Your grandfather sounds like an exaggerated version of my father. He wasn't racist, but he was emotionally abusive and neglectful. He cheated on my mom with three different women. Yet, the day we (me, my siblings and my mother) moved out, he cried. The first time I had seen him cry since his mother died. And even now, he calls us up to ask how we're doing and he's told my mother that she is one of the only people he's ever trusted. I guess men like that simply can't convey their true feelings.
Maybe Grandpa was socially conditioned into racism but at the same time as a self sufficient man, perhaps he couldn't stand seeing another capable man fail due to lack of opportunity. People are complex.
Out of all the people I've ever ran into, no one but you have ever managed to get me thinking so much about my life. Each time I watch one of your commentaries I want to go out and change something, about myself and what's surrounding me. Thanks to you I have a much better understanding of SO DAMN MANY things. You're the man! keep it this way!
I'm kinda tired of CoD but I keep on coming back for these commentaries. This one especially was really, really good. Keep up the good work driftor and keep coming with these amazing, eye-opening videos.
Good commentary I feel your pain bro keep this up and you should be a million subscriber channel you really put lots of hard work and I appreciate that good job keep it up hope you read this message

First video of yours I've seen. It's so rare to find someone so wise on the internet, I deeply appreciate how you are able to talk about such things with measured composure and I hope you will grow in popularity -- it's so important to see that a person or idea is never one-sided. You, Drift0r, are working to make the world a better place.
I think with your grandfather it was more presenting an image that he didn't like black people because that was the society of the South he grew up with, but deep down he didn't actually believe much of what the South's society had taught him regarding blacks and whether they were human or not. I have no actual authority on this matter, my ancestors are Northerners and Westerners, pro-abolition anti-slavery people, so I cannot explain this apparent cognitive dissonance, but that's my explanation of why your grandfather was like that towards blacks.
driftor i just want to tell you that i loved this. also i really like how you're not just some comical nobody! you've affected my day and i hope you inspire me another!
Good and bad is subjective. But if I had to define bad, a bad person focuses on Ego "helping yourself" but completely ignores Empathy "helping others". A good person who is confident focuses on both Ego and Empathy equally.
Driftor thanks for sharing these stories with us, I would really like hear more. Your grandfather seems like a var wiered personality in the way of that he was kinda his own counter part. Thanks again for telling us this story/ stories.
This really is an eye opener. Morality has always been a shaky topic. Sure there are good and bad actions that are pre-preogrammed, but can we really say there are bad people? I don't believe so, everyone makes mistakes, we need to live and learn from them. Actually, there are bad people. But maybe the good people are the bad people? There is no set in stone reality, it is just how we see it. Nothing is said, only gussed.
My dad was so similar to your grandpa. Sadly, he passed away 4 months ago. This video brought back so much memories made me choke a little. Ahhhhh.....
I almost cried during this commentary. Mainly because I feel like I can relate, I am very emotional but can be cruel to others then regret it later. When I'm angry, i used to take it out on others occasionally. I have fixed this pretty well but still, I never feel like I can be a good enough person.
The idea of "good" and "bad" are very hard to pin down. It seems to me that it's too subjective; of course Hitler and Stalin thought they were doing "good," so why does their idea of "good" hold less weight than other ideas of "good?" Of course, in my life, what they did was "bad," but I don't think these two things are possible to speak about in the objective sense.
Aaron S Absolutely, subjective judgement is perfectly fine and a great defense mechanism from people that may hurt you. Just was saying that objective judgments are flawed.
Driftor in my opinion you are the best youtube commentator, you have a constant flow and you never seem to make mistakes in your speech. Your stories and language are usually intriguing and your video quality is on point. Keep up the great work!
Really interesting video Drift0r, I really enjoyed it. One thing, can you not talk about the game so much? It kind of hurts the meaning of the story when you mention something that happens ingame.
I agree with you, I think we can't fault Driftor for it though. He is a sharp, fast paced, intelligent guy and without even noticing his mind probably notices the game and can't help but make a remark about it at certain points. lol
I don't believe we are inherently good or bad. Good and Evil are completely relative terms. We are all Just greedy. Our temptations drive us for better and for worse. Choice in the end is what defines us.
Therapy while playing video games? These are the moments where im proud. Youre having fun and then helping people out as well. Dude i love you. I dont know you. But keep on living good . good karma for you man !
Everyone's a bad person. If you think people are inherently good then try leaving your wallet on a subway. Not to mention we teach children to be good, not to be bad.
I mean no disrespect to you or your family Drift0r but going of experiences in my life, I think that your Grandfather's parents or guardian was incredible strict and maybe abusive to him, because of this and being in the army, all he new throughout his life was strict rules, discipline, intelligence and toughness which probably suggests why he was sometimes appearing to be bad or good to you.and other people. This is just a guess and if I am wrong I hope you didn't get offended but I am simply saying that sometimes to be or to do something good, you have to be bad.
That commentary was touching. Thanks for sharing such a story Driftor. My dad reminds me of your grandfather.Like another poster said I wonder if this mix between good/bad behavior has to do with the way they were raised.I know my father had it hard as a kid.Perhaps your grandfather did too.
These kind of videos you do always put things in perspective for me. For what do we strive was possibly my fave and I often watch it to put help me re-think things.
If I may offer an idea I had towards the end of this video, it sounds like your grandfather had a nature vs. nurture conflict in his life. It seems to me that deep down, he was a good person (offering the financial classes, and the valentines day episode lead me to think this), but the nurture aspect was more prevalent. Without knowing much about his early life, it is hard to pinpoint much on the nurture exactly, but, since it was the south, his anti-black opinions could easily have been because it was what he saw in his daily life, especially while young. As far as the abusive aspect, it is all speculation as to what could have caused that. Anyway, I know it isn't my place to offer any opinions about your family, but this video got me thinking, and when I think, I like to voice my thoughts. Thanks for the insightful video.
I dont even care about the gameplay i just sit back and listen to driftor. Its the the reason I stay subbed to Driftor. I can really relate to Driftor's story my father is very similar...
Your grandfather sounds like a complex person! He sounds very similar to a family member of mine, I thinks it's a mix of control and losing control that makes these people act the way they do! The soft parts are mostly guilt or sines of losing their grip, empathy is truly lost on a man like your grandad I known from experience ! Thanks for sharing
drift0r amazing commentary. These types of commentaries that are so deep and make people take a step back and think about their lives and possibly others arround them are why I enjoy watching your videos, and as far as I can tell they're unique to you and your channel.
Even tough i don't know you personal, i still respect you and kinda look up to you. your stories are fascinating in a very special way. im glad you made the most of your position as a child. you are one of the few youtuber who makes, beside cod etc, very helpful vids, keep it up!
What makes you a good or bad person is really hard to tell for us humans. The guy on the cross next to Jesus even got forgiveness in his last minutes. We are filled with both goodness and evilness, but we should use our head an heart when making decisions
Very well put together, its an unfortunately relatable topic and most people seem to go through something similar. Glad to see someone who can discuss it maturely.
Drift0r, sadly there are people that are not good at expressing their love. Much like my father. He has anger issues and he can sometimes get frustrated because of work, come back at home and being not in the mood to talk to anybody. He could shout at me for anything, really, but deep down inside I know that he loves all of us (The Household). So much, as you can see it in him when he's in a good mood, pretty much the coolest dad ever. However he was strict about some things, like even if he had the money he wouldn't simply agree to me buying a video game. I'd have to sit for an hour to convince him why, for example I have Black Ops 2 and I want to get Black Ops 3, he still is going to think that there is no difference and both are shooters, so it's a waste of money. And he was like that with everything. Buying a new console, buying a new phone, a new PC, a new TV etc.
Your grandfather seems to be just... sad, overall. From being born in a depression inducing period to the point of the "rage attacks", it just seems like he was a very frustrated man. Maybe it was not a mental disorder or anything like that as much as an accumulation of... shere disappointments, you know ? The constant paradoxes you mentioned makes me wonder if your old man didn't even quite believe what he stood for in appearance, but just couldn't help it. Dragging yourself out of the concepts you were raised in is not exactly an easy task, afterall. Based on what you said, your grandfather didn't have much money, never got to work on - or even figure - what he actually enjoyed doing and was driven purely by the desire to survive and sustain his family. That leads me into the conclusion that perhaps he suffered silently and discounted everything in a way that he didn't intend to in the first place - and when he finally realized it how much that had affected the way the few people that he cared for felt about him, it was already too late. Perhaps he never had or gave his family the life he wanted to. Perhaps he never got to be the man he intend to be. A really sad, fascinating story.
I am 15, and still, you are making commentaries better than any other youtuber, not in the way of gameplay ( because obvious there're better players who I also enjoy watching) but in the way of life. These commentaries make you think, some of the commentaries can be recognised in your own life. Sorry for the bad english because I come from Belgium.. Keep up the good work !
I didn't particularly like The Fault in Our Stars, but there was one line I thought was pretty damn good. To paraphrase: the existence of broccoli does nothing to help us enjoy chocolate.
He probably said things like, "Oh, those black people with their stupidity and laziness. I better fix them up." The man spoke what he thought of black people! He thought they were uneducated and lazy. So what? He expressed opinion. Even if it is a negative opinion, it still is his. He identified things he thought were bad about black people and tried to fix them. This shows straightforwardness and kindness!
you cant really tell that. its not that simple and if it was Driftor would have probably mentioned it in more detail. From what he told it sounded like his grandfather was somehow very upset about things in the world, but you know, some people just cannot really open themselves in a way that other people do. And to say that he showed "straightforwardness and kindness" doesnt have to be true as well. And i dont want to be insulting now, as i dont really know much about the situation and didnt know the man himself, but someone who donates a lot of money can be a douchebag as well. No matter how much he donated.
The reason why it is racist is because his opinion is a stereotype that many other people think and he generalized an entire raced based on only what he was told and through experience
I believe good is defined by selflessness and never being an ass to someone, people like martin luther king. The best example of good is Superman, he's kind, selfless, and even though he could rule the world with his superiour everything, he puts his life on the line everyday to make the earth better Bad is defined as small time bad deeds, like driftors grandfather or thiefs, they are simply a nuissance, they care about no one but themselves. Evil is people who are terrible, cruel, will kill his own mother for a reward, people like Hitler, who discriminate, senselessly murder and are worse than the scum of the earth. The best example of evil is the Joker, i know im using alot of comic book references but hear me out. He has no reason for destruction and murder, he just blows people up, gases them leaving humiliating smiles, he has no intentions, he just kills, and doesn't care, and never will. This is my thoughts on good bad and evil, thank you for reading this long story but i wanted to express my thoughts.
Even though I agree with you. on the superman thing he doesnt really risk his life since hes invincible and died once. Id say someone like Spiderman or Batman or Captain America. Humans that can actually lose their lives at any moment. But im just being a nerd. Sorry :/.
While I don't know all of your tastes Driftor, i remember a commentary about titanfall where you talked about liking anime (Attack on Titan) and a really good relation to this question/commentary are the antagonists of the popular anime "Naruto". In the show, rarely, if ever are the "Villians" or the opposition to the protagonists just straight up evil, like in other shows such as DBZ where the villians just want the joy of having power or destroying the world. Most, if not all, have differing ways and reasonings for their actions, including troubled pasts and goals that are, for the most part, good. One of the later main antagonists, Nagato and Pain, brutally fight against Naruto while striving for the same goal: Universal peace and an end to war, to break the endless cycle of revenge. On top of that, the antagonists reflect on their actions if/when they are defeated or have a change of heart, one of the most definitive being the early antagonist Zabuza. Down under the tough and cold exterior he really cared for Haku, who was like a son to him. Just my two cents though. If you read this, and haven't tried watching it before, i suggest you give it a go driftor. The show is one of the most popular for a reason!
I don't even play cod, but you're commentary definately had my attention. As far as you're grandfather goes I can't pass judgment on him as I've never known him personally but from what you say he seemed to be a very conflicted man internally.
Drift0r Drift, I just want to say, he probably did such things, i.e. bash on the black community and teaching them finances, as a sort of... "Guarantee to Heaven." Imagine it like this, one bad act is -1 and one good act is +1. When you are born, you start with a 0 balance of god's "bank." He must have wanted to genuinely see everyone succeed and prove himself wrong, or he may have wanted to go for heaven. I was raised to do a good deed every day, and I do so, but I do bash people and bash generally anything that doesn't live up to what it could be; even myself. I know what I may be intruding or not get a response, but drift0r he was probably amending for his sins. I can kind of understand what you mean it's a duality, A man hard as nails has a heart of wax for his wife/girlfriend.
Quickly before I watch the video, this is my definition: A bad person is a person that does not care for anyone elses feelings or beliefs. Nobody but themselfes are right in their eyes.
After watching, this is my simple conclusion. He was not a bad person, but he had a straight forward horrible, mixed with old fasion, personality. He probably had some personality issues from when he was younger himself, but thats just my guess. I guarantee the racism has just been passed down. Great commentary drift0r, really great.
There are varying degrees of evil and good. Is the car thief as bad as a rapist no of course not, but to the person who's car was stolen an maybe that's all they had it seems heinous. Also some people do good things but for selfish reasons so who knows really
i also agree that is true, something maybe he wants the world to be a nicer place but it might not turn out the way he wants and maybe he blamed black people because he grew up in the depression so he was angry well lets not say that maybe jealous
Poseidon Here is a quote by a poet that lived a long time ago. ''All nature is but art unknown to thee; All chance, direction which thou canst not see; All discord, harmony not understood; All partial evil, universal good; And, spite of pride, in erring reason's spite, One truth is clear, "Whatever IS, is RIGHT."
Ilija Vuletić If Einstein said that, then he was incorrect. You cannot say that something doesn't exist and then claim that it performs an action. Saying "Evil is" contradicts the first half of the statement. Something that does not exist cannot "be." In reality, neither good nor evil can be observable without the other. We can only determine quality by comparison. You only know that the color "green" exists because of the existence of other colors. If every thing in the world was green, then you would not be aware that anything was green. Just the same, if only good existed, and not evil, then we would not be able to observe it. It would simply be "the way things are."
I have been through a similar experience except I never met my grand father I have never even saw his face. I am glad you spoke about this because most other COD players would just jibber jabber on but u speak the TRUTH so thanks also u just got yourself another subscriber.
Who cares if that old guy was sad she didnt like his chocolate. A box of damned candy doesn't negate decades of terrible soul crushing abuse it sounds like he inflicted on your grandmother. Only a despicable coward abuses women.
It was because of his upbringing, if one was brought up in 20's to 30's america, one would view such easily acquirable goods virtually as gold, as well as the fact that he managed all the family finances and helped them on such a large level. One would be lead to that assumption that he was a "despicable coward", if you only look at the surface story, but he still did good and honourable things. Sounds like he was a good person, just brought up in the wrong era and surroundings.
iHuzza Both of my grandfathers also grew up in the same years as this man did (tough lives etc) and they never treated their wives and kids like dogshit. My point stands, any man that beats up women and treats them so horribly IS a despicable coward. You don't do that. End of story.
Then your grandfathers may have been better people. Drift0r didn't mention if his grandpa had any mental disorder (which, in all honesty, isn't too likely), but in the end we, as Humans, are all different people, with different minds, different dispositions etc. The point is, this person, while it may sound like I'm justifying his actions(I'm not) wasn't the best of people but still allowed the good to shine through. He did things in balance, if you listened to the commentary. He wasn't just wife-beater (and he didn't beat them up, he just slapped her occasionally, which is still pretty bad but I digress) -end story- he had good and bad sides, two sides of the same coin.
old people have their own way of showing how they feel, my granddad also have a sight problem, he can no longer see now. he really hated people which was not from where he was from, probably because back when they were growing up that was the way to act. my granddad was really abusive to me and his wife, but i never blamed him for it, i know thats the way he shows his way of love. we are a lot alike Drift0r more then you know, i watch alot of your videos i can tell you are not a bad person. keep up the good work Drift0r :D
This guy should write a book. 10/10 would read.
Drift0r we dont care about the damn gameplay, ur stories are far too interesting

These old driftor commentaries are just pure gold. I love these and i wish he would do more. Thank you for all that you do
I'm going to save this on my favorites and listen to it when I'm driving because this ought to be good if it's 16 mins long :D
Man you are my friggin clone I swear!! I see you on almost EVERY video I watch! This was a great commentary btw, definitely worth a listen.
Wazup !
Drift0r, I really hope you make more videos like this. It really got ME thinking...
Always does. That's why I subbed
Maybe Grandpa was socially conditioned into racism but at the same time as a self sufficient man, perhaps he couldn't stand seeing another capable man fail due to lack of opportunity. People are complex.
This singular video changed the trajectory of my life for the next 10 years. Thx Drift0r

Driftor has so many videos from almost a decade ago that feel like they could come out today and be just as compelling
This commentary was brilliant. Similar to my family, but to a lesser degree.
Transatlanticism. :)
***** yeah it is man. title and reg. got me through some tough times. gotta rep it
I'm kinda tired of CoD but I keep on coming back for these commentaries. This one especially was really, really good. Keep up the good work driftor and keep coming with these amazing, eye-opening videos.

I agree too. This commentary really makes you think about not just your life but others as well.
if only i was here 3 hours ago i would have this top comment unless it was a little more than 3 hours ago that this was posted from when i posted this
mbd251 Guess that´s a timey-wimey thing.
September 2015 about a year later he is now 53k away from one million do you happen to remember how many he had when you commented? :D

taxes are good.... not for the rich but they are good for the poor and the government.
yeah, but it's still annoying to have to remember that the price you see isn't what you pay.
I watched this entire thing twice, and I still don't know what to think of your grandpa.
Benjamin Burgess Confused.
One of the best commentaries i ever heard! Amazing Drift0r!
You should search for the long 2 part one about his mom.
I have seen that vid too LOL
In my opinion an evil person is somebody who gets satisfaction from others pain; whether that be physical pain or emotional pain.
Occssionally if someone falls over in a silly way I may laugh, does this make me evil.
tim taylor Not in my opinion.
Well by your definition the other persons case would make him evil but you say he's not evil.. Oh and btw your definition if evil is a sadist
That would be a Sadistic person. If someone murdered someone because that person offended them, then they're still evil, but they didn't exactly like doing it did they? (Somewhat bad example)
Also called Sadistism
That was literally the greatest shit I have ever watched from you thanks for sharing with us, really open my eyes a lot.
dude... I love your videos man, you are a life changer

Drift0r is such a great story-teller. This was super depressing and deep.
I think with your grandfather it was more presenting an image that he didn't like black people because that was the society of the South he grew up with, but deep down he didn't actually believe much of what the South's society had taught him regarding blacks and whether they were human or not.

thats the best youtube video I've ever heared. I mean he said it so well. It's given me so much to think about!

I like it when you do this kind of commentary. Its just as cool as the "desire and free will" one you did.
there is no such thing as bad or good people. There is only good or bad actions.
I'm so quoting you
excelent!
Aaron S Pretty absolutely positive this is not an original saying.
well you better get a check up because you are looking completely negative :\

So what makes you a bad person ?
Appreciated the video and the fact you took your time to tell us a story from some dark days.
I love hearing long stores. (Grabs Popcorn)

Drift0r's commentaries are some of the most intriguing videos on youtube. Keep up the good work Drift.
No matter who you are, you do not know what kind of person you are until the very end.
Commentaries like this are just one of the reasons I sub to you and not Tmartn or those other CoD RUclips personalities. Great Vid.
I've never seen that killstreak... I'm completely out of the loop
Don't worry, you have an awesome GTA V Online character! xD Are you playng on the PS3?
That's what you got from this video...
Ya i dont even watch the gameplay, i like just listening to him, he is smart and has good things to say and teach.
mxechx lol
Um your profile pic is cod ghosts yeah.........
I dont even care about the gameplay i just sit back and listen to driftor. Its the the reason I stay subbed to Driftor. I can really relate to Driftor's story my father is very similar...
Feel sorry for your grandad with his chocolates
February 19 is my birthday! :)
Your grandpa Is the worst guy but also the best
drift0r amazing commentary. These types of commentaries that are so deep and make people take a step back and think about their lives and possibly others arround them are why I enjoy watching your videos, and as far as I can tell they're unique to you and your channel.
I love these videos
Thanks for shareing!
Thanks for spelling!!
Aaron S Yea my bad
I'd say that was the best video you have ever done Driftor. It was interesting and entertaining at the same time.
DAMNIT WOMEN!!!!!!!!! I laughed so much!
Your really strong to have a bad or not so bad grandpa your whole life and be able to say the positives about him.
There is no such thing as good or evil, Humans do what benefits them and those they care about at the expense of others.
Dude, your English is better than most people's English on youtube... sadly.
hahaha thanks!
There can't be light without darkness.
I didn't particularly like The Fault in Our Stars, but there was one line I thought was pretty damn good. To paraphrase: the existence of broccoli does nothing to help us enjoy chocolate.
***** I found it completely unrealistic and predictable.
Definition of drifter- taking all of life's most intense questions and giving the most amazing definition u will ever get...(and is good at cod
Drift can you make more comms likes this please
These videos really are a fun time. I love when you post these types of different, insightful videos because it lets us know a bit more about you
He probably said things like, "Oh, those black people with their stupidity and laziness.
Never talk about racism and end the sentence in kindness please
The reason why it is racist is because his opinion is a stereotype that many other people think and he generalized an entire raced based on only what he was told and through experience
^dude stfu seriously
roni emerson no u stfu +Drake spoke it right
I love these ethical type of commentaries, talking about values and stuff.
I believe good is defined by selflessness and never being an ass to someone, people like martin luther king. The best example of good is Superman, he's kind, selfless, and even though he could rule the world with his superiour everything, he puts his life on the line everyday to make the earth better
Bad is defined as small time bad deeds, like driftors grandfather or thiefs, they are simply a nuissance, they care about no one but themselves.
Wow! I totally agree and nice use of the comic characters
I don't think I've ever related to a person in my life more.
I don't even play cod, but you're commentary definately had my attention. As far as you're grandfather goes I can't pass judgment on him as I've never known him personally but from what you say he seemed to be a very conflicted man internally.
driftor, you had any epic dreams lately? those use to be awesome
You have no idea how much I needed that. Thank you for another amazing commentary, Drift0r.
Quickly before I watch the video, this is my definition:
A bad person is a person that does not care for anyone elses feelings or beliefs.
I really appreciate these commentaries, Driftor.
I can relate to some of the things you say.
Keep doing what you do.
I really look up to you.
Thanks.
Drift0r We love you Driftor, I will be subscribed until you are done with RUclips. (No homo)
I really like how all of your stories are insightful. I know a lot of people who tell stories that don't mean shit
Your grandfather just sounds like a dude who wants the world to be a better place but gets frustrated sometimes
I agree, he saw the faults, wanted to fix them, but got angry very easily.
i also agree that is true, something maybe he wants the world to be a nicer place but it might not turn out the way he wants and maybe he blamed black people because he grew up in the depression so he was angry well lets not say that maybe jealous
Loved the commentary. I think your grandfather has a symptom off two personalities.
lol he hated black people.....I'm black but I couldn't help but laugh 😂😂
I love when he does these kinds of commentarys
there is no bad or good only in our head, it relativ
There is good but no evil, because Einstein said ''There is no evil, evil is only a lack of good.''
please...
Ilija Vuletić What if you define evil as a lack of good? I mean, what is evil if not that?
Poseidon
Here is a quote by a poet that lived a long time ago.
''All nature is but art unknown to thee;
All chance, direction which thou canst not see;
All discord, harmony not understood;
All partial evil, universal good;
And, spite of pride, in erring reason's spite,
One truth is clear, "Whatever IS, is RIGHT."
Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing, Driftor.
SSHHIITT how old is he?
Drift0r
I think he's is in his mid - late twenties
Sounds like he was a good person, just brought up in the wrong era and surroundings.
iHuzza
Both of my grandfathers also grew up in the same years as this man did (tough lives etc) and they never treated their wives and kids like dogshit.
Every person is different you know. Driftor's grandfather may have grown up in way worse conditions than yours.
Not defending it but what you said about only cowards well Floyed Money Mayweather went to prison for abusing women.
old people have their own way of showing how they feel, my granddad also have a sight problem, he can no longer see now. he really hated people which was not from where he was from, probably because back when they were growing up that was the way to act. my granddad was really abusive to me and his wife, but i never blamed him for it, i know thats the way he shows his way of love. we are a lot alike Drift0r more then you know, i watch alot of your videos i can tell you are not a bad person. keep up the good work Drift0r :D
