The sad demise of a once great Scottish football club - Clydebank FC

- Clydebank FC were a once great football club. They had fantastic players such as Davie Cooper who also played for Motherwell FC and Rangers FC.
Situated in Glasgow, Scotland, Clydebank FC now have a phoenix club born out of the club of old. Awful mismanagement meant the original club went bust.

Bankies fan here! Great video mate. Clydebank are on the way back!
Cheers! I hope I can get to a game at Holm Park soon!
What division are you in? Would love to see you in the lowland league and back in league 2 and 1 and championship
@@leeiscool1299 WOSFL premier division, one league below the lowland
Great video..I have so much affinity to Clydebank as their demise so mirrors my own club Wimbledon's. Owner selling ground to retailers, no re-location plan, mooted moves to Dublin, supporters boycotting, new record low attendance, another club involved in the injustice..however both clubs fans have stayed loyal and reformed their clubs and both now have new Stadiums to build a future on..a bright future
Yeah couldn't agree more! The new Wimbledon stadium looks class. Would love to see some games there in 2021!
Kilbowie Park was actually the first "all seater" ground in the UK.
The seats were wooden benches on the old terracing, but it still counted!
Cool good to know! Other sources say it's Aberdeen!
@@FootyAdventures Aberdeen I believe were the 1st covered seated stadium but Clydebank were definitely the 1st all seater, benches, stadium
Great footage of the old Kilbowie Park here ruclips.net/video/WbUpvI8OVBY/видео.html
it depresses me that old Kilbowie Park is now a retail park, used to love going to the games as a kid some of my best early memories of football
Enjoyed your video. I'm a Clydebank supporter who enjoyed many happy years watching them play at Kilbowie, a great eee stadium, and as others have said the first all seated in Scotland. Watched Davie Cooper at both his stints at Clydebank, the early years and then when he came back. Saw the Bankies play Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden Park and the Junior Cup Final at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock that you mentioned. Supported them at the various temporary home grounds you mentioned (when ground sharing with Dumbarton and Morton) and as they re-established in the Junior Leagues. Not able to get to current games because of COVID, but the team is doing well in the new West of Scotland League and still have dream of seeing them work their way back to the highest leagues in the Scottish structure. Great memories. 🙂
Grew up a stone's throw away from Kilbowie, and still live in Clydebank. Its a town that desperately needs our club back as a professional team.I seen everyone there in the 80s and 90s growing up from Celtic to Rangers Aberdeen,Hibs Hearts them all.Plenty of millionaires from Clydebank that could help such as Duncan Bannatyne,The Wets ,Kevin Bridges to name a few.
Davie Cooper what a legend and a great player. Great to see you in a Scottish shirt and yes we won last night ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Yep, England v Scotland next year!!!
One of the best scots to grace a football field tragedy been taken for to young
Sad about Clydebank, and sad about the untimely death of Davie Cooper. He was by far the best player I ever watched in a Rangers shirt. Most significantly he was just a humble lad from Hamilton who shunned the limelight. He could have played at the top level in England, but preferred playing for Rangers, and living in his hometown. Legend.
Definitely sad what happened to both the team and Davie himself. Shows what a player he was to have a statue in his honour!
I signed for Clydebank the same night as Davie Cooper, we beat Partick Th 3-1. Jack Steadman asked us to wait upstairs from the changing sheds, it was a Monday/ Tuesday night ?? Davie was a fantastic player and showed his ability from Day one.
The club should have been better administrated.
Quality video mate. I stay in Clydebank and it’s a shame the club no longer there. They play at Holm park and share with Yoker. Good to see you do a video on the club. It’s sad to see that where u were at the start of the video is where the stadium used to stand.
Thanks mate
I’ve learnt something new today when I stumbled across this video. Well put together and narrated.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks very much!
Good video. You should look up the history of Drumchapel Amateurs in the 70s & 80s! David Moyes dad was heavily involved and produced a lot of known players
Agreed!
I was fortunate enough to see David Cooper play for Clydebank in the 70s. I remember as a wee boy standing pitch side at Kilbowie when he roared down the wing, what an inspiration he was and such a great player. Never to be forgotten.
Great memories jumping off that train to play my football, part-time then 2yrs full-time at Clydebank.. So many great memories.. Thanks footy Adventures. 😎👍
When I was a kid growing up watching football in the 70s all the super stars were Scottish and that’s a fact, that’s why England dominated Europe, we didn’t need any foreigners, Scottish football has been in decline for a while now, don’t think it’s just Clydebank, Leeds fan 👍
Clydebank FC has had several manifestations, with big gaps in between. The 1965-2002 Clydebank was the one you were talking about at the beginning, which played at Kilbowie Park.
The original Clydebank FC existed between 1914 and 1931 and played at Clydeholm, which was quite a big stadium just across the main road from Holm Park. It was also a greyhound track, and continued as that after the football club folded. A set of big tower blocks was built on the site when Clydeholm was demolished and those, in turn, have now also been demolished. I don't know what will now be built on the Clydeholm site, presumably more housing but not tower blocks.
The present Clydebank played the 2018-19 season at Maryhill FC while Holm Park was completely revamped, which was badly needed. It had previously been arguably the most depressing dump in junior football. In particular, two drops of water was enough to turn the pitch into a quagmire. There isn't much between Holm Park and the Clyde and at high tide the river can be higher than the pitch, so it wants in there. There is now an artificial pitch as well as new terracing and the quagmire problem has been solved.
Great video thanks for telling our story, a part of me dies every time I see a pic or footage of that retail outlet over Kilbowie!
Great video Sir. Would be good to see Clydebank back in the professional leagues. Davie Cooper was one of the best players Scotland has ever produced. RIP Davie, never forgotten.
Thank you!
Virtually the whole of this video is a reminder of my youth and early twenties as a player (queens park, clyde, albion rovers)... i played against clydebank a number of times, at kilbowie park... one of my mates played for Dumbarton (before the ground-share with the bankies)... ie tommy mcadam (who went on to play centre-forward for celtic, and his brother, colin, played for rangers... rip big cad)... i moved away from scotland in my mid-twenties so to hear of the decline of the bankies is a shock... good video, thanks for making it
So happy Scotland qualified! Just a shame Northern Ireland couldn't join as it would've been nice to have all four Home Nations at a tournament for the first time since 1958.
I love your passion and enthusiasm for the minnows of football….the origins of football teams and early history is knowledge thirsty.
Great video, thank you. I was a regular at Kilbowie during Davie Cooper’s playing days. He could absolutely annihilate opponents at times and the fans used to just chuckle at Coop’s latest victim. He was always destined for the top. Good to see the Hibbie (Glenhead Park) in the video too
I really like all this history type videos you do! Even in the small lower clubs there is much history. Cheers 👍😁
I watched Davie Cooper at Kilbowie .What a brill player. i think it was 1976 or 77 . The Bankies beat Rangers in the cup and sure enough.. The Gers bought him. they had reinforced glass in the social club cause the Baw would have smashed the windies. i remember the cheers as people in the club ducked if it got to close at speed. ..what a great ground right in the centre of kilbowie road and the Rangers bus left from the Atlantis pub only 2 hunner yards away . lmao,.. any way good memories
I was at that game. I’ll. ever forget David Cooper that night.
Clydebank were promoted to the Premier Division in 1977. A covered plastic-seated stand was built, which was funded by selling star player Davie Cooper for £100,000 to Rangers. To avoid having to apply legislation affecting stadium safety, the club installed wooden benches that reduced the capacity to 9,950. This was below the 10,000 limit at which the legislation started to apply and technically made Kilbowie the first all-seater stadium in the United Kingdom.
The Duntocher Glenhead park, which is known as the Hibee,is in Clydebank aswell.Any games that got played there we watched from the grass hill opposite the stand. Thanks for the video pal.
Well presented clip. QPR fan but Clydebank was always the Scottish club I looked out for.
Nice, cheers Nigel!
Thanks for doing this and for listening to your viewers, another great video mate 👍
Cheers Craig, glad you think so!
Great vlog sir! My mother used to work in the bankies club when I was a wee lad. Davie Cooper was one of my heroes RIP!
Thank you!
I saw Davie Cooper play @ Ibrox in 1986, although I'm blind as a bat (shortsighted, & didn;t have glasses to wear) and I didn't know much about Rangers (I was on holiday from Australia) I could spot Cooper unmistakably by his unbelievable dribbling skills.
Nice! I wish I could've been at a match of his!
@@FootyAdventures That's okay, I wish I was your age again
Looks like a return visit may be necessary after their excellent win in the Cup last Saturday! Excellent video as always.
Drumchapel Amateurs have had the likes of Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Walter Smith, Archie Gemmill and Jim Forrest play for them. They actually have quite a good history for such a small club
they did... i played against them a few times as a teenager before going pro (see my comments elsewhere in the stream)
Been to kilbowie early 80s n seen Clydebank in their junior format too against bonnyrigg rose still got a good support can still remember their clubhouse behind the goals
Loved the video and grew up in Clydebank and started going when a pal was Manager a few years ago and went back for the Cup run 2 seasons ago.
Gleanhead Park in Clydebank though, not outside - in a wee place called Duntocher.
Shame no footage or pictures shown of the old Kilbowie Park though, would have been a nice touch Sam albeit you like to show places where you are in vision.
Cant wait for the England - Scotland game in the euros! Hopefully as sold out wembley stadium! Fingers crossed covid wont be a problem in time for the euros
That would be insane mate!!!
Way to fuck stay on your own side that wall
@@christroytrigger.1419 chris many people in Scotland abhor Sturgeon and SNP ..were not all anti-English nobody I speak to like her ...from a unionist
Love the videos. Drumchapel are definitely worth a look into. Played there a few seasons ago. Great club and well run with some big names in their history
Cheers dude 🥃
Well done Scotland on qualifying ⚽🎉
what a player he was much respect from a Glesga Arab 🙏 + couldn't imagine losing your club they way they did very sad but at least they're still alive somewhat 🙏
Love these vids. Went to see Clydebank v Hibs early 1990’s Scottish Cup tie. Tough game. Wooden bench seats I call to remember. Shame about their demise.
"Kilbowie, Kilbowie, we're the famous Clydebank FC and we come from Kilbowie!" 🔴⚪ ⚫
Very cool video! So interesting to hear the history of Clydebank FC! It's unfortunate that poor ownership caused them to collapse, but it's great that a phoenix club had risen with great support! The Junior League scene in Scotland is quite fascinating as well. Great job! 👊
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed :)
Good efforts with the video's, & good to hear about teams competing at same level as ourselves. Would be great if interested in visiting our ground, St. Anthony's F.C., who also compete in WOSFL, & have our own wee story to tell. Can get you access no bother, into wee clubhouse, etc, & fill you in a some history. Would be good to see us featured, cheers! 👍
Super copper a true Bankies legend. I met him when I used to go watch the Bankies
Nice! Seen some of his highlights. Looks unreal!
@@FootyAdventures he was fantastic. I look down to where kilbowie Park used to be everyday and remember the fond memories. Did you know it was the first all seater stadium in Britain too. Keep up the videos mate I love them
Remember growing up following the Bankies.Great video Ken Eadie was your main man 🧡
Was at Kilbowie in 1967 when Clydebank played a very strong Chelsea team twice in six weeks. The first game finished 2-2 and I remember Osgood scored. Chelsea won the second game quite easily, 4-1 or 4-2
Oh cool! Wish I could've seen a game there!
I remember when they were sponsored by the band: wet, wet, wet in the 1990s.
A video everyone should enjoy . I went to a Clydebank v St Mirren midweek game and I was amazed to see that one of the ends was a social club ! A real shame the Bankies went under like another famous Clydeside club, Third Lanark.
Superb video once again, i saw the Bankies playing many times.
Glad you enjoyed it!
After a merger of Clydebank Junior FC with League club East Stirlingshire they played as East Stirlingshire Clydebank F.C. (Season 1964-65). They de-merged after one season and played in the Scottish League in their own right .
Great vid, and good content. Well researched. Davie Cooper was a great player and gentleman. Had lots of time for the up and coming players.
Thank you, really appreciate that
Could the neds who put Celtic stickers and scratch out info on the plaque of DC. Grow up and give it a rest. He was one of Scotlands great players so please show some recpect.
Not sure if youve been back since then but actually feels like the club is on its way back slowly! Its great.
OMG i love it thankyou from a Bankie Boy.
Another great vlog.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Continue the great work that youre doing
Hi from greece
Thanks! Hopefully I can come back to Greece for more games eventually!
Love to All Greece from Scotland.
Love you to, I yould also like to come to Scotland
Great video. One fact that you got wrong was that the match against east Stirling with 29 fans was mainly made up of Clydebank fans as I was one of them.
Nice one. ⚽️
Clydebank were always my wee team. I saw a 2 all draw friendly against Chelsea in 67 at Kilbowie was staying at my cousins in drumchapel for school holidays 😂🏴
Been waiting for this video. Another great one 👏🏻
grew up going to the games at clydebank fc... we used to live in the white flats right next to the ground
Eamon Dunphy ex Manchester United and Millwall Irish international was involved in that ridiculous idea of relocation to Dublin instead of putting his own town first and supporting one of the 6 Dublin clubs. It drew fury from fans here in Dublin as well as Clydebank and was a non runner.
Nice piece of journalism. Well done that man.
Thank you very much!
Interesting club Clydebank. Good video.
Talking of bad ownership Michael Knighton investigated Carlisle United resigning the English League and merging with Clydebank in 1998. Plan was to play at Brunson park.
The ‘wet wet wet’ shirt was an interesting point. First club sponsored by a pop group.
Yoker!! You’ve nay business in Yoker!
Round the back and straight down to the end near the grass verge once had a small Ash pitch with a single goal
Great video totally enjoyed it have you done a Stranraer video yet! Can’t find one ! Well done to 🏴Scotland in the euros
Thank you! And no, Stranraer is still to come! (This side of Christmas)
Remember many games v the Bankies Love to see them back
My only visit to Kilbowie was in 1992, watching Cowdenbeath get beat off the Bankies 3-1 in the Scottish cup. Quite liked the ground.
Great vid mate !! You should go to drumchapel and check out the team there , they have joined the pro ranks and worth a look .
They were in the Premier League as recently as 1986/87. Always had Jim Gallacher in goals, who looked about fifty in his mid-twenties!
Fun fact, the rock band ACDC supported Clydebank... as did the the pop ban Wet, Wet Wet ... who both sponsored them at one time.
Haha great fact!
He was my favourite player when I was at school
GBNF the legendary moody blue, Davie Cooper, pure genius.... our game is worse of as a whole losing such a talent that wouldve passed on his knowledge to a new generation of players.
That junior cup final was some day out, bullet header from big Chris! Remember it like it was yesterday, Bankies were very unlucky that day. Great day out to rugby park!
Sounds class mate!
I’ve subbed and told my pals about you, keep it up big man👍
@@fridgefridgeson7892 you absolute legend! thank you
Back the 80s, I used to get liftys into the game from strangers. In the 90s I used its derelict stadium as a alcoholic drug den. Great memories.
Great vid as always, wondered what happened to Clydebank.
Cheers!
Davie Cooper was a brilliant player. Went to a few Clydebank games at Kilbowie many years ago.
G
Great vid.
Thanks John!
Weld done to Scotland for qualifying for Euro 2021
john robertson- forest and scotland legend started at drumchapel if my memory serves me right
You wearing the perfect football shirt today mate great result lastnight
Great insight 👏👏
Cheers son!
In the ' 70 s we were a great team with fantastic players ......Jim Fallon , Gallacher etc . The Steedmans put them on the map though their subsequent actions were dubious . Many a game I watched in those halycon days standing and then sitting in Kilbowie . I remember a great cup tie against Celtic that had to be abandoned with us well on top at half time (conspiracy theories abound ).Really miss the Bankies .
They sound like an amazing club!
Remember to do St Bernard's a old Edinburgh Club! They won the Scottish Cup in 1894-95 beating another old ex Scottish club Renton.
Definitely get a video about Scotland qualifying!!!
Yeah I probably need to!
@@FootyAdventures
100% you need to.
In a few months time you should do killwining rangers but in a multi stadium episode as Irvine medow Irvine vics ardeer thistle are all in the area but killwining isn’t finished yet
I can't be sure but I think my old man played for clydebank or Clyde way way back late 30s his name was Norman nick name was blondie he was from Baileston Glasgow my gran was a member of the clydeside reds party which caused the family grief by the authorities for protesting over poverty
Great wee vid , cheers m8
Thanks!
Great player seen him play for all his teams
Nice! What a legend
No, Glenhead Park is IN Clydebank. Duntocher is part of Clydebank. Drumchapel isn't, it's in Glasgow, but they don't actually play in Drumchapel.
never new this so much you learn
You should look into the Airdrieonians story that predated the demise of Clydebank FC and led to the purchase of Clydebank.
Thanks - Meadowbank Thistle would be another good video to feature...
Well done 👍 great video . Do Gretna living the dream . As a Queen of the South fan I despise the club .
Thanks! Yeah, the southern scottish teams are coming soon!
Happy days at Kilbowie with Motherwell and if remember we beat them 6 or 7 -1 and was behind their goal winding up their keeper about his bad back picking ball out of the net.
Great video, WE ARE GOING TO THE EUROS!!!
Thanks! And yeah cant wait!
On our way to the EUROS🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for your great video
Thank you for watching!
Fantastic video very informative
Glad you liked it, Cheers!
Interesting video mate
Thanks 👍
Played here Sunday league. Great ground
Bankies fan here, you'll see us up the top in a few years; trust me.
Hopefully!
was in hamburg last year and met some rangers lads with a massive union jack with clydebank written on it ?? confused/ ?? Iwas ;)
Ah man wish you had said to the club you were coming up, they could have got you in for a wee tour etc. Thanks for bringing my club to more people. We feel close to clubs like AFC Wimbledon etc because we went through the same things at the same time. Our club means so much to us, its a credit to its community, we came from nothing in 2002 to the present day with a youth academy to rival any professional club in Scotland (led by Uefa licensed coaches), to u21s, girls, sunday and saturday amateur club and community outreach including food bank donations and work with Syrian Refugees settled in the area. It is a shame what happened happened but I for one wouldnt change a thing now. We are a forward thinking club with a lot to offer, led by a fantastic board and trust and the future is very bright. If anyone fancies owning a share of the club just follow www.clydebankfc.com/the-trust/join-the-trust/
👏👏 Brilliant video!
