its a great farm however the rates are too small for it to be worth the effort, it is just easier to spend half an hour extra time and buid the water bucket dispenser ones with redstone clocks. also you would not be able to farm spiders with this design

that flushing design you are talking about isn't mob + xp very easily, it is mob only

I wait for the lava but it never seems to touch the bottom so the water then also never creates the full column. Any tips?

when u wait and if it doesnt come down again then go jump in the water puddle and then check lava to see if its going down because its a render glitch
