The reason I know so much about how growling vocals work is deep diving the subject after discovering their music. And I've compared different bootlegs line by line heh. Cuz I was like 12 or 13 when Milli Vanilli got exposed and what can I say I'm a skeptic. And Tatiana's voice is just so good I needed evidence heh.

Not believing she is singing both voices is understandable for a newbie. Refusing to accept that it is all her when someone explains how it works veers into disrespect. Most never take it that far. .

“This autumn feels like funeral to me
    The longest song of grief
And not for what has passed
    But for what shall last
Exhausted nature is tragic and suicidal!
Oh how spectacular she is when she kills herself!
Death throes are slowly crawling to her toes
As the last leaf is falling off her head
    I’m here with her undressed
With a few petals on my breasts
We shared opiates and let the landscaped do the same
I love your warmth but yet prefer to sleep in cold alone
We fixed our eyes up to the sky
To see a flight send us farewell
    Goodbye!
May we see each other next time
So please, come back to celebrate this festival of life!
    Then as now fly!
Today you reached the point of no return
    Now cry! And then die!
Tomorrow I will meet you with your cells restored
    Annual tradition of mass destruction
In the name of total reconstruction
    My biggest source of confusion
The reason of decay and disillusion
Under permanent ice we found breathless paradise
    No, we’re not dead
    No, we’re not dead
    Just enjoying coma
From the ashes of my roots the new me will rise to live again
This is poetry of youth, this is poetry of me and you!”

Some of Tatiana's best lyrics imo. She uses the term perennial in the same way as Don did - the seasonal spring rebirth, after a winter's death. You guys might not relate, but in colder Northern climates we get less sunlight in the winter due to the tilted axis of the planet, and this leads to a definciency in vitamin D and therefore depression. Plus we're stuck inside due to the extreme cold as well. Being from Ukraine this is something Tatiana would struggle with.
    Annual tradition of mass destruction
In the name of total reconstruction
    My biggest source of confusion
The reason of decay and disillusion
Under permanent ice we found breathless paradise

    No, we’re not dead

This is poetry of youth, this is poetry of me and you
She's a poet, writing in her second language. A language two of her bandmates can barely speak just to give you a sense of how foreign it is to them. Very impressive stuff, beyond her amazing vocal ability and the band's great musicianship and songwriting.

Tatiana is _definitely_ trouble heh, and hats off to Alex Lopez, I gotta say. The throat tattoo is the face of mesoamerican dragon-god Quetzalcoatl, tattooed across her voicebox and throat chakrawhich is incrediblyappropriate. And yup basically all of their music is from a very dark place, even light stuff like Beggars Dance. Perennial is about Tatiana's chronic depression getting worse in the winter causing self-destructive feelings, and seems like it was written as a reminder that spring will come and she can make it through. Pit Of Consciousness is a deep dive into her mental health struggles. Home Back is about their experiences when their hometown in eastern Ukraine was caugjt in the 2014 war that set the stage for the current invasion. They guys started composing the music for their next album while stuck in Kyiv under siege during the first months of the war and it's said to be very heavy and darkly melodic which I'm incredibly excited for.

I'm glad that you mentioned how the band often gets overshadowed by Tatiana. I was just telling a coworker about Jinjer and literally told him that it is too easy to focus in on her unique skillset (without mentioning what that was...LOL.) So I make sure I tell folks that when that happens they have to give that song another listen and pay closer attention to the band.
Regarding understanding the growling vocals... Don is correct that sometimes you have to hear a song again to catch some of the words, even for some of us that listen to them all the time. However, for you guys just experiencing the growling vocals, the same rule kind of applies. If you listen to more growling vocals, over time you will start to get better at catching the words. Some folks will have the lyrics pulled up and follow along on a few songs, which can help the brain connect with the audio easier and train your ears.

Tatiana's writing for the extreme vocals is solidly done- she never tries to squeeze too many syllables into too short a passage, & particularly thru growled sections she manages to keep a clarity of diction / pronunciation which is quite remarkable. Unlike most other extreme vocalists, you can make out the majority of what she's saying (once your ear becomes accustomed) instead of my usual sigh-&-reach-for-a-lyrics-sheet moment. They're still the only band with extreme vocals whose music I've spent actual money on, & I got into them initially for the excellent composition of the lads' music & *despite* the vocals.... but integrity is a big thing for me when it comes to music, & it's evident that Tatiana is 100% genuine & "in it" when she's doing her thing on stage, which won me over pretty quick! So much so that Jinjer are now one of my favourite bands out there doing the damn thing!! ;)

The song is really cool lyrically. It's the feeling of autumn, how it's beautiful seeing the season change. But everything dies in the winter and silent. But even though everything seems dead and lost it comes back. She compared the poem to how humans are, how resilient we are and how things will get better. It's remarkably beautiful.

It takes a while to discern the lyrics during the harsh vocals. She does pretty well in comparison to most singers who use the technique but then there are famous songs from pretty much every decade sang cleanly which people mishear the lyrics to. Which is why you can always find lyrics online.
This song is about the changing of the seasons and how people get depressed when winter comes and then the depression lifts when it's spring again. The lyric "annual tradition of mass destruction in the name of total reconstruction" is about how nature deconstructs the beauty and then in spring reconstructs it in an endless cycle. Given that the band is from Ukraine those natural cycles are pretty pronounced as they know them.
She actually goes even lower in their video Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv. Yeah being alone in the house and hearing deep growls would be scary but certainly in the woods at night alone would be worse IMO. Pit of Consciousness is a dark song so she definitely goes dark.

Yes indeed ....for decades women have been doing growling vocals. Many black metal and death bands, and extreme metal bands have female growl frontwomen. The earliest I have seen women doing these vocals would probably go back to the early 1980's-late70's in the underground and smaller metal subgeneras. Even punk bands like Plasmatics back in the late 70's had singer Wendy O Williams who would often have their punk songs with her doing some growling vocals .

When Tati sings she plays with the words, stretching a syllable here, changing a word’s cadence there. “Frantic” becomes “fr-an-tic”, stuff like that, and it does make following the lyrics hard sometimes. I think it’s because she writes lyrics in English even though it isn’t her first language.

Speaking of neck tattoos and being judgemental, react to Judgement & Punishment (One Take Vocal). You won't be disappointed!

With the harsh vocals it’s worth listening with the lyrics. Tati is pretty good at enunciating and you do get an ear for it. Hated this stuff until I heard Jinjer and can’t get enough of them. Amazing live. Stick with them. Try teacher teacher, a sort of hip hop vibe in parts.

There are a lot of women in metal, but not many that do it at the same level as Tatiana. And even those that are, most can’t growl and sing at her level, her range in both and the quality of her tone set her among top tier of metal vocalists, of any gender.

Jinger isn'ty cup of tea despite being a metal head. I loved OTEP when I was in my teens. I REALLY think y'all need to check out In Flames Ropes or Where Dead Ships Dwell. I've been listening to them for about 25 yrs. They're amazing.

That mosh pit was pretty tame. The circle stuff is a "circle pit." That's level one of moshing. Then there's actual "mosh pit" where the slamming and elbows come. Level 2 there. Next is "wall of death." The pit separates into 2 or 3 groups and runs full speed at each other and slam into each other. Level 3. Level 4 is "crowd killing" where one person targets people on the edge of the pit and slams, punches or kicks em. Then of course there is revenge crowd killing 😂😂

They are amazing live. It is hard to understand the growls, I just read the lyrics, and then I start to pick it up. Also, her lyrics read like poems, often with multiple meanings. This one is about how some plants seem to die in the winter, but spring back to life each year. Tatiana feels the same way, she suffers from depression but springs back.

It takes time to adjust your hearing to the growls, you have to listen over and over. Just like some rap you have to hear a bunch to get the lyrics if you don't listen to it all the time. Just know that Jinjer is the best at this style and Tatiana is a super talent.
