Looking back it's clear that if we just stayed with the 2021 regs we'd have RedBull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren AT LEAST all competing at the front of the grid. The racing in 2021 was good up and down the grid, we had great convergence developing at the front and none of the ridiculous problems with the ground effect and 2026 rule sets
The only problems with ground effect really came about because Mercedes threw a tantrum and forced the ride heights up 10mm. That made the dirty air worse, making the whole redesign completely irrelevant.
The field spread was pretty huge in 2021. Much bigger than it was now - even after 5 years of those regs we were nowhere near convergence. funniest thing is that by the time McLaren and Ferrari finally do have consistently competitive cars it'll be a season too late, I too thought that 2021 showed that multiple teams had figured out and perfected how to race & develop their cars in the high downforce super dirty air, granted the ground effect regs have brought teams closer to front running pace a whole lot quicker than the old regulations ever did. so it's not all doom and gloom, imo it is a very poorly timed change though, 2025 is gonna be everyone's last bite at the cherry and based on how the RB20 looks right now, the RB21 is going to be a big problem for anyone elses title dreams in 2025. the old regulations went on for too long but that last season with them was insane up and down the grid.
It's not 50/50. It is a maximum of 50/50, but most of the time, it's only the ICE that's running because the electric boost will run out very quickly. The electric motors will be activated for the first 2-3 seconds of the straight and then allow the 550hp Ice engine carry the speed. Wait, haven't we've seen that before in the 2015 LMPh1 cars?
The battery will run out quickly if you deploy 100% of the power all the time, this wont happen. Maximum deployment at different speeds is regulated and teams will develop their own deployment strategies as well. The average power across a race lap will be considerably below the 1000hp peak power but its not a black and white thing where you either have full power or only ICE power.
Max Verstappen already expressed his concerns about the regulations 9 months ago. They were talking about the engine, that it had to be 60% conventional PU and 40% electric. Because with 50/50 they would have to lift on the straights or something to recharge the battery. No-one really listened because they would just say it was only to try and get an advantage again with Red Bull. And yes that could be partially true, but personally I don't like the 50/50 split because I don't feel like F1 should be 50% of Formula E...
My friend is working at Mercedes and told me this at least 10 months ago. Theyve wildly fucked up the de-rate by removing elements of the PU. The addition of Active Aero is a knee-jerk reaction to the insane amount of drag these cars have been found to produce. The rear wing is set to act like a parachute, so coupled with a huge battery depletion at the end of straights, the cars are effectively rubber banding backwards as if they're being artificially slowed
This directly effects the power unit which will impact the speed. The 2026 V-6 will have 33% less power under the new rules, reducing output to about 560hp (it's around 1000hp now I think). You're relying on a battery for more of your pace than before, which on fast circuits will deplete quicker. So instead of fuel management, it becomes battery management.
@@pr3cious193 yeah, i mean it is already a ton of battery management, but with the new regs, it will be crazy. But that means a ton of development will go into the regen system and thus be good for road cars potentially.

If they did this, it would still be an engineering sport, but with closer racing with the only thing that can change from car to car is the aero efficiency which wec also has a cap on. I dont mind the idea that F1 slows down and corners like 130R actually get treated like corners again. That feels like something that will make for more overtaking opportunities in varying locations. However if the active aero systems that should be making the cars faster are messing up the whole system that the drivers only use 60% of the cars potential... thats just stupid. As for the 50/50 energy source split, I still hate the direction of electric cars in fundamental principle. The environmental value of the course of the battery lifecycle has minimal benefits over fossil fuels and the raw materials are just as scarce as usable carbon. I would much rather F1 stick with the goals of using synthetic fuels where the energy source itself is near infinite if you use carbin recapture, and if the grid is green the net carbin is near zero, plus the process can be used to make polymer materials making the footprint net negative.
The birds are called Hadedas. They are very loud, very annoying and will wake you up in the morning. When you live here, you get use to them but for visiters, they can be overwhelming. If you are unfamiliar just search Hadeda sound and you'll see why 😂
Anyone could have seen this inevitability just from reading the regulations. Just quickly, they're: > Keeping the same engine but introducing more spec parts > Reducing the energy (power) of the fuel so the engines can only make around 500hp and that's an optimistic estimate. > Made the engines more expensive and harder to develop (because same engine + more spec parts + less energy from fuel so its much harder to find power and performance) > Reducing the fuel capacity to 80L > Increasing battery size (and thus weight) > Doing nothing else to significantly shave off weight and their current weight target is the weight of the 2021 F1 cars, which were still too heavy > Reducing downforce, > Mandating a 50/50 power split between ICE and electric and then keeping current arbitrary limits on electric power regen, storage and deployment. And because the electric power can only be used at certain times and they've made it so the hybrid system has to put out more energy to meet the 50/50 target than it can recuperate and store, that means F1 cars are going to have 50% of their power missing except for specific moments. Worse still: because the cars can't regen enough energy quick enough, they have to go on fuel burning laps to generate energy, but they can't do that because their fuel tank has been reduced by 20%. It's utter foolishness.
Yup exactly this but fans were eating up things like turbo lag. Turbo lag was being promoted by the official f1 channel!!! You never want that ish in a car it’s a stupid ruleset and anyone who read the rules properly knew the potential issues that were gonna occur how can you weight loss when batteries have worst energy availability than Fuel and you’re relying more on them??? This is before the issue of even charging up the batteries
yeah they should make the cars smaller, un cap the charge rate and regen rate, and these cars should be sub 1500 lbs easily instead of the min being almost 1800 lbs. This can be easily done with a more PU heavy setup and using more capacitors instead of batteries for a lighter setup that still allows for a quick power boost like a push to pass instead of relying on the electric to make up a ton of power. They should just open up the PU regs and just put a power cap on the total car. With the fuel limit, this will force manufactures to be creative in their choices for efficiency, power, and weight. With the cost cap and a better min weight limit, this could create a competitive racing field with the engineering side that all fans love. It would also allow for the grid to sound unique like wec
A problem with the hybrid side of the new power unit is it is going from 160hp max to 470hp max while the deployment regs are staying at 4 megajoules per lap. This means teams will have to either run in a mode that produces less power than the previous v8 cars or run out of deployment halfway through each lap.
The cost cap has worked, the cars haven’t. The new cars are ugly big and slower yet produce just as much dirty air. Bring back the 2018/19/20 regs but just make the cars smaller and put in a hybrid v8 of some sort

The emissions happen around the car, not in them. Plus lithium farming is brutal for planet and body. The waste lakes created by the plants are mini fallout events. I'd be way more interested in a hydrogen engine angle if they really want to be innovative.
Max literally said the changes would make the cars undriveable, and everyone called him a liar.
That was more in regards to the PU changes, that you would prioritise harvesting energy over just flat out driving.
I really enjoyed the format for this video. Just walkin around and chatting, felt like I was hanging out with a buddy. Thank you, Sir.
The bird is the infamous Hadida😂annoying af
Sooooo true , it’s my eternal enemy 😂
Yup the amount of times I woke up to one is uncountable. Didn't know they were in Cape town as well, I thought they were kinda just in Gauteng
I like the vlog style video
Happy to hear, it probably won't be the last whilst I'm out here!
@@TommoOnRUclips The bit with the bird was hilarious lol - love this style, really chill
Liked the outdoors chat about F1. A few stop/sitting down shots here and there. Nice 👍🏻
One of my favorite Tommo videos in recent memory, the scenery changeup and random bits like the bird part made it more fun!
3:42 It looks like a Hadada ibis (Bostrychia hagedash), the incredibly loud bird that wakes you up at 3 AM.
if Tommo ever does a travel vlog it needs to be to classic gran turismo music 👌✨
Outside talks with tommo would be a neat monthly edition
Great format Tommo, the normal setup is great but this kind of thing from time to time is a welcome interlude. Kudos to keeping up with the channel on holiday, in whatever form.
Tommo this was a pretty cool and fresh presentation style. It would be nice to see some of these more vlogy type videos sprinkled in with your normal videos.
Being a South African randomly seeing Tommo in Cape Town is absolutely wild 😂
I don't think I had seen the ever so classic "Blog Style" from Tommo, great work as ever!
Very informative video and I never expected you to come down to Cape Town, South Africa! Welcome Tommo!!
Simulation data is great and all, but has anyone asked Adrian Newey what he thinks about this?
Newey: I REALLY want to get on a boat now
The birds are called Hadedas. They are very loud, very annoying and will wake you up in the morning. When you live here, you get use to them but for visiters, they can be overwhelming. If you are unfamiliar just search Hadeda sound and you'll see why 😂
Great video tommo! Loved the music intro with the ocean! Vibes 🏁🔥
Appreciated you made a video on holiday. Thanks man x
Hey Tommo, that's a Hadeda, they are super loud!!
Should 100% do this style video back home 👌
Welcome to Cape Town Tommo I hope you enjoy our city! 🇿🇦
Awesome video!
great format 👌🏼pauses felt really nice. keep it up!
The bird is a Hadada ibis
Anyone could have seen this inevitability just from reading the regulations. Just quickly, they're:
> Keeping the same engine but introducing more spec parts
> Reducing the energy (power) of the fuel so the engines can only make around 500hp and that's an optimistic estimate.
> Made the engines more expensive and harder to develop (because same engine + more spec parts + less energy from fuel so its much harder to find power and performance)
> Reducing the fuel capacity to 80L
> Increasing battery size (and thus weight)
> Doing nothing else to significantly shave off weight and their current weight target is the weight of the 2021 F1 cars, which were still too heavy
> Reducing downforce,
> Mandating a 50/50 power split between ICE and electric and then keeping current arbitrary limits on electric power regen, storage and deployment.
9:37 I love the new style, it’s really cool. It’s like a chill talk where it’s just you talking. Keep doing it it’s so good!!!
Bird is a Hadida Ibis. they have an iconic screech.
The same iconic screech will have when the 2026 era begins with a boring domination with a total lack of overtakes after a really close 2025 campaign
The cost cap has worked, the cars haven’t. The new cars are ugly big and slower yet produce just as much dirty air. Bring back the 2018/19/20 regs but just make the cars smaller and put in a hybrid v8 of some sort

Love the new video format. Keeps it dynamic!!!
How on earth you managed to produce such a high quality video on location is crazy! Great work!
im not suprised cuz of the added weight. they might have to slow down f2 and f3 by giving them hybrids.
Bro came to Cape Town at the wrong time. The weather here is crap these days. Although since he's from the UK, this is probably a nice day for him. Love your videos Tommo.
Hahaha! Minus the storm - it's still better than England!
Wow, I really liked this new video with you outside this time 😂. Very nice!
Good to see you shoot from outside for a change, and we also get to see a new place. Combining travel vlog with your regular f1 content.
2:25 Was that a gran turismo 4 soundtrack? I got flashbacks of childhood memories 😁
Tommo frequently uses menu music from the GT games. As a long time GT player (since GT1 in '98) it is one of the choices that endears me to his content the most. Such lovely nostalgia vibes.
@@ShonnDaylee Also the little beep when he shows a picture is from the old GTA games I believe.
I find it funny that when Red Bull gave a similar warning last year everybody dismissed it as scaremongering or Red Bull is behind with their engine. If they at least did the simulations to verify Red Bull's warning then we wouldn't be a year behind with this problem.
This video format! Walking around a cool place… love it mate 👌
great editing mister Tommo :) a joy to watch
F1 are the only organisation that can get me more stressed about their choices than my uni exams lol. As things stands just say f-it and only have the regulations about the engines and slight modification to the current aero regulations. I sincerely hope this is the product of some dodgy data from the journalists and not the actual current state of F1.
Meh, I don’t mind saving 100 dollars a year and switching to Indycar if this actually happens.
The bird is probably some kind of Ibis. Though I don’t know African birds very well tbf
Hadada ibis

Cheers for still making videos during your holiday Tommo!
also the word instead of offsetted is just offset :)
Yeah my bad, brain rot. 😅
@@TommoOnRUclips happens to the best of us, these race times have done damage to my sleep schedule.
Who really gives a shit about speed as long as the racing is good?
It's supposed to be the pinnacle of motersport, it should be one of the fastest categories if not the fastest
true!! using that logic, i think we should all stop watching F1 and go and watch Karting instead!!!
@@Pobsworth What the fuck does it matter if cars can go 380 kph if the racing sucks? I think top fuel dragsters would be more to your liking, buddy.
@@extremegrieferbible theres obviously a middle ground. F1 is supposed to be 'the pinnacle of motorsport', you think people are gonna believe that to be true if the cars are slower than those racing in the WEC or other series around the world?
Obviously the racing matters, your argument makes no sense for current F1 tho, the racing for the past 2 seasons has been completely shit, regardless of their speed.
@@Pobsworth fr, the years before the new regulations were better imo
Loving this format, would love to see more of your life also, outside of your studio. Big fan. Always happy to see you post sir.
Very kind of you! 🙌
I need more Tommo videos out in the wild. Such a vibe
Great video Tommo! Love the creative holiday format
The videography and editing in this video was awesome you should go for a similar aesthetic more often

I agree. I'd like to see the cars smaller.... before these changes they are already on the knife edge. Make them simpler not more complex.
