somewhere even a sonic clean won't bring it around. Might be able to get away with a new diaphragm.
Check your local dealer or get the numbers off your carb and bring them to a shop and they can get you a carb kit/carb. Well worth the money as the FS55 is a great rig for the average home owner.
90% of the time it's a plugged exhaust screen we see. But there's a fair few replaced carbs too.

Only speaking from what I know I remember back in the day we used to have a similar device in the end of our dirt bike tail pipes so that when you were riding in a dry forest in the summertime you did not shoot out some Sparks and set the forest on fire it's called a spark arrestor I do believe they used to check dirt bikes on the trails to see if people had removed the spark arrestors as it would raise the chances of a forest fire. So in my mind the spark arrestor in a trimmer is there mostly for the same purpose.

No BS, just straight to the job at hand and you not only showed me and others how to fix our Stihls, but you replied to my 2 problems! I really appreciate your help and when I get the part, I'll let you know how this 68 year old lady made out. Thanks again.

@@Edward-fs6wyYou have a model with a catalytic converter. What happens is that the piece of catalytic converter inside the muffler clogs up with carbon over time. It causes the machine to run poorly. I had the same thing happen with my trimmer. What I did was I just bought a regular fs55 muffler off of eBay (they are about $15 or $20) so that you will have a cleanable spark arrestor like shown in the video.

While I take no responsibility for your choices, a lot of people run these without the screens on. They're just there to prevent the liability to the manufacturer around the obvious fire hazards of dried grasses, combined with shooting sparks and the like.
If you're aware of it and understand, it's your option as the owner to go naked.

Your exhaust port itself might be closed up with carbon, try taking the muffler completely off and look in the port and see if it's closed up like a cave.
