South indians were the first people to discover iron. Tools of iron dating to 2400 bce oldest in the world were found in telangana. In the north we only had iron around 1800 bce. But Eurocentric indian history books will tell u there was no civilization in southern india and "aryans"brought iron into india in 1000 bce.

Very good introduction. I read about this 10 years ago. The problem with making Ukku is, it has to be made in ingots but cannot mass produced like modern steel making. Inventing Cuppola furnace changed the way the steel is produced. We have records how British systematically killed the fine weaving community of Bengal and South but nothing to show that they actually killed this art of steel making. In recent years Satyardhi killed this practice of children learning the family trade during child hood where the grasping power in extremely high. In the name of child labor he targetted parents who taught this skill to children. West has awarded him with Noble for killing India's skill.
Farmers use several sickles, axes, farmer swords for their daily use and they never rust. I used them for 20 years in my child hood without any rust. Ancient Blacksmiths developed further by giving high toughness to steel to make swords for Hindu kings. These swords can cut the rock. The barks as explained in video were added initially and cooked in air tight crucibles. The high carbon gives lot of toughness without brittleness. The blacksmiths, of Germany, Japan, US and other Europe countries made several efforts to reproduce this Ukku or Wootz steel but no luck. They are able to bring the wave pattern and the toughness but cannot reduce the brittleness. Though the grain size is fine, the grain boundaries were weak.
I believe, it was recorded somewhere by Sanskrit priests in southern India but one needs to find that right leaf to decode. it. The barks of the trees that are worshipped for Shiva, is a good start if one wants to try it. I have thoughts of spending some time with local blacksmiths after I retire. Great video.

Very noble resolve, sir (Of resolving to undertake this target after retirement).
In fact every literate Hindu should spend the remainder of his life after retirement in writing and researching on our ancient scriptures. Study of Sanskrit should be the starting point.
We should firm some online group to achieve that end. The number of our precious scriptures is huge and the knowledge contained therein is infinite.
We need a mammoth concerted effort to revive this knowledge.
Somebody needs to take the initiative. May be the one out of us who retires first.
Need to form a group, because the target is huge and it will need a huge dedicated army of volunteers.

Im proud that im grand child of blacksmith now im a mechanical engineer thought I learned everything but found not after when I casually when to his shop then I started learning from him a bit of knowledge about our ' kula vruthi - caste work ' from his 60yr experience . our caste only doing it because my great grand fathers dedicated to our caste since ages to our for fathers . he always tell about material thats with awesome strength that my great grand father father used to make now I know what that is tnx for info .now im proud that im an indian from south side and particular a blacksmith grandson . ill continue this legacy

One of the proof of indian metallurgy is Iron Pillar at mehrauli. It has not rusted. Other metallurgical evidences are beautiful alloy statues of God and Goddess. One of the statue was an amalgation of 5 alloys.
@A very Stretchy V Actually, the findings have already been published about it, maybe research it yourself?! Also, the iron pillar has been rusted but not as much as it should have (it was made in 500-400BC). Scientists are still trying to find the answer but no luck as of yet.

Though it native to South India it is most prominent in 3 tamil kingdoms especially Chera. That's why it's called Ceric Steel.

While watching your video I was wondering how familiar you were with modern steel manufacturing techniques. In particular, you may want to explore powder steel production techniques. Which does gain from the knowledge of the processes and techniques developed in India a very long time ago.
Also, I wanted to mention pencil leads are composed of clay and graphite and the hardness is increased by adding more clay to the composition.
In addition, while diamond is strong, it also shatters easily. The reason why the Indians of old were "mixing" carbides (in the form of plant material) with iron was to create a product which had the hardness of a diamond without also exhibiting the weakness of the diamond, which is its ability to shatter/fracture. In the steel industry, they refer to a steels ability to not fracture as "toughness". The more tough it is, the less likely it is to fracture.

Traditionally Blacksmith natively from Kerala I have always temptation for beating hot iron for making knife and sword in early teens but never allowed by family due to social status.
Now ended up in Urban job beating keyboard in Pune for making a living but still have a instinct and love for molten Iron..

Ukku is a Kannada word (Kannada has a different word "Kabbina" for iron). Ancient foundries have been found in the Kannada land of Sandur, related to Damascus steel. This was also published in the leading Kannada newspaper, Prajavani some 20 years back.

The Oldest inventers of this steel is Tamils.
Around 200 BC the Chera king was using this Steeels.

Great efforts for knowledge
We lost many things, but by far the best thing we lost is the scientific temper. I hope our education system changes to something worthwhile. Once the university of the world is now struggling to get patents and research articles in journals published.
This helps explain miracles of ancient masonry, that ancient metallurgy is misunderstood, means stone cutting may have been easier then than it is today. I still think Mehrgarh has more secrets to reveal.
It is "URUKKU" in Tamil, the root word is "uruhu", which means melted steel, and "ukku" means rotted. Tamils invented steel and they have traded it with the Egyptians in ancient times. The carbon they used is charcoal from coconut shell which is used by the iron and good smiths to this day.
"UKKU" is exactly the word for steel in Kannada. Don't know abt the Tamils invented it. But sure that South had this knowledge...

Hi. Great content as always. Since I found your channel today, I have been binge watching your videos. I happened to watch the video on Dhanurvedam first followed by some other videos and then this video, I had a peculiar thought. Since Dhanurvedam explains about the making of weapons in the first chapter and since it covers sword making in it as well, can't we find something regarding or at the least something close to Wootz. I see many of my brothers in the comments section interested in planning and trying to revive this lost art. Well this can be a good place to start. Since you are already in touch with the scriptures can you just check once. Just a suggestion.
One last thing, I have Telugu ancestry and since have grown up in the North, I fluently can speak read and write Hindi as well. It's a shame that I have been spending a lot of time lately learning French. Not that it is wrong just that I gave it more priority rather than learning Sanskrit or Tamil. Well after watching your videos, I have now decided to learn both Sanskrit and Tamil. All credits to you and your amazing content.

The secret is based on combining the carbon with iron during the eclipse. Same technique used for panchalogam. I wrote a book on India's Legendary Wootz Steel in 2004 and then out in print in Universities Press in 2013, which hasnt got a mention in this programme (which incidentally predated Shashi Tharoor writing about it mentioned below)..its a pity at one level that these kinds of popular online forums are now in a way invisibilising/eclipsing the actual scholarship of earlier and struggling scholars who published/publish in journals etc..

I am from punjab and wootz steel swords are used here so its not fair to say that its lost in time. The ways of forging swords and kataars are still carried on generation by generation

Kodava Tribes of Kodag (Coorg) used an arrow called "Ukk Amb" . Amb means arrow in Kodava language and Malayalam language. Today Kodag is a district of Southwest Karnataka , sharing border with Kerala .
We people of Karnataka used to make them. We had them till the British takeover.
Our Wadiyar dynasty had also lost its knowledge .

A friend of mine an autodidact taught himself and came up with a rather similar blade, extremely sharp, long lasting sharpness and it could be bend by more then 90′ degrees and it just jumped back straight... the secret?
