It's about the kind of friends and lovers and ex-lovers that may not be ever and eternally in your life, but which orbit you as you orbit them. No matter how long between sightings of your satellites, it's as if you just met them last week, last month, yesterday. Each meeting a joy, each one stolen from time, each one precious. Jones is a poet - find the meaning in the heart of her images and make it your own.
The best thing to do is admit your and their mistakes and forgive yourself and them too. Them that gravitational pool that keeps them drifting away and back to you will be broken.

Incredible how Walter Becker's contribution as a producer is tangible here. The soprano sax was his idea and mix perfectly with the song. Great, great work.
First heard this song on a train from Durban to Johburg in 1990. Had no clue about the title or artist but loved it. Took me 34 years to find this gem ❤❤❤ better late..
This song seems timeless. It's always excellent. Listening to it due to Walter Becker's passing. We are losing talented musicians that are not being replaced. Technology has replaced musicianship. It's a shame.
Have faith, amigo.... But instead of waiting for the new talent to arrive, why don't WE be the talent? All of us?huh? Is that really such a crazy idea? Walter Becker sez NO ... And would maybe like to hear some new songs up yonder.... He might get in a fight w some of the angels up there while he tries to rearrange their strings! Just sayin'!
This is by far, one of her most lively video productions, where Rickie actually seems to be having fun. Great album, "Flying Cowboys". Perhaps one of her best creations and collabs w/ an able assist from Walter Becker.
Great matching of song and production. I'm glad someone had the idea to have her call Walter Becker to produce this album. Thank goodness Rickie didn't lose that number.
In all of my long years, I have never listened to a song that reminded me of falling in love that one, true time. I have loved almost all music all of my life, like an addiction. I have had heard very few well-sung, absolutely natural, from-the-gut artistry as hers. Listen to ghost train, or perhaps, if you have the patience, the entire album "Flying Cowboys". That'll learn ya.
+Alec M She can go straight to the deepest parts of yer soul. She has such innate sensuality, her squeexe, Tom Waites (for no man) described her as "the sexiest woman in the world".
I hope so! She deserves it so much. She's obviusly been through a lot and had to deal with insecurity and shyness when she was younger. Her music is made of gold. And the moon is, too. :)
The moment I saw Rickie on Saturday Night Live in 1979, I fell in love with her. I've lost count how many times I saw her live. The last time I finally asked her for an autograph. It's tattooed on my left shoulder.
On this day in 1989 {October 7th} Rickie Lee Jones performed "Satellites" on the NBC-TV program 'Saturday Night Live'... The song reached #23 on Billboard's Alternative Singles chart... The thing that I love about Ricki Lee Jones is that she is so truly unique. She does not sound like all the other cookie cut out singers. That is the definition of a real artist.
I just recently heard "Chuck E's In Love" on the radio. I am Gen X and have a great deal of love and respect for all of the music that's gone through my ears and into my brain so I remember a HUGE AMOUNT of most. I didn't remember this song. I didn't recall this from MTv or VH1 and I graduated from high school in 1989. All that said. It struck me how far ahead of her time Rickie Lee Jones was. This song could easily be covered by some little pop tart and it would EASILY go platinum in a week. You know I am right. Neat song!
Couple of cool little notes about "Chuck E..." It was a hit in the middle of the Disco era and went top five in a week where all the other songs were Disco hits. That week, all the top five were women for the first time in Billboard history on the Hot 100. Lol- Rickie Lee and Donna Summer ruled the charts together!
Flying cowboys is one of those albums that just keeps growing on me, i never tire of listening to it, its good at home or in the car, straight or................, my copy is worn to digital bits
I always think of my best female friend when I hear this song. We were besties in high school in the 80s. We were twinned in a fugitive mind. The closeness we shared has no words, but the essence is captured in this enigmatic song.
Yeah, for the knuckheads who do not appreciate the depth and soul of Rickie Lee's music, here are the words. Probably just like the people who complain at a sunset that they're losing their light with the sun going down. You all are missing the beauty right in front of you!

@Vico649 Indeed..."friends should stick together".
Nice comment.
I played this album a lot when doing my undergrad finals back in 1987.
Sweet little songbird.
There is no-one like her. She is an American Treasure!
Yes...We belong together.....♥️
Yessss😊✌🏾❤
You nailed it. She is a unique writer, performer and person.
She is a treasure for all. Not just America.
Her harmonies with her own lead vocals are some of the most sublime ever recorded. Juke Box Fury blows me away too.
Seconded
Omg these two songs are my favorite
Released as a single in the UK in September 1989.
Even her happy songs make me cry.
I used to hear this song all the time when I worked at Publix.
Incredible how Walter Becker's contribution as a producer is tangible here. The soprano sax was his idea and mix perfectly with the song. Great, great work.
I didn't know he produced this! Thanks for telling us. I think he was incredibly gifted. I worship Steely Dan.
This song wouldn't be too out of place in his 1994 album 11 Tracks of Whack.
RIP Walter. What a wonderful, organic and very real art you created with Rickie.
I think this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. What else is there to say?

Joe Gomez I see what you did there.
We were born forever
We are twinned in a fugitive mind
Friends should stay together and
Light the world with the fugitive kind
So you keep talking in many languages
Telling us the way you feel
Don't stop confiding in the road you're on
Don't quit, you're walking satellites
Walking satellites
She laughs satellites
A room filled with satellites
Ah, walking satellites
We were born forever
Tunneled into the fugitive night
Friends must stay together
Code the world with the fugitive light
I just saw you walking
Ice was reading fortunes by the moonlight
Casting runes on the rooftops and alleys
You'll never read it more than you will tonight
So you keep talking in many languages
Telling us the way you feel
Don't stop confiding in the road you're on
Don't quit, you're walking satellites
Walking satellites
She laughs satellites
A room filled with satellites
Ah, walking satellites
