Wow. So helpful. “I” did not realize “my” practice is quite in line with this secular aspect. I simply waste no time thinking about the dogmatic concepts often found in “reincarnation” etc. great value in hearing this from other practitioners Hapchang
Equanimity meditations (wishing well to a self, friend, aquaintance, and unfriendly) are often used in Recovery Dharma. They can help people turn around ourward anger and dissolve what makes us separate. Self-kindness can be new to people as well. Allowing oneself imperfection, impermanence, and then reflecting outward. Also dissolving inward anger and what makes us separate. Doug was right it feels like forced motions. But once I did it, I knew the unwinding nature of these practices; over time there was less dislike, and less difficulties as a consequence of dislike.
About the Buddha's reaction to teachings that were current in his own day, an emulation of the Buddha perhaps includes some responsiveness to ideas that are floating about in our times. Such ideas can include how Buddhism is taught or interpreted (as well as how other religious/philosophical/contemplative practices are understood). Not suggesting that we all become contrarians, but that we allow ourselves degrees of freedom that mirror what our particular lives and experiences are telling us -- that the Buddha's own inquisitiveness is a model for such responses. Wonderful, thought-provoking talk. Many thanks to you both.
Thank you Doug and Jason for this insightful and informative interview. Refreshing to have a host remember that it's not all about them! Really looking forward to this series. With gratitude, Rob.

There are no answers to 'meta-physical' or speculative questions ( eg. Is there a self or a non self?, Why the sun rises from the East?, etc ) because of the limitations of words or language to answer them. The Buddha always keeps silent when being asked those questions. Being silent, and silence is the answer to those questions. However there are 'answers' to those questions by the Zen method ( a skillful means of) by 'direct pointing' ( to the seekers' Mind to trigger a sudden wake-up!! 🤯💥 in themselves) as practiced by (awakened) Zen Buddhist Masters.😊🙏🙇♂️🌷
