I love the duality of, "These weapons are trash, you shouldn't use 'em, and if you do, you should feel bad." and, "At the end of the day use whatever you want, anything works, and take everything I say with a handful of salt"

I finally did it. I found the smartest person there is regarding Bauldurs Gate. I had vague memories as a child playing this with my grandfather teaching me how, but I have greater memories of Diablo 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic so I couldn't actually remember what game that was all that time ago. Upon Bauldurs Gate 3 coming out, I felt my brain tingle a bit and looked up Bauldurs Gate 1. Wow, I have spent the last month playing this and now finally I have found the man that knows everything about the game. I have needed a guide like this for so long because a vast majority of those old forums cannot be viewed anymore and all I can seem to ever find information on is the newly released Bauldurs Gate 3. I thank you so much for your services.

I've been playing this game for almost 10 years and only after your guides I finally understand how weapon speed works, how attack per round calculated with off hand, how +1 extra attack from special equipment works... Christ I feel like an idiot now :)
    Thank you for these guides.

    • @yami122
      @yami122 3 месяца назад

@@powned100100 Weapons speed the lower the number the better Zero being the best which means you're going to hit as soon as your character is in range and swings their blade but a higher number say 5 would mean that there is some lag to how long it will take before your character actually attacks
If you're holding two weapons You have a primary weapon which will be in your right hand And a offhand weapon which will be in your left
if a weapon says it increases your number of attacks per round it will always affect the weapon in your right hand even if the weapon giving the bonus is in the left hand so it is beneficial to put the items giving that bonus in the left hand while you use the right hand for actually dealing damage
And in general plus to the number of attacks well first off I need to point out that although the game seems to be playing out in real time it's actually turn based and what you're seeing is kind of an illusion in fact I believe a lot of the times you're swinging your weapon you're not actually attacking
You can only attack a certain number of times within a certain time limit I forget what the time limit is but I think the number of times you can attack within that is capped at 5 or 10 if you're using improved haste
so it's generally good to be having attribute that increase your number of attacks in fact increasing your tax speed can be more useful than just increasing your raw attack damage as it's better to do six points of damage twice then it would be to do 10 points of damage once you've got it
there are a few things that will add half an attack around you need two of these before it does anything if you have just 1/2 attack per round you're not actually going to get more attacks

17:57 "This will work on Kangaxx" Before someone says something, yes, Kangaxx in his Demi-Lich form is immune to +3 weapons. Azuredge will do no damage to him, but still force a save and kill him in that form (in addition to killing him like it does to any and all liches).
47:41 "Darkfire Bow is Watcher's Keep" uhhh close but not really at all. Darkfire Bow is held by Captain Erelon in Amkethran, where he and his mercs are summoning and shooting monsters to death. Talk to him too many times and he gets pissed and tries to kill you, and he drops the bow upon death. Watcher's Keep would make this available in SoA and that'd be _really_ good but you only get this bow halfway through Throne of Bhaal.
49:55 I feel the need to add to this little section on Heartseeker. When Dav says that Darkfire Bow is amazing purely for its Improved Haste ability but Heartseeker sucks when it purely exists for its +7 to-hit Aim ability, there's a caveat he forgot to add: Heartseeker's +7 to hit ability, in addition to only lasting 9 seconds, only applies to _ranged_ weapons. Nothing else. If you activate its Aim ability you can swap to a better bow for 9 seconds of decent THAC0, but that 18 Strength requirement kills it for a lot of classes. At best this item can be used by Thieves who could really use the THAC0 bonus and are equipped with a strength-boosting item to get them to that necessary Strength score. 9 Seconds of a Thief attacking with a +7 bonus to-hit for 9 seconds on ranged weapons is pretty decent, definitely useful if you need them to hit something since their THAC0 blows, but if you try to use Aim and swap to melee weapons on any character you can confirm in the inventory screen that you are not, at all, getting any THAC0 bonuses on melee weapons. That said, Tuigan Bow's 3 base APR combines well with this if you swap a strength belt onto a thief to activate Aim.
54:23 There is another, second copy of Tansheron's Bow that's used by Cattie Brie, a member of Drizzt's party. It differs in its icon and artwork being identical to the Shortbow +1, and because it's one of Drizzt's party's items if you possess it in an inventory or bag of holding after dealing with Bodhi, Malchor Harpell will show up and attempt to confiscate all of Drizzt's party's items. If you attempt to bamboozle him by dropping items he'll reappear three times and on the third he will attempt to Imprison your whole party. You can bypass that by using things like Spell Trap, Spell Immunity:Abjuration, Spell Turning, Berserker Enrage, etc., but he will teleport onto every map from that point on and attempt to talk to you but has no dialogue, so he will break every script ever and break your game.
_However_ Malchor doesn't appear at all in Throne of Bhaal, and won't appear until after you clear Bodhi's Lair a second time and only appears if you carry any of the unique equipment from Drizzt's party. So if you take all that unique equipment to Watcher's Keep and dump all of it into a chest you can keep Twinkle, Icingdeath, the second Tansheron's Bow, and all the uniquely named junk and pick it up after you first leave Saradush. Tansheron's Bow x2 and Shortbow of Gesen is really only useful in a triple-thief party but it's there if you want to do that.
59:04 Special note, Arrows of Biting are magical. All non-basic ammunition is counted as magical, and they have differing enchantment levels. Creatures like ghosts that are immune to normal weapons will still be hit by Arrows of Biting, but since the Arrow of Biting is enchanted with an enchantment level of 0 anything specifically immune to +1 is immune to them.
59:50 Arrow of Detonation can miss. THAC0 doesn't matter when you use the AoD because it gives you +65,535 to your attack roll. I'm serious, a level 1 thief with 9 DEX using a shortbow he isn't proficient in will still hit any enemy in the game with this. But since there's a d20 attack roll there is still that 5% chance you roll a 1 and your Arrow of Detonation just happens to be a dud. Of special note is that because the fireball from the Arrow of Detonation is from a weapon it applies any and all on-hit effects. A Wizard Slayer can apply their Miscast Magic to every enemy hit by the explosion, Assassins and Blackguards can somehow apply poison to every enemy hit by the explosive arrow.
1:04:00 How do you miss with a -15 bonus to attack on an Ogre Mage? There's only one in all of BG1 but I use that thing to kill Kahrk on every playthrough and I have yet to miss once.
1:14:40 The Army Scythe also appears in BG1 in the Thunderhammer Smithy. That's definitely another point for Crossbows since you can buy one in BG1 that has the same APR as all bows.
1:17:00 This cannot be obtained at all except as random drop loot in the base unmodded game, and even then across four entire playthroughs of BG1 I have only gotten two of those bolts and only once one single time across 2 playthroughs of BG2, each on a different playthrough. _However_ of special note is that the final boss of Siege of Dragonspear is an enemy with immunity to +2 weapons and lower, and he has 80% Magic Resistance that is upped to 100% on any difficulty above Core. There's a number of ways to lower his MR but since Doom and Greater Malison stack, you can combine those with Enchant Weapon to possibly use one of these bolts to drop his HP to 4. Then shoot him one more time and he's dead.
1:39:13 I'd argue Daggers are the best proficiency for Fighter/Druids, especially Fighter->Druid main characters. Their only other 1-handed options are Scimitars/Wakizashis/Ninjatos and Clubs, and those two weapon classes suck. I've been playing a Kensai with the intent to dual to Druid and I can tell you there is no let-down to Daggers. A 1d4 dagger does 2.5 less average damage than a 2d4 bastard sword, that is pitiful and not worth throwing the entire class of weapon out for. Firetooth being a 2d4 +1 APR main-hand weapon is nuts.
2:55:53 The description on the page blatantly says it only generates ammo that counts as +1, it might do the _damage_ of +2 bullets but it won't hit Vampires. Also of note in the original BG1 (with or without Tales of the Sword Coast) and BG2 slings didn't add Strength bonuses to damage, but the Sling of Seeking was the only one that did. Since the Enhanced Editions changed all slings to use Strength damage this weapon got reworked to be an infinite +1 ammo weapon.
3:05:20 The Rod of Terror used to have a little exploit that got patched out in the Enhanced Editions: if you were equipped with the Ring of Human Influence which set your Charisma to 18 and attacked with the Rod of Terror until you hit a base Charisma of -1 it would instead roll over and make your Charisma score the max of 25. Now in the EE if you go down to zero you stay there and if you ever take off the Ring of Human Influence while you have 0 base Charisma you die.
3:06:09 Oddly enough the Serpent Shaft is the only way a Cleric can deal poison damage.
3:14:29 Just a clarification, the Staff of Thunder and Lightning is obtained at two points; one after defeating Faldorn during the Animal Trouble in Trademeet quest (which everyone can do) and the other on the main floor of Spellhold. You do _not_ have to be a Druid to get this.
3:46:47 Albruin is not +3, right there in the name it's +1. It adds 3 damage, yes, but the coded enchantment level often does not match the damage that the normal pen-and-paper D&D would have. If you attempt to hit Belhifet at the end of Siege of Dragonspear with Albruin you will not hurt him.
3:48:51 Foebane was broken during the 2.5 patch where they messed up Larloch's Minor Drain. LLMD would add 4 current and temporary hitpoints but would not stack upon itself and when the temporary HP from LLMD was active you could not heal from additional LLMDs, so Foebane could only heal you for 4 HP once per turn. That's fixed as of 2.6. The fix for it was to take a copy of the weapon's files from Icewind Dale and dump them into an override folder in your BG2 directory, same with Flail of Ages (which had a bug where any enemy immune to specifically the poison head was immune to the entire weapon, also fixed in the unmodded EE game as of patch 2.6).
Also, you missed three weapons. You missed Embarl's Dagger, the legendary unenchanted dagger that uses the mighty d6 damage die, you missed the Fist, equipped by default on every character that exists, and you missed the Monk's Fist, the most powerful godslaying universe-rending weapon of devastation so powerful that it is locked behind the late-game powerhouse.
EDIT: Whoa, I actually just noticed after thinking things through, you missed a crucial weapon: You never mentioned The Burning Earth, the +1 fiery longsword that gets bonuses against different creatures including +4 against undead. It's the most expensive weapon you can import from BG1 to BG2 and it can be used to kill Demi-Liches since it counts as +4. That seems like a bit of an oversight.

Keldorn’s two handed sword actually has a pretty fun use, which I assume you already know Dav. You can walk up to any wizard with full defenses up, which usually include some fire shield, and since it damages you they WILL take the magic damage and for most of the game they don’t have protection from magical energy. This means they will get interrupted pretty often, that on top of taking the 5 magic with every swing. This being said, Keldorn will take damage as well, so it’s a way to hinder wizards in many fights but to be used with care. Love the videos man, keep it up!

Use Greater Deathblow with Blackrazor. As you’ve drained that dragon to level 12, the GD will proc, and instakill the dragon. No chance of losing the loot, either, due to level drain.
This also works with Black Blade of Disaster, though that disintegration is worrisome. 😋

@@kiemugen9830 Is Greater Deathblow sealed in LoB, or are the levels too high on the targets? If the latter, (level too high) that's why this post talks about Blackrazor. Blackrazor drains levels. 😈 if I recall, many dragons in TOB are around level 20? With Improved Haste, you should be able to get 8-10 attacks per round. If 4 hits proc, (level 12) on the next hit, Greater Deathblow will instantly take it down, without losing any loot, due to level drain. 😈😈😈😛. Vorpal weapons have conditional triggers. The Axe of the Unyielding has a 10% proc, but a Save vs Death at a -4 penalty (?). So using Improved Haste with a speed weapon (Kundane) in the off hand, and casting Greater Malison would be optimal. 🥷

It's a pseudo +5 because it only applies when wielded by a thief, and as i recall, always applies the +2 to the main hand.

Great video, thanks. After like 20 something years of playing BG1 and 2 I still found some new info here. :-) By the way, I think you missed the Gnasher, a not too bad club: 1d6+2 (crushing), slivers add 2 points (piercing) damage each round for 4 rounds.

3:24:58 I keep the Drizzt items at the end. The sh1ti mage spawns and I turn into Slayer form, and after that I just use freedom on my party. The same wizard spawns in every map I enter, but he completly bugs out, he has no dialogues, so the triggers has bugged. Its sad for the items are not great, maybe this scimitar, and my party keeps starting to attack the wizard every time he spawns.
In ToB I keep the items and the wizard didnt shows up. A trick.

The shortbow, "Eagle Bow: "Protector of the Dryads"", at least in original BG1 and 2, has an ability that is not in its description, it adds the user's strength damage bonus to its hits. Give ogre gauntlets to Coran or other main archer and they do lots of damage all the time. Or give them a giant strength potion and gauntlets of weapon expertise, for the big fights, and you're looking at hitting up into the 20s every shot.
I think a lot of people didn't notice the ability because in BG1 you'd normally just give a shortbow to a thief with unexceptional strength.
Also just to spite the ranged nerf in BG2, I did one run with a bow-heavy group with a heavy reliance on acid arrows since acid affected most things.

At 1:23:00, you can use all the Big Metal Rod ammo in Firetooth and you don't need to wear the armor. Not sure if you just meant you had to complete the Big Metal Unit quest line, which is all that's required.

    Fun fact about 2e ad&d
Initiative was so much better than it is today.
You rolled a 1d10 and added either the speed factor for the weapon or Spellcasting speed of the spell to that number. The lower numbers went first in the order. If there was multiple attacks in a round then everyone attacked in their order then if someone had an additional attack they would act in their order again, and repeat until all attacks are resolved then the round expires. 1/2 attacks were dealt with as being able to use an additional full attack every other round (2 1/2 attacks would be done like 2 attacks, 3 attacks, 2 attacks 3 attacks, etc)
That's another one of the big reasons why magic missile was so renowned... it was one of the few spells with a super low speed factor (1) and couldn't miss (making it an anti-mage spell as it should still be used to this day. Mages would have their spells interrupted and lost if they took damage before their spell went off)
I think people would live 2e if they actually attempted to play it. The amount of great mechanics, detail, and balancing is amazing

3:04:49 Rod of Terror was used to make your Charisma 24 in the original BG2 game. While wearing Ring of Human influence (which sets your CH 18) you could reduce your charisma to -1, which is impossible, thus the game computes CH as 24. After that you can get rid of Ring of Human influence, and Rod of Terror and play with your overpowered character(assuming you reduced your CH to minimum and distributed the points to other stats). Both the ring and rod can be obtained from Athkatla, ring from the circus tent and rod from the city gates.

3:53:13 instead Ruining Sorceres and wizard with giving them infinite spells to fight lich-es here is what i do THE EXODIA OF BG
-wizards are the game, so weapon that works on them is best: "Konata"/Chevalier +Holy Avenger+ THE Champion spell Lv5 (sac a priest) + haste + Draw power After THE champion spell. (you steel need to spell strike and nothing lass, and rubi , and breach the caster, because its a crappy system where this Avenger sword SHOULD disenchant weapon immunity but it dos not) Still as weapon to fight wizards its the best. For anything else 2 hand with haste or whirlwind works.
    - Because of this Avenger is the best weapon of the game :D granted the 25 str hammer "Faeyr" would be 1st if it would not be possible to get 25 str so many other ways (for fighters its the best hammer). 3th is "Ages"for slow , 4th Katana Fury because its +3 , 4th is unyielding ace of decapitation,
(everyone has their own fighting stile :D)
in that note Chevalier is the best Fighter class of the game. (i hate fear so much)

Bala Axe Wizard slayer is a normal axe that applies Miss Cast on hit. That sounds like a very good weapon against wizards that cast Protection against Magical Weapons because Bala Axe will still hit and apply Miss Cast on them

problem is the only wizards who use pfmw are liches who are immune to it anyway and low level wizards who get destroyed in 2 sec by anything anyways. Most wizards (humanoids that would normally be hittable) use greater mantle which was buffed with scs to block more weapons.

I kind of disagree with rating Tuigan's as C-tier, simply because that puts it on the same tier as Protector of the Dryads etc. and I think it's quite a bit better than that tier of weapon. It's not amazing by any stretch, but when you factor in how you can get it 5 seconds after leaving the starting dungeon, and extra APR it gives to characters like Imoen and Nalia, I personally have a hard time calling it anything other than a B-tier weapon.
Love the video my dude, thank you so much for making it and contributing consistently excellent content for the Baldur's Gate community.

I need to sit down & give these games a fair shake. Got BG1 20 years ago or whatever, puttered around a few hours & forgot about it. Although I was crazy about the old "gold box" games when I was a kid, there just wasn't much time for games with a wife & kids in the house. Downloaded the updated version from GOG recently & have done the same, not much more than traveling south from the inn with the couple you meet there. In my defense, I'm revisiting Morrowind for the first time in 20 years & that takes some time.
Got in a mood & bought several games I either haven't played or only fiddled with briefly, so BG1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, Vamp the Masquerade: Bloodlines, the 3rd Witcher, Wasteland2, KCD, & Fallout New Vegas. People rave about these games. Time to see what the fuss is about.
Considering the mage who ambushes you at the Friendly Arms took me several tries, it'll be a while if not forever before I try handicapping myself with more difficulty & mods.

Great guide. I play core no-reload and agree with pretty much everything said. Only major difference for me on core rules is that Defender of Easthaven, while good, isn't as important.
I really hate how APR off-hands warp the entire hierarchy of weapons around them. APR weapons should grant the extra attack to themselves even when held in the off-hand. I wouldn't feel as guilty using top-tier two-handers if that was the case.
