Jeeps are like toyotas with variable timing as they wear in the tick like a sewing machine. You can clean lifters or change em. I've seen many just keep driving them. Tick like a timex if you keep the oil good in em
Rod knock does not disappear, or get quieter, it gets loud the more you rev the engine up. Top end noises tend to disappear when you rev a engine up and or the engine warms up. Bottom end noises dont disappear .This is not rod knock. Its top end. Lifters. Most likely this engine has a bad case of engine sludge and the lifters are worn. The kid was right.
Cameron Graham same here..just changed plugs n wires..doesnt tick while idling..only when I accelerate..does that mean rod? I also have no dash warning lights..
I'm having the same issue with my car and the tapping sound comes and goes I was worried it was a rod barringso haven't driven it but if I start it and let it idle sound goes completely away
The comments crack me up... Piston Slap Rod Knock Collapsed Lifter Bent Push Rod Rocker out of adjustment Flex Plate Bolts Flex Plate Cracked I've looked at hundreds of videos like this and I've never come across any that can agree on what these noises are. Bottom line, ya got two choices: Live with it because the straight 6 doesn't care, or pull the motor and rebuild it. Personally I just think "It's a Jeep Thing". When you buy a truck for $500 you can't expect it to be perfect. Also, your cam lobes are worn.
Hey I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 l in it. It had the same exact noise in it. If you haven't already bought lifters and replace them yet, tear it down, take all the lifters out and don't forget 2 diagram exactly where they come out you need to put them back in the same hoes they came out.buy you a can of carburetor cleaner and take each lifter apart and spray them out real good with carb cleaner. Make sure all the holes for the inlet and outlet of the oil supply holes are clear and free of debris. Once you clean them one by one but them back together make sure you put the retainer springs back in the tops of the lifters. Let the lifters soak in oil for about an hour doesn't matter if they're up right, upside down ,or laying on the side in the oil. It will still sleep inside. Then put them back in the hose they came out of. reassemble your engine and that should fix your problem. like I said mine had the same noise I've done exactly what I just told you to do and mine doesn't have a noise one in it. After all lifters are pretty expensive. Lifters tend to collect build up in the bottoms of them which makes them not pump all the way up. Hope this was helpful. Also you will want to drive it a day or two before they pump completely backed up. But just letting it sit there and idle for a little while should do the trick. You can use this trick on any lifter in any engine. Like I said I've done it. And it really does work.
honestly, it sounds like a healthy 4.0l i have 204,000mi on my inline 6 my dad has 75,000 on his they sound identical, anyone who owns one needs to ignore their little ticks and clicks, if its running strong oil pressure is good and its not overheating then its operating as intended
Might anyone be able to help? My 95 jeep does a ticking noise minutes after warm up. Goes away under load or throttle, but its not there when the car is cold. Only warmed up.
I've got an 01 that does the same. I'm 95% certain it's a lifter. The sound is louder in the side of the engine that doesn't have the exhaust or injectors so I've rules those out.
My experience with lifter tick on my 4.0 is usually a light tic tic tic.....if this is a lifter it has to be one of thd deepest knocking lifters ive heard....maybe its totally collapsed and its really slapping the cam lobe....idk Im leaning more toward bad rocker arm or bent push rod...
I had a simple oil chang and coolant flush service done to my 2015 jeep. No noise prior to drop off. I pick my jeep up and now it has a loud ticking noise in idling and driving. What did the mechanic do?
the mechanic didn't won't to mess with it ,he took the pan off tighten rocker arms down ,they have worked loose , making it worse ,doing that can bend your push rods , it can cause one to push one down into the engine , or threw the oil pan , it all have to be replaced ,you can be buy the kit . i have worked on them for years and he took short cut that could have cost you an engine . Jeeps are bad the for ticking noise ,and it the lifters and they no other fix but replace ,that removing the head ,exhaust it some work but i hope he didn't damage your engine. you can remove the pan and here the lifters tapping
My 98 wrangler has made this sound for 30,000 miles. Checked flex plate , never any metal in oil, oil pressure is good. Tried every oil additive under the sun and no change but recently tried sea foam. As per directions you can add 1 oz. per quart of oil. So added 6 oz. and noise was gone for a day then came right back. I give up. Ripping the 4.0 out and replacing with chevy small block 400.
A lifter tick will go away when you speed up. A rod with get louder as you accelerate. A lot of guys think they have a rod or lifters going out but it's actually a timing slap meaning the chain is slamming the cover. When the Jeeps use a 3/4 socket wrench and turn the engine by had, if it's the timing chain you'll hear it slapping the timing chain cover

I agree Fran. Don't put your two cents in unless you know what you're talking about. Gumbo is the only one in thread who mentioned timing chain. That was and is the problem for all with that noise. The timing cover has an attached guide which also acts as a tensioner. Change your timing chains.

That's not rod knock. Rod knock is loud and continuous. That doesn't even sound like lifter tick. I've had that on my jeeps several times. His just sounds like a diesel, and as I recall that usually has something to do with the flexplate starting to crack. I forget the reason why it sounds like that, but the rear main seal leaking can be a cause.
