    In this review we are going to systematically and scientifically test the ins and outs of the Galaxy Watch 6. The focus will be on the health and sports tracking capabilities of this new release from Samsung, based on more than two weeks of testing, which did result in a few surprises. We will test the heart rate tracking accuracy, sleep stage tracking performance, GPS tracking consistency and low oxygen saturation detection. As always, I do not want to waste your time, so there are timestamps in the description below, so you can easily navigate to those things that matter to you. Let’s get started.
    Hello everyone! For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. This will be my first in-depth review of the Galaxy Watch 6, and compared to my initial review a few weeks ago, there were a few surprises now that I have about 4 times more data to work with. As always, I am not going to bother listing the detailed specs of this watch, since you can find those on Samsung's website. The most important things to know are: the screen is a bit bigger, the processor is a bit newer, it now uses Bluetooth 5.3 instead of Bluetooth 5.2 and the RAM has increased slightly, otherwise the Watch 6 is largely similar to the Watch 5. So instead of going through the specs, we are going to be purely focussing on independent testing of the performance of this watch, since Samsung did promise improved health tracking. As always, let’s start off by looking at the heart rate tracking performance of the Galaxy Watch 6 classic, which I tested during a total of 9 indoor cycling workouts, 18 outdoor cycling workouts and 8 weight lifting sessions.
    Alright, but what's the final verdict? Well, it's not that different from my impression of the Galaxy Watch 6 classic I reviewed a week ago. In terms of health and sports monitoring, the Galaxy Watch 6 seems to be an average performer overall. It manages to track my heart rate well enough under easy conditions, but not when the circumstances become a bit tougher. The oxygen saturation measurements were pretty good actually, and with GPS tracking was good enough, as long as you don’t care about any of the details. On the other hand, the sleep stage monitoring wasn’t impressive, very often recording way too much awake time and limited deep sleep.

    Many manufactures just list health tracking features but don't actually work properly. Your efforts are really important in helping those of us that really want and use accurate data to help us improve our health. Thanks for your efforts, it is much appreciated and very helpful for many of us to find the right device that really works as advertised.

      I'm pretty sure I could manually write a sleep tracking algorithm roughly as accurate as the Huawei just by making educated guesses based on your heart rate patterns correlated to your wrist movement.
      You need these companies to be accountable for them to produce accurate products. There's no real incentive to do so because most consumers aren't aware or don't care.
      The big contenders like Fitbit, Oura, Whoop, Apple etc. are obviously employing some kind of machine learning algorithm at the very least.

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist I'm confused by a difference between videos, the graph at 7:11 in this video "Heart Rate test: indoor cycling" shows the Galaxy5PRO at about 0.92 mark.
      I just came from watching the Galaxy5PRO review where around 7:19 (ruclips.net/video/47cHdMo54ks/видео.html) the test is called "Heart Rate test Spinning" where it lands between 0.98 and 0.99. Isn't it the same test? why it got a lower value in this video? appreciate if you can clarify.

    Dude, you are saving my life right now. As a fellow fan of data, having access to coefficients of correlation for these watches is huge to me. I'm curious about your sample size in case things like manufacturing lot, wrist fit, etc also affect the performance of these while acknowledging that I personally wouldn't spend $1000+ to buy 3 of the same watch to test these things (nor would n=3 give much statistical power against the factors I mentioned).
    TLDR: You are who I want to be when I grow up.

    Here are the main differences between Bluetooth 5.3 vs 5.2:
    - Bluetooth 5.3 will offer faster switching between low-duty and high-duty cycles and is therefore more energy efficient than 5.2
    - Removing redundant data will also reduce energy consumption.
    - Bluetooth 5.3 should also reduce interference, and boost signal quality.

      @nuspeed19 I agree no reason to get the Watch 6 when you already have a GW4. A question remains, if Samsung doesn't drastically improve their accuracy, will consumers choose a different platform when it's time to get their next smartwatch? Based on the evidence in Rob's testing here, I believe that what really matters to Samsung is to capture market share, aiming for the large majority of "middle of the road " users in terms of health, offering "good enough" and a few unique features, and other than that, milk the segment without any aim to be a leader in terms of accuracy. The aim may be profitable growth as Samsung's overall profitability has plummeted. There's probably a push not to invest, but rather on tweaking profit upwards. If they grow as planned, and are able to still turn a nice profit, they potentially read the market right. In addition there are other features that make a whole package, and it is this overall feature envelope that they're betting on matters to consumers. It's been said that Samsung switched to the Wear platform because they wanted to be able to offer Kakao Talk social platform in their home market. So the health part of the equation may matter less to consumers and these other features, as part of the total package combined create the growth.

      Love my GW 4 44mm.
      Just went to check my past cycling activities on samsung health. They seem pretty good in most cases with the exception of when I'm going really near 4+ floor buildings (which is somewhat to be expected, I guess).
      Again... I don't care so much for it's fitness accuracy as much as I do for everything else (notifications, weather, time, etc...).
      For under 200€ is everything I expected and some more.

    There is any problem using fitness trackers/smartwatches/smartbands on the inner side of your wrist (palm side)? I mean, how bad is it (if bad at all) to the accuracy of the device?

    I think that the inaccuracy of the heart sensor could be related with band size reduction. I have a Galaxy Watch 3 -45 mm with a sport band 22 mm and when I compare it with my Iwatch 7 it’s stays close to it. A 20 mm band on a 47 mm watch could move a lot depending on the sport activity.

    Thanks Rob, I would expect the blood pressure test in the full scientific review as well. This is an important health metric as many people around the world suffer from high blood pressure. It is easy to test it on Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 against a reference device, like a traditional upper arm blood pressure monitor or like Aktiia band, a certified blood pressure band. You seem to have dropped step counting, you can just as well drop GPS accuracy test since you are not giving a quantified score which shows how well the GPS performs. PS : I also test my blood oxygen level with O2 Ring from Wellue in flights and never had results such as 68%. Thumb is recommended for that device. PS 2 : Samsung Watch 6 review 3 in a row was a bit boring. What do you plan to review next ?

    Hey Rob, thank you for your wonderful videos they help me decide which watch to buy. All that aside though I came across an interesting situation. I have a polar h10 chest strap heart rate monitor. Per your recommendation and I love it. It works great. I was using it at the gym the other day, and I noticed that it seemed to be connecting to my new Galaxy 6 watch. There's only two ways that this would be possible, and I'd like to try to figure out how this is happening. Unfortunately calling tech support for Samsung products is like pulling teeth. Not good! So I was hoping maybe that you could help me understand what's going on here. It seems like my heart rate monitor is connecting to my watch even though I haven't paired it with Bluetooth. The only way I can figure this is happening is either the Bluetooth settings stored in my phone have been downloaded to my watch and the watch is using that to connect to my heart rate monitor automatically, or and I think more likely the watch is connecting through ANT+. The only problem with the second theory is that I can't find a single spec sheet that mentions ANT+ for the Samsung Galaxy 6 watch. And I tried calling tech support and they had no idea what I was talking about. I had to explain what a heart rate monitor was! Lol.
    All that to say, what's your theory on this particular situation?

      Hello:
      That sounds interesting. To confirm it is indeed reading from H10, unbuckle the watch and set aside and see if it is still reading from H10. If it is, there could be 2 reasons. The Samsung health app on the phone can pair to H10 and if you open the watch app it should show the reading from the phone live. The 2nd option is Samsung Health has gone thru a major upgrade just in the last couple of days. Check latest sakitech video on this.

    I am seeing these comments and i wonder ,did we watch the same video? What I am getting from this is that a watch which costs 300$ is not the best one compared to more expensive watches like apple watch which are a couple hundred bucks more. It does a decent job at everything and although it is not the best out there i dont think that if you want accuracy in sports you would go for that watch. I think its a very good "lifetyle" wearable which can help you track some things that might be irregular and makes you go see a doctor or something. For me for android its one of the best choices for regular users.

      You're right. Who's bought a Samsung or Wear OS is more interested in watchface s, download apps, reply notifications, etc. The health accuracy during exercices is the last thing to think about it. Who's take sports seriously, bought a chest strap, a fitness watch like Garmin.

    • @SQUID0NKEY
      @SQUID0NKEY 3 месяца назад +2

      Absolutely. Compared to other watches, this watch is still good.
      If you really want to have accurate measurements, you won't get them with a watch, a watch is not a medical device.
      I really like my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 because I have hypochondria and am really worried about my health basically all the time. This watch helps me to feel safe with my health because I don't need to worry about me having issues with heart rate or blood pressure. And if something would seem of, I can just check on my watch. And if my data is somewhat weird for a week or longer I can visit my doctor and can even show data, with which my doctor then can test the right things to determine what exactly and how bad the health issue is.
      It's a bit strange that people expect a tiny watch on your wrist to be able to do the same, as a whole cabort filled with medical devices in a doctors office...

      @@MarcoPolo82I'm actually mostly interested in a smart watch for the health and activity/fitness data. I couldn't care less about notifications, they are already annoying on my phone, I'd probably deactivate them on a watch. The problem with a Garmin is that a) according to his videos they aren't great at tracking either and b) you don't wear a chest strap 24/7, so if you have heart palpitations like me, you want a more continuous tracking. Regarding the price it's interesting that some cheaper watches (Huawai for example) are much better with tracking than the Samsung watch and Apple is miles better, while costing "only" about 100 Euro more. That's not nothing, but considering that one delivers pretty accurate data and the other does not... would buy an Apple watch in a heartbeat if I wouldn't be stuck in the Samsung/Android ecosystem with my phone and tablet.

    • @DRT813
      @DRT813 2 месяца назад

      Apple Watch is $400 rn, so that's just 100 bucks more. That's expensive, but compared to spending $300 for inaccurate health data... The bigger problem is the cost of an iPhone compared to a Samsung phone, which sadly I can't afford, so I'm stuck with watches that give me data that might be right or might be wrong (but why would I need it in the first place then?).

    • @SQUID0NKEY
      @SQUID0NKEY 2 месяца назад +1

      @DRT813 Well, the galaxy watch 4 only costs about 100 bucks rightnow, according to this guy, it's the best one of the galaxy watches that is almost as good as the apple watches. That's 300 bucks less than the cheapest Apple watch. If you ask me, Apple is still way too expensive in general...

    Thank you for your hard work! I was really looking forward to change my watch 4 however with your review I do not consider it to be worth it. The strange thing is that apple watch is almost perfect in tracking and samsung had lots of time to figure this out but they somehow haven't. I will be waiting for watch 7 and hope this would change.

    Thank you so much for your work! 👍✌👏Your test is more than useful to us. ☝💪I recommend to you: when you test a brand newest invention, please test again the older model again beside of the newest. It better to see the actual situation. We can get better reference points. 1 measuring is not a measuring - I learnt this fact. Do not compare the newest model's test to a 1-2 year(s) old results. When we compare to the whole group OK, but not quite good when we check the brand opportunities. Many softwares have been changed until this period. That's my recommendation.

      Amazing to hear! I'm considering buying a cheaper GW5, and your Sleep Tracking EEG comparisons are the most useful information regarding their performance on the whole internet@@TheQuantifiedScientist Would so cool if GW5 could compete with at least the lower performing Apple watches. From what I've heard there was a slight downgrade in sensors between the GW5, and GW6, because Samsung was concerned about their sensor light disrupting sleep or something? So it's possible that with the latest updates GW5 is the better performer in this test
