So I was just watching away and suddenly I recognize the old Bedford wrecker reg BSV 562 that's about 5 minutes in. I know that truck and it's former owner as used to work next door. It was owned by Gerald Finch Recover in Challow station Oxfordshire. I was a friend of Gerald when I was young and pleased to know the old man as he did me a few good turns as an apprentice mechanic starting out in life. I remember when he got that old Bedford and know a few stories about it. He was an old REME guy and loved old trucks and had a working fleet many of which were classics like two Diamond Tee's and old ERF's. It's a bit sad to see it there as I remember it looking all newly painted in red. I know he must be long gone now so R.I.P. Gerry and although looking rough glad to see it still existed and hope it still does now along with some of his other trucks too.
Leyland, Bedford, Foden, Scammell... this is a graveyard of the days when Great Britain manufactured wonderful vehicles. It was a golden age for British motoring, but it was all to come crashing down so soon.

While working on the construction of The Victoria Line tube the company bought several Coles lattice jib cranes for shaft work. They unloaded deliveries of tunnel lining segments and lowered them down the shafts to feed the tunnel boring machines. The Coles lorry mounted crane was the first of the telescopic type, while working for Greenham Crane Hire, Tottenham I drove a 15tonner. Man it was bliss not having to unfold the jib plus add sections to extend it. My father told me, don't be sad that old vehicles are scrapped and recycled. If all old ones were kept the value in them would be nothing as there would be so many, plus new ones would not be bought.

I once rummaged through this place in the summer of 1975. There was quite a lot ex-military odds and sods all crated up. A junk freak could spend his annual holiday there.
I trained as a traditional Coachpainter/ vehicle signwriter from 1979.....just like the the old ERF Chris Metcalfe door sign...i was made redundant because of stick on vinyls...a simple and cheaper way of covering a vehicle. Interesting vid ...and yet Mother nature will always take control in the scrapyard.
First vehicle I ever drove in anger back in the day was a Scammell Highwayman eight legger tipper, big redline and the David Brown box in it, by christ they could sort out the men from the boys in short order, these modern day steering wheel minders with powered everything and auto boxes couldnt last one day on the job we used to do day in day out......sometimes if you were lucky you could even get a motor with the luxury of a heater that actually worked harder than all the holes in the floor too.
I know exactly what that place smells like! My mates and me used to climb the wall of a place like that in the late '70's/early '80's and play in the lorries and cars when the place was shut for the weekend. It was near Manchester. The place is a housing estate now. We were warned not to play in places like that when we were kids but you didn't come to any harm as long as you weren't an idiot. We were fine. I'm so glad I was a kid when I was!
I would love to go their Ive loved dustcarts since I was little and I would like to see other waste related trucks like skip lorries and road sweepers .
Some real golden oldies on show. I'm in to Bedford lorrys, I had several tk trucks in the past but you rarely see them now so it was great to see them along wit the later tl type the s and j types are a lot older. Great video, they need saving!!!!!
I saw at least one MK too. We had an old TK we used on the farm in the late 70s early 80’s and we used to go to Rush Green whenever it needed some parts. They had so much stuff there, and that was forty years ago, we always found what we needed.
Great video, a pity you didn’t pay attention to the buses that briefly could be seen in the video. Maybe two of the rarest vehicles were that Commer fire engine and the Leyland Martian, originally fitted with that straight 8 petrol engine solely for army use. The Commer most certainly had the straight 6 petrol engine. Later models often had the 3 cilinder 2 stroke diesel, the TS3. They screamed! Anyways, quite sad to see the demise of the British motor industries, all of the vehicles in this yard represent the glory of what once was and never comes back. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland. That first Army MJ I picked that up in Scotland 🏴 it had been sitting for 15yrs in a farm after about a hour & 2 cups of tea I got it running and drove it 3miles to load it up
The split screen you couldnt recognise at 4: 11 was a Guy big D or a big J, the rarest one I could spot was what was left of an old W.D Bedford quad gun tractor barely recognisable under a pile of scrap.....absolutely criminal.
I was there 33 yrs ago getting rear springs for a GUY big J tractor unit, the yard wasn’t fenced off and was 3 times the size. The bloke knew where everything was, it looks to have been cleared and industrial yards/units put up to the left now. I wonder if the steam sentinel is in the shed along with hundreds of gearboxes??
the long line of Leyland Concrete Mixers used to belong to C&G Concrete all of these lorries were on the road working up to 2011 I think . C&G was taken over by Breeden around that time and some of them have Breeden`s name on them
I,m surprised that the older stuff was still even there when this vid was made with the price of scrap increasing.Some of those trucks date back to the 1950s.Is the yard still there now?
Jesus that is one hell of a yard, some stuff in there of good value as is but take away the full trucks and just go to the scrap side of it there must be a million or two quid lying about in there , good vid i will watch part 2 later,
Great video with a lot of British and European classic trucks, pity your audio commentary was virtually inaudible. Most of the older trucks are well beyond restoration. Coles and Rapier cranes, a real blast from the past. How far from the sea is this yard? Excessive rust on the older trucks. Thank you for sharing this classic walk around, enjoyed it.
Hi Dave it's about 50 miles as the crow flies to the nearest coast. If you put rush green motors in to Google earth it will come up, and give you an idea of scale.
Looks like most of the really old stuff is gone, hopefully sold to enthusiasts. What is their plan here? Most of the classic trucks have been left to rot or been crushed through being stacked in piles, they’re really only good for parts. If you walked in and asked for a certain gearbox or axle would they know what they have? I’m glad they haven’t just crushed everything but it’s a pity more care wasn’t taken to preserve a few of the better and rarer ones.

The important but incredibly sad fact is that at one point it became cheaper to source vehicles and parts from abroad, British engineering ended up too costly to compete with imported vehicles and components. I do think that we could become a engineering superpower again but only if we all pull together and fight to rebuild our engineering and manufacturing industries.
Trucks are still built at the Leyland plant (under the Daf badge) and Dennis Eagle still manufacture bin lorries at Warwick. A shadow of it's former self and under foreign ownership but at least it's something.

@@classicmotorsgreatbritain1086 hi, yes they are for what is not new parts. l got a rusty old air filter which was worth about 5 pounds and was charged over 40 pounds.i have since restored it but to do this cost me 30 pounds in materials etc,so no wonder everthing is rotting away. its a pity really
Silly really like you said what’s the point ? Lots could be saved from here, guys with experience and a love for some old machinery could breath life back into some of the better stuff I bet.

They don’t want to sell you parts of a vehicle. They want to sell you the complete vehicle and plenty of complete vehicles have been bought for preservation.
I suppose it is up to the owner how they run the yard but it seems like a complete waste to me. Some of that must have been laying about 30 to 40 years.
Firstly, get a better camera then learn how to use it. Swinging it around wildly just makes viewers feel sick. After that, add some meaningful commentary instead of telling everyone it’s unbelievable when very clearly the truck is very real and very believable.

The Place is a Time Wharp I was last round this Yard about 10-12 years ago and it doesnt seem to have changed much thank you for this.

Brought back memories seeing the scammell routeman at 33.37 with the 6.80 engine worked on many of them in the 1970s.

The Cargo tipper is a stretch ex M and S i worked on a sister tractor unit, Prouts on the old Kent road sold a few of these

These trucks have been sat here for years. They are gradually been broken up now but some people have phoned and save a couple

Germany and France still make trucks Sweden Holland even Italy with fiat so y can't us brits we were the best at engineering at one time.
