John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

It seems an odd thing when my heart hurts for a total stranger but it makes complete sense. We are all, in one way or another, the same people in the same struggle. I made it out after ten years on heroine. My good friend relapsed and died last month after five years sober. This video came to me in a time I needed. I don’t usually cry but I needed to. I’ve lost so many friends and this music video opened up the flood gates. I love the song and prine for caring.

I couldn't sleep. Been up since 3:30 AM listening to Prine all along for an hour and half (and more). I never knew I was capable of so many tears.
What a beautiful song and video. As a grandpa raising a grandchild due to his father's overdose, it immediately struck a chord. I was surprised to hear Elaine mention the loss of mother and daughter, as I assumed it was the father that was lost, the father being absent in the video. To re-watch knowing the mother scenes were flashback and she was a single mom makes it all the more heartbreaking. Thanks John, you've been making me cry for almost 50 years now.

I think John Prine was put on earth to make people aware of a lot of things. Now look at the poor guy fighting for his life with the latest thing to be serious about covid19. You two did an extraordinary job directing this video, if this doesn't bring a tear than Old Yeller didn't affect you. The little girl did an unbelievable job of looking totally devastated over the loss of her mom and your Dad looks so much like the picture of a hard working man with great wisdom. This horrible addiction has taken friends of ours sons and daughters so it hits home. Loved the entire thing God Bless you all.
Typo! Can't get that line wrong! "There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes". The man sees things so clearly and states them so simply that we can't miss the point or help being moved -- sometimes to tears and other times to laughter.
Damien Einstein of WHFS first played John Prine's music in the DC area. The first song I heard was "Spanish Pipedream". When I heard, "'... I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve" I was hooked forever. He has the ability to help us see things that have always been there more clearly, as if for the first time. No subject is off limits to John Prine and it's about time he was in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
Don't forget the heartbreaking line from his first album; "There's a hole in Daddy's are where all the money goes". John Prine has been tuned into this problem from the very start of his career.

After watching the Summer's End video, and thinking the people and scenery looked amazingly familiar. I had to click on this video to learn the back story. And was pleasantly surprised to discover the video was filmed right here in my home state by resident film makers. My grandfather was from Nicholas Co. but raised his family in another county farther south-west. John Prine's songs often have unexpected lyrics, sometimes funny, other times haunting, and moving. Being a fan of his music for four decades I was sorry to learn of his recent passing away. The scenes in the video enhanced the emotions and theme of the music very well.
R.I.P. to a phenomenal story teller and musician.

Children can be so much more observant and insightful into their own emotions and pain then given credit for. I could legitimately cry on command by thinking of what I once envisioned was the most emotionally agonizing thing I could imagine: losing my Grandpa, the love of my life, my best friend & hero all my childhood. We had a bond so reminiscent of the one between the child & grandfather in this video; a once-in-eternity moment of such a tremendous blessing that most never have the opportunity to experience. He passed when I was 4 weeks shy of turning 19, and 4 weeks after 9/11. I didn't want to, but I kept going with life, have tried my best to be strong bc he was strong. He was a soldier.

I didn't want to cry this morning! John is an inspiration to song writers of all ages! Could a song deliver more emotion than this one? The directors captured so much through faces! I looked for this video to see where this girl had acted.. what shows or movies...? Wow, she was a little girl from the Sunday school class! So real and so raw!

Hit way too close...and the little girl looked so much like my friend Ashton's (also from wv) youngest daughter...I just couldn't hold it back. Rest in Peace Ashton...I hope you know how much you are missed....

Moved by the music & lyrics and each time I watch the video it wraps around my heart and brings me into the grief and hope of families touched by this crisis. Well done John Prine. Well done filmmakers.
John Prine is the only true down to earth legend who is revered and respected by so many music industry giants and legions of fans of all ages that would have the cahoonas and the horse sense to have documentary film makers shoot his video. You guys did an amazing job.
Never knew the story behind this song but what you folks are doing is wonderful, he was a good man and you are beautiful people for putting this out to the world.
How did I miss this for so long, brilliant video and this is a great , simple short description . I keep saying that nobody, not one artist I have ever known, in the sixth decade of their career, have dropped such a masterpiece on us, all the songs on that album are pure gold and then to cap it off with a gold seal classic, " I remember everything" , no words for it.
Gotta admit I did not know what this song was actually about, I was so happy in the melody, but now it makes even more sense.
What does not make sense to me is why the great America has fallen into such a state of drug addiction, OTC , prescription and illegal , will we ever know what causes the sense of hopelessness that exists across the spectrum.
One thing for sure though JP held these issues close to his heart and wrote of them with heartbreaking accuracy . RIP John Prine , I hope you meeting up with the Irish Cowboy big Phil sometimes . Much Love to all.

Living in WV in Raleigh County it's very heartbreaking to see this is a true story. So many young kids that I've known since they were little die from opioid addiction. John Prine you are one of the greatest song writer ever. I've been a fan of yours since 1977 and this is one of your best albums, well they all are amazing. Proud to say I've seen you twice here in WV and you were amazing.
Thank you for doing this. It touches me in ways I cannot express without becoming a sopping mess. He does have a beautiful grandfather face. I never knew my grandfathers but my Uncle Ben and Uncle Vern filled the gap. Blessings

That little girl getting her heart broken is EVERYTHING. I imagine it had to be brutal to be on the set at that moment. But I also bet everyone knew they were involved in making something special.
Just "discovered" this masterpiece and I'm profoundly touched by this music and film. I'm from Brazil, didn't know John Prine since this days (tks to Spotify)... but this connected with my soul. Love his style. This sound/film particularly touched my soul because I have a little girl (4 y.o.) and out myself in this family place... the pain, the tragedy that can be caused by a mother's/father's loss. I lost my mother myself when I was older, but can't even imagine my daughter facing something like this. That's gave me more and more power to keep moving forward despite life fights. Thank all involved on this project.
For those who are suffering from addiction (of any kind), remember that your life counts. You life is important to somebody, even if sometimes it doesn't feel like. NEVER F**** GIVE UP. Life is too precious to be left behind. If you are struggling, talk to other people. Find some help. But DON'T YOU DARE TO GIVE UP. Love u!

I KNEW I recognized this area! My dad was born in Mt Lookout; my Papaw had a store and ran the post office for a while in Gilboa (way back in the 30's) . . . spent many summer day with my papaw out next to the garden shucking corn or stringing beans. When I saw this my heart went "home".

Fantastic work. I have been a huge Prine fan since my teenage years in the late 80s when he was a legend but mainly among the people in the music industry and still hadn't achieved what many consider mainstream success. Pouring myself into his entire body of work helped me become a better musician and knowing all those great songs from the 70s up to that time in my life in the late 80s early 90s was like being in on a cool secret or something and being just astounded at how many people weren't familiar with his work. I was born and raised in Appalachia in West Virginia although I'm about 20 minutes north of the Mason Dixon line. I ventured out on my own at 19, ended up living in Phoenix and Utah and a few other places traveling for my job at the time but I eventually missed what had always been right there in front of me but back in my youth was when the industry that had always been such a main part of almost every families life in one way or another, the steel mills, coal mines and the power plants along the Ohio were closing or becoming automated and the state was in serious decline. I came back home after 5 years away and oddly enough I met my wife who I had seen years before back in High School, she was a year older, we had many mutual friends but had never met. She was working 2 jobs and bartending a couple nights a week and that immediately got my attention because my family worked our butts off and we owned and operated our own bar business since I was a kid of 9 or 10 and it takes a certain kind of person who can take charge of a rough WV crowd that's had a few too many, not to mention she was a total knockout and I didn't think I had a snowballs chance so I was totally relaxed, myself and charming and funny rather than a nervous wreck trying to be somebody else. We talked several times and she eventually said to my buddy "what's with your friend, he hasn't asked me out, I don't think he likes me" truth was I didn't think in a million years she would have given me the time of day, I thought she was just doing the old foxy bartending flirty batting the eyes because guys tipped better when they did that. We dated for a few years, one day we stopped by the bar she worked at when i first met her, it was there that night that I felt like it was the right time to show her the ring that I had purchased about a month before but was waiting for the perfect time and began to get impatient, it was hardly the perfect time or place but it was fitting seeing as that was where it all changed for me. We were married in 99 had my son in 2000 and a daughter in 03. We are as happy today as ever and our children are amazing, hard working and independent. The opioid crisis was hard to watch especially because many of my old haunts and buddies who were still running in those places were directly effected some mortally and if I hadn't decided all those years ago that I had my fill of the party life and this girl was the person that I felt for the first time that making her happy for as long as I possibly can was all that mattered to me so that's what I tried to do. If not for her I might have ended up like so many of my old friends. We have had a wonderful life and now it's just the two of us again. The kids still come around and we hang out and are tight but the nest is empty now.
I get completely chocked up every single time.
Once you get stuck on opioids it's pretty hard to come back "home".🎼❣️

Great work. Well done. Reminds me of the Ron Sexsmith video for "Secret Heart" or the content of "Strawberry Blonde" . I lost a brother to an opioid related illness, and many clients to drugs, so this is evocative for me. But I think the song and video move beyond this to a consideration of the universal warmth of home - a humourous definition of which is "where they have to take you in ! " Hope to see John live in Edinburgh next month.
