I think what makes Taemin stand out, and why he's successful as a soloist, is the persona he's created. Most idols and artists don't necessarily have a persona. Sure, some idols are monsters at dancing, and others are monsters at singing or rapping. However, Taemin as a soloist is a persona as a whole in all that he does. He exudes it in his voice, dance, performance, body and facial expressions. He doesn't look like he's performing a song. It always looks like he's living and breathing the music and lyrics, which is so amazing to me. He's not just singing, he's not just dancing. Taemin is Taemin-ing. By the way, this is different from being an ace. An ace can do it all, and does it well. However, not all aces exude a persona. I think the producers and directors all understand how Taemin works and one of the things they love about him. Honestly, they must have so much fun producing and directing for/with Taemin. I feel like he challenges them, and because of this, they challenge him in return. Or vice versa. Another thing about Taemin is that he's just bizarre in such a good way. He's unconventional, always evolving, grand and dramatic yet gentle and subtle, dark and heavy yet bright and light. Honestly, I have to remind myself that he learned how to dance just by watching videos (yes, mostly MJ), and advocated for himself because no one believed he could sing. I genuinely believe he made himself, not SM. I believe that they provided the resources, but Taemin is Taemin because he worked so hard to advocate for himself and worked himself to the bone to get to where he is. Taemin is just proving that he doesn't need a big company to keep being Taemin. And THAT is so difficult to do.
I TOTALLY AGREE. I've been saying this- its a level of showmanship and performance that really completely immerses the audience. There's a few other idols that have great characters they play on stage (G-dragon, Taeyong, Hongjoong) but Taemin is so refined in his performance it's almost like a demon takes over him. Its just so captivating, beautiful and even at times terrifying. Truly an ARTIST.

The way that he immerses and becomes his persona for the stage/MVs is ridiculously cool. Partnered with his androgynous dance moves and looks, and his ability to excel in songs men (at least in Kpop) aren't typically used to doing (or encouraged), he is just an interesting and entertaining performer that knows how to captivate people with all these unconventional and non-stereotypical qualities.
This is so absolutely spot on. It is interesting because during the promotional trailers for this album there were so many "Taemins" but at the end of the day all of those Taemins are just him. With other idols their ability to jump from concept to concept and inhabit a character is always praised but with Taemin, all of those versions of Taemin, the one in Criminal, IDEA, Guilty, MOVE etc. they have always been all him and they're all one. And no matter what he does or what agency he is in, he will always do it in a way that you'll end the performance saying "that's the most Taemin thing I've ever watched" He makes things his own and not the other way around.

Oh PD it is so exciting to hear someone get Taemin so clearly. So much of the criticism I've heard re: the music video production has made me want to tell people to kick rocks because how can you not see the video looks EXACTLY how they wanted it to look. I am, personally, a big fan of the storytelling in Taemin music videos, but this is a song about sex in the air, and if you want to put a dramatic storyline into it well you may as well film an adult film if that's what you're looking for, but that's not the Taemin way, this is. Like you say, he is creating sexual tension with the viewer throughout the entire thing until it literally explodes. My favorite thing is all the vocal layering with straight up moaning and, I guess, as PG "dirty talking" as you can get on a song (The whispered "ah yeah?" after the big AH YEAHS! ?? Nasty 🔥) Like alright we get it! And I love it!! No "guilt" anymore, he was here to f*ck with us (figuratively) and we love to see it!!! Great analysis as always 🔥
It may be a different style for him, but it's still 100% him. It still fits in with the rest of his discography. Everything he does, he adds his own unique flair to so it's unmistakably him. Even the production, while a different style, still has the same sound/vibe as his other songs. Just like how SHINee as a whole can do many different styles and still clearly be them, Taemin alone can as well.

For me in the first part, when the song starts, I feel that we enter a brain wave system, not a computer system, and that makes me think that we are entering his mind, that's why when he goes down the elevator, I feel that He tells us, do you want to go deeper? He said he left SM because he wanted to get out of his comfortable life as an artist. He moved to bpm instead of a big company because bpm could give him space and time to create his own career. In SM he has written many songs but most of them were rejected and he even had to work on the songs that the company gave him. So now he shows us and proves to us that his choice to leave smtown as a solo artist was not wrong by being the composer in all the songs of this new album and from just dreaming of having his world tour concert, now he is doing his world tour concert.
the mv feels like a personal invitation into his world. taemin's every move is soo deliberate and dripping with sensuality. the visuals are of course stunning, but it’s taemin’s presence that makes the whole thing feel so intimate, like he’s performing just for you.

Each time he manages to explore new styles and concepts, while staying in the core almighty legend Taemin we know ❤ I listened his album on repeat as soon as it was released, and believe me when I say you are not ready for what he unleashed 😅, out of all albums he released "Eternal" is another level, each song reflects sides of Taemin he never showed before, masterpiece of an album! And yes, he says "Sex is in the air" but due to censorship he changed the title and english lyrics, very Taemin style loophole!

I'm asexual, but I have a strong appreciation for eroticism in art and literature. Taemin is one of the best at this in my opinion. The way he portrays desire and attraction and all the complex emotions and dynamics involved is brilliant.
It's always an interesting experience to hear what you have to say. especially when it comes to taemin. I find this video very basic. a throwback to 2012/2013. it seems to me like they spent all the budget on trailers and marketing and made this video with what was left. instead you make me totally reevaluate it. anyway, the song is crazy and the album is beautiful.

I feel mixed about this song/video, but am liking it more and more. I love the janet jackson vibes SO much and am adjusting to this new sound. The video reminds me of "All Night" by Janet Jackson or Britney's "Me Against the Music." My only issue is that this MV is not sexy enough for this underground nightclub concept. I get that Kpop idols walk a very delicate line and don't commonly express sexuality the same as artists from other countries. However, the weird spacing between all the dancers at 1:36 and 1:46 and throughout the video just doesn't feel natural given the concept. Like you're at this underground club but everyone is dancing 4 feet apart from each other? I'm not sold on this high sex concept? On the other hand, love the song, love the choreo, and Taemin's so talented as always.

I find this video very basic. a throwback to 2012/2013. it seems to me like they spent all the budget on trailers and marketing and made this video with what was left. instead you make me totally reevaluate it. anyway, the song is crazy and the album is beautiful.

I feel mixed about this song/video, but am liking it more and more. I love the janet jackson vibes SO much and am adjusting to this new sound. The video reminds me of "All Night" by Janet Jackson or Britney's "Me Against the Music." My only issue is that this MV is not sexy enough for this underground nightclub concept. I get that Kpop idols walk a very delicate line and don't commonly express sexuality the same as artists from other countries. However, the weird spacing between all the dancers at 1:36 and 1:46 and throughout the video just doesn't feel natural given the concept. Like you're at this underground club but everyone is dancing 4 feet apart from each other? I'm not sold on this high sex concept?
On the other hand, love the song, love the choreo, and Taemin's so talented as always.
