  • George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary male pigeon courting a female pigeon, I thought it was quite cute that he was persistent. Notice the goose walking by.

There is this white pigeon that comes often to my terrace.- Then when a female appears, he rapidly flies towards her and begins to court.

A gender, species, and individual identity advertising display, but rarely a mating display. Female Pigeons rarely perform this dance unless they have just won a cooperative fight alongside their mates in defense of the pair's nesting or roosting territory. The display in wild Rock Pigeons shows off the iridescent neck, dark gray bars against the paler scapulars, red iris coloring (a Pigeon's pupils shrink as the iris expands when the bird is dancing) and periodically spread and lowered tail feathers. Most domestic and feral Pigeons are lacking one or more of these features, but this male has the ancestral blue bar colors and patterns, and thus has all of them.
This is rarely a 'mating dance', because it leads directly to mating only when a paired female is interested in "cheating" with a male who is not her partner (although Pigeons usually form long term or permanent pair bonds, both males and females readily "cheat"). In this case, she will crouch for mating in response to his dance if her mate isn't around to stop the rival male. Bonded pairs of Pigeons go through an elaborate sequence of "ritual preening" and "bill kissing" (there are lots of videos showing these on RUclips) before mating; they almost never progress directly to mating after the male dances to his partner. This is also why you generally see female Pigeons seemingly ignoring males dancing their courtship dance.
Unpaired females seeking a mate will show interest in a courting male, but will not initially mate with him. If he already has a partner, he will not persistently court her, and she will reject him as a prospective mate, because he will not court her like a single male if his present female is alive and in good health.

Lololol this is not cute 😂 she's running away. it's harassment. Rock pigeons are the worst and they remind me of aggressive NYC guys. Lolol
Wood pigeon courting is actually cute ^-^ and they'll dance together.
