Man, my band covered this song for a Halloween party once, and I did no research into how it was actually played. For that cover I essentially wrote my own part because I assumed it would be so simple there'd be no point in looking at it. Man how wrong I was Still sounded fine when I played it, it was probably the safer bet to play the way I did for how short notice it was, but I really underestimated the depth of the original song Kudos to you, cause this definitely is gonna take some work to learn properly
I was wondering about that. I found some info on it but I didn't know how factual it was. I figured, even if it was King, I'd still dedicate it to Leon, considering he was their main bass player. Thanks for the info though. Nice to know. Really interesting on some of these classics it's very hard to find who's actually playing on all of them. And thanks for watching.
@The Picking Pythagorean I have the first album on vinyl and there’s a description that says Leon wrote the bass lines but Ed played most of them. So even if they weren’t played by Leon, you’re right to dedicate the cover to him
@@patrickkunkle5958 Leon in fact did not write all of the bass lines that Ed King ended up playing on the album. Leon's versions differed greatly from Ed's, particularly on Simple Man. The original version composed and played by Leon is somewhat more basic and less active, and can be heard on both "Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album" as well as the 1976 live album "One More From the Road". The only time that Simple Man's bassline was ever played this way in the band was by Ed King on the first studio album, as when Leon re-entered the band on bass, he played the song the way he had originally written it. Ed did not have time to learn all the bass parts from Leon before the band entered the studio to lay down the tracks for the first LP, so many of the basslines, while loosely based on Leon's parts, were written and played entirely by Ed. Personally, I much prefer Ed King's version of Simple Man's bassline, and I think his use of fifths and octaves works much better rhythmically in conjunction with Bob Burns's drumming than Leon's does. But if you have the chance to listen to the original written by Leon, I'd love to know your thoughts.
Oh man this looks really complicated, it's a lot different from the basslines I'm used to. I'm going to attempt to learn it, I always wanted to play this beauty of a tune. Thanks for the wonderful transcription!
Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I personally fell in love with this bass line after I transcribed it and played it a couple of times. Really brilliant bass line.
It's fantastic, and it is shocking how many people don't even hear it. I play and was told to learn this song, I did and when we rehearsed, the rest of the group was confused. It is the perfect example of a lead guitar player playing bass. It's kind of disconnected and jerky, but it works amazingly
I dont even know which strings are which im on 5 string omg this is so strwssful none of these tutorials are clear on which strings to hit and whatnot omfg kms
Well, if you are on a 5 string, then you just use the bottom four strings and avoid the top one. If you just pretend the low B string isn't there, then you're looking at a 4 string bass. The line closest to the bottom of the screen is the low E.
I would say, take it very slow at first. It's quite a crazy bass line. So, use the 1/2 speed setting on youtube, and try to just get the intro down. Once you have that, move on to the verse and on and on through the song. Then speed it up a little and try it again. Keep this up until it is at full speed. That's the way I learned it after transcribing it. And thanks for the awesome comment!!!
Yeah, unfortunately youtube does that automatically. From now on I put the tabs on the top so this doesn't happen, but this was an old video so it's on the bottom. If you watch it on a tv it might be a little better. It's usually just a matter of the controls for the video that appear whenever it's paused.
Well, first of all, thank you for the compliment. And that's a good question. I'll have to say I don't know. I ran it straight into the DAW, and added a little compression, and I think an amp emulator. This one was a while back when I didn't have as much equipment. And then that Fender Bass just has a nice sound. It's a MIM, but the pickups still sound top notch on it. I did practice this for quite a few days, so maybe it's about getting really comfy with it.
Yep, that's what's on the tape. It really is still a G chord. Since a G chord has a D as it's fifth, if you put that in the bass it becomes an inversion, so G with a D in the bass. Usually written like this: G/D Thanks for the wonderful comment, and I'm so glad you're enjoying it. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask... : )
@@joey4ever1982 That must be the way Skynyrd wanted it, cause that's what's on the tape. But, if you're playing it live, and you think the G sounds better, I would just swap it out. I believe actually that Ed King rather than Leon played this bass line and it's possible that he just liked the way that discord sounded.
Yes, this is the original. I separated it by using software so I could hear the bass by itself. And when you slow it down, that is what he is playing. I have found that most tabs on the web, especially for bass are just plain wrong compared to the original.
Tuned down a half step. So it's Eb standard. Eb, Ab, Db, Gb They were tuned down when they recorded it originally. So I tuned down all the instruments to make it more authentic.
@@ThePickingPythagorean I'm using Yamaha Studio Monitors. Not sure, it may be something on my end. I can hear the bass, its just that it seems to "not stand out" in front of the mix, you know, like you'd want to emphasize the bass line to be out front, which I think is what you'd want for a bass lesson.
One of the best bass lines ever written!!

It was originally recorded by Ed King on their first album (recorded during Leon Wilkeson's temporary departure).
