Hi. Nice photos! Just a tip from my experience shooting bw film with a yellow filter. It really only does "something" on a sunny day when there's actually a lot of blue light bouncing around. In those conditions it will darken the sky and it will lighten the foliage. In overcast condition it will only cut your exposure by 1/2 stop and pretty much not do much else. The only other application when it seems to be worth losing that 1/2 stop of light is using it to shoot portraits of mature people. The yellow filter will lighten the red spots on their wrinkle and their lips.
I don’t know why you’re getting so much hate in the comments. I’ve been a little critical of your photos in the past but I think you did an excellent job in this video. Photos looked very nice and i got a fun tour of a beautiful city
Been with your Channel in a long period of time & I’ve never not been not satisfied. I’ve learned so much from your work & has inspired me in the way I work. Truely a dope photographer.
hey! i'm from Napoli and i love your videos. Actually i shot film photo too. I would have liked to meet you, maybe for the next time! i hope you enjoy Naples and thanks for choosing this city for your project
Another great video man, looks like a sweet place to explore with film and a nice experience for you both. I did like the yellow filter look but sad about that last roll!!
f So sad about the blank roll! I can relate, often... lol. I recently slapped on a yellow filter on my camera too and I enjoy the results. Looks like you had a wonderful trip doing what you want. Keep enjoying yourself.
Love Naples, such a great city. 2 stops compensation is overkill for a yellow filter, you can get away with 1.5 stops for an orange filter, you probably want more like 0.5 - 1 stop depending on how strong the yellow is.
why did you have to push the HP5 so extremely? coming from a leaf-shutter i was like " no i would have to bring the aperture down all the way all the time even with PANF50" but you use 400ASA and the grain looks like Delta 3200 pushed to 6400 hehe also why are the skies so blown with the yellow filter? not meant as an offense, i am just interested :)
In my experience the yellow filter only enhances the contrast in the sky&clouds when there is blue sky involved. Because that will show as a really dark contrast to the white clouds.
Great video, really liked the shots. You might have mentioned that ttl metering will normally compensate for filters (at least those that have a filter factor of a few stops). Additionally, that there are yellow filters of varying strength. Yours appeared to be possibly a #15 deep yellow - I thought those shots were fantastic.
Gorgie, are you sure the filter doesn't say filter factor 2x? That means 1 stop overexposure needed. I think you may have overexposed your shots a bit, which is why they look so grainy. Compare the grain between the last two images for instance. :-)
When I used to lecture back in the day about Photography I would always address the subject of using filters by stating that one needs to decide if they want to depict the truth or lean towards the aesthetic/ decorative interpretation of an actual scene. Haze in Naples is a reality. It adds to the atmosphere of the place..its integal to the narrative, by using a Yellow filter you're altering the reality . A lot if not most of the artists you emulate don't use a filter at all and never will other than perhaps a clear one just to protect a lens . I was originally sent a link of your Eastman House visit by a former student. I've seen a few of your videos. Keep up the good work! I think in a few yrs your work will evolve just fine. Cheers !
Yay -- finally filters for b&w shots! Nearly no one making vlogs does this, and it shows with their blown out skies with no clouds. Next up, a 2-stop GND for those shots with a horizon. :) BTW, an orange does wonders with brick buildings, and makes the clouds pop even more -- a good investment.
(if anyone cares i vlog and that🐸) i recently got a super cheap 35mm point and shoot camera and some how stumbled on your channel and wooooow i know exactly how i wanna shoot / document film and my vlogs. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKKKK
Where were all the motorbikes in the backstreets? I couldn't chill in Napoli when walking down the road - I always felt like I was going to be hit by a bike or ca :) It's been years though..
I live in northern italy, yet i've never been to Naples in 23 years. The videos and the pics are really inviting tough. The Leica coped well, that what is was meant for, still i'd have considered to bring the M7, i'd have loved to see the crisp 6x7 negs out of such a city.
The pizza in Naples was some of the best pizza I've ever had. Dat Buffalo Mozzarella! The driving is the craziest driving I've ever seen though. People will literally stop and drive in reverse on a high speed highway if they miss an exit.
pen marks I really dont think so...I’m from an italian family and of course passion is a thing. Down south is not as wealthy as up north so you might want to be careful but Italians are as lovers as fighters.
i walked around naples in 99 as a young hipster with my mother and a widelux. she got dragged down a road by a scooterino thief who wanted her handbag, good job she never let go as it had the widelux in it. a day later, i tried photographing an african lady in a square with a shopping trolley full of colourful stuff to sell, she screamed and shouted at me, and i at her, and i got a horrid headache and crap pictures. pizza was very good. haven't been back and frankly without connections there, would not bother.
no mate green filters for portait to bring out the skin tone more in B&W film I always am asking my supplier little things like that info is coming from someone that is 48yrs in the game
You should try experimenting with ND 10 filters. I stack a red filter behind it as well as pushing 2 stops (total: 15 stops) to make some pretty striking landscape photos
NegativeFeedback yeah, I shoot black and white so I haven’t dealt with that issue. The B+W filter I have had that issue when I used Portra (forever ago)
Hi there, I got a question. When I shoot with red/yellow filter on...to compensate the shot do I need to push the ISO then develop it at box speed or pull the ISO then develop it at box speed? thanks
Sorry for the late reply but you deserve an answer and I guess no one else here cares enough to respond. If you shoot a yellow filter you will normally need to over expose the film +1 stop when taking a photo. But in development you would develop the film @ box speed (if you are basing your +1 overexposed stop already off of the box speed, i.e. Portra 400 would need to be metered and shot for 200ISO). For red it's most commonly +3 stops of light, fyi.
f ... what I do with my M6 is when I close the bottom plate and start winding up, I put my ear close to the body and you can hear the film being advanced ..
Summary of a joke-possibly well known, sorry-about which this video reminds me: American goes to a bull fight in Madrid. After, he goes to the restaurant across the street and orders the “speciality of the house”. The waiter brings a covered dish with two huge, tasty pieces of meat under. He says, “These are the testicles of the bull, just valiantly killed during the corrida across the street.” The American was impressed with the dish and delighted with the taste. The next day, the American went to the restaurant, not bothering with the bull fight, and ordered the “speciality of the house”. The waiter returned with a covered dish with two tiny bits of meat under. The American protested, “Waiter, I ordered the speciality of the house. What in tarnation is this?” The waiter replied, “Si Señor, sometimes the bull wins.” Every one of your videos, including this one, have been interesting and informative. More often than not, I like the pictures. These pictures, technically, look like some of my less satisfactory efforts but they are still yours, still interesting, and I still liked the video, bravo. As to those who chose to post a single letter-some expressing their creativity by capitalizing the letter-for their comments (and especially to the commenter who unsubscribed), I ask, what is your speciality?
blaxton2 As an American, I am insulted by your joke (admittedly we are low-hanging fruit presently). As a lover of red meat, I don't know how I feel about it...
Richard G I might better have made the subject a “foreigner” or tourist and avoided the risk of offending people on two continents. It’s true about the low-hanging fruit. I remember when our country was admired by nearly everyone on the planet. Sometimes the bull wins.
Dude, I know it's your style and I dig it... But why do you keep making the video boxes so small? Like they keep getting smaller and smaller. One day you're gonna be made up of a couple pixels
When he is recording with front camera on iPhone he is shrinking the video a bit because of the poor quality. But whenever he is recording with the back camera (4K) he puts it on big. At least thats what I noticed. I might be wrong tho
He probably was staying somewhere near Quartieri Spagnoli judging by the narrow roads where he started some shots and the proximity to the Vesuvio, but it's far from being the upmost place in Napoli 'cause outside the city center there's this district called Colli Aminei where you can really see almost every bit of the city

They’re mediocre as fuck and people are hyping him up Bc UTUBER
"the cars do drive directly next to you " WELCOME TO SOUTH ITALY MY FRIEND
Damn mate walking around with a camera in Naples. Balls of steel and I'm from the south of Italy...
why would u choose to shoot b&w in such a colorful city????
do what i want
we are in 2018, practically every thing its overdone...
black and white is a color only the blind can see
I thought the photos looked great!!
Jamie Hoy so tru
Been with your Channel in a long period of time & I’ve never not been not satisfied. I’ve learned so much from your work & has inspired me in the way I work. Truely a dope photographer.
I‘d like to see the fotos that baily has taken too :)
Eileen Welzel bump
yup. can we find her on ig?
Probs won't happen, think about how many female photographers are featured on this channel...oh yeah not even three.
Wul it's probably not a conscious decision
Oh boo hoo
Love the graininess and composition of all the shots
Gorgeous colors!
F for the empty film, a W for the haircut at the end.
Beautiful colours and very chill vibes! Thanks for being on youtube ^^
Ohh man the composition in this videos and photos are very great!
hey! i'm from Napoli and i love your videos. Actually i shot film photo too. I would have liked to meet you, maybe for the next time! i hope you enjoy Naples and thanks for choosing this city for your project
Can’t believe you were here! I’ve just landed back in London from Naples shooting my first lot of 35 mm film :)
You’re gaining some authority, but still with the gentleness. I’m a fan.
Can I just say thank you for making shooting film populair via this RUclips channel - consistent 🤘🏽
Another great video man, looks like a sweet place to explore with film and a nice experience for you both. I did like the yellow filter look but sad about that last roll!!
The colour filter creates contrast between colours and pushing the film creates contrast by narrowing dynamic range so they are not the same.
f So sad about the blank roll! I can relate, often... lol. I recently slapped on a yellow filter on my camera too and I enjoy the results. Looks like you had a wonderful trip doing what you want. Keep enjoying yourself.
You were in my home town. Cool to see your take on it...
Can we see Bailey's photos too?!
if youre talking about the girl, i would be interested in her camera model, is this an original Ricoh compact?
Love Naples, such a great city. 2 stops compensation is overkill for a yellow filter, you can get away with 1.5 stops for an orange filter, you probably want more like 0.5 - 1 stop depending on how strong the yellow is.
You only need to compensate with 1 stop of extra exposure for a 2x yellow filter not 2 stops. Factor 2x = 1 stop, Factor 4x = 2 stops etc.
why did you have to push the HP5 so extremely?
coming from a leaf-shutter i was like " no i would have to bring the aperture down all the way all the time even with PANF50" but you use 400ASA and the grain looks like Delta 3200 pushed to 6400 hehe

not meant as an offense, i am just interested :)
7:00 is an incredible shot, just beautiful and really interesting given the subject
In my experience the yellow filter only enhances the contrast in the sky&clouds when there is blue sky involved. Because that will show as a really dark contrast to the white clouds.
Great episode & pictures! I need to try a filter like this one...
I could never imagine him getting angry or annoyed with anyone or anything, its marvellous, what a great human being. haha :)
Great video, really liked the shots. You might have mentioned that ttl metering will normally compensate for filters (at least those that have a filter factor of a few stops). You get grain by underexposing, not so much by overexposing.
When I used to lecture back in the day about Photography I would always address the

F.... Love your videos man. Best film photography vlog on RUclips. Would be great to hear you talk about the thought behind your shots! ✌️
Ayyy, what a coincidence, I'm going to Naples this summer!
(if anyone cares i vlog and that🐸) i recently got a super cheap 35mm point and shoot camera and some how stumbled on your channel and wooooow i know exactly how i wanna shoot / document film and my vlogs. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKKKK
wow ok
Joe Greer you’re a legend
Where were all the motorbikes in the backstreets? I couldn't chill in Napoli when walking down the road - I always felt like I was going to be hit by a bike or ca :)
It's been years though..
I use a yellow filter all the time with b and white. It has helped contrast for me. I use an Orange too.
short question: would you consider the empty roll having something to do with security x-ray on the airports?
I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS
I live in northern italy, yet i've never been to Naples in 23 years. The videos and the pics are really inviting tough. The Leica coped well, that what is was meant for, still i'd have considered to bring the M7, i'd have loved to see the crisp 6x7 negs out of such a city.
Hey George what film did you use at the beginning of the vid? It's grainier than a grainy bowl of grainy porridge I like it
also nice haircut and f :-(
Agreed. Some are too grainy for ISO 400 unless it was pushed. Some shots looked like 1600 or even 3200.
HP5 according to the description but I'm guessing development went wrong. Way, way, way too much grain
You came to Naples! Hope you liked the city and the atmosphere she gives ((:
Is that your M6? I remember an old video you had mentioned selling it. Which cameras do you currently own? Thanks!
If you are interested in clouds the polarizer filter and the red filter will deliver and sepetate the dramatic dimension in clouds for your curiosity
The pizza in Naples was some of the best pizza I've ever had. Dat Buffalo Mozzarella! The driving is the craziest driving I've ever seen though. People will literally stop and drive in reverse on a high speed highway if they miss an exit.
yeah well they invented the modern pizza like
Thank you!
"Everyone wants to fight" hahahaha
Is that actually a thing?
pen marks I really dont think so...I’m from an italian family and of course passion is a thing. Down south is not as wealthy as up north so you might want to be careful but Italians are as lovers as fighters.
Okay that sounds good what means I'm still willing to visit it soon haha.
F, great vid George!
All those lovely colours in Naples make me feel extremely giddy
Nice photo on the back wall at the end...did you take that ?
Very beautiful city and chill video ✌📷 keep it up
I really enjoy your RUclips channel, and you got me back into Film photography, thank you.
i walked around naples in 99 as a young hipster with my mother and a widelux. she got dragged down a road by a scooterino thief who wanted her handbag, good job she never let go as it had the widelux in it. a day later, i tried photographing an african lady in a square with a shopping trolley full of colourful stuff to sell, she screamed and shouted at me, and i at her, and i got a horrid headache and crap pictures. pizza was very good. haven't been back and frankly without connections there, would not bother.
What’s the first song in this video. I’ve combed through all of LSOW’s music but can’t find it.
Skhathi Mthembu was a custom song that wasn’t released
You came to my city!!
If you came to Milan pls notice me, i'm a filmphotographer and i really enjoy your contents
I've seen you use an app for light metering in multiple videos. Which app is it ?
if you haven't already can you please test and review kentmere film!!
That's my city! ❤️
I heard the magenta filters are pretty cool have you tried that color bro
Green filter would like a word with you.
portait yes and the rest wit a little zest
no mate green filters for portait to bring out the skin tone more in B&W film I always am asking my supplier little things like that info is coming from someone that is 48yrs in the game
sceniCCCCC
What about a Q&A for next week??
You should try experimenting with ND 10 filters. I stack a red filter behind it as well as pushing 2 stops (total: 15 stops) to make some pretty striking landscape photos
Must be some long exposure times! I used a 10 stop ND in the LA videos for a few photos, but it gave a bit of a weird cast to my colour film
NegativeFeedback yeah, I shoot black and white so I haven’t dealt with that issue. The B+W filter I have had that issue when I used Portra (forever ago)
That’s lots of grain! I’d expect way less, especially on those sunny days

sorry to be a geek but what model leica is that? an MP but with a fast winder? Can you get M6's without writing on the front?
It looks to me like an M6 ttl LHSA version
Nice one, thank you.
You should try an Orange filter some time too
2:38 Ditta Artigianale mug! Amazing coffee shop in Florence
35mm film and pizzas ❤️
Hey George, big follower from Lagos Nigeria and i think it'd be nice for you to come around and explore the city landscape.
Would love to see your review on the xpan or makina! Thanks for sharing!
Do u have a video teaching how do u scan and grade your photos? If you don't we really need it 😩
Do you have any tips on flying with film because I've been wanting to do so but I'm nervous about how the xrays can affect the film
don't be nervous bro, just do what you want!
Lmao
if its high speed film, then instead of getting the film x-rayed, ask for a hand inspection.
F
One word: AWESOME!
why the video is composed with all different size of clips ? style or ? just asking
front facing camera on the iphone is 1080 and the rear is 4k
he does what he wants mate.
Grande bro io sono di Napoli!!
Wish I knew about audible when getting through camera lucida
Purchased your photobook 7 months ago, no package, no shipping number, no email contact reply, no contact feedback, so disappoint
luna eidolon negative feedback to negative feedback haha
mirzahaqim I don’t want do that in purpose but it’s make me confuse
George, teach us how you travel abroad with film please
Dude, I know it's your style and I dig it... But why do you keep making the video boxes so small? Like they keep getting smaller and smaller. One day you're gonna be made up of a couple pixels
u just dont understand
lol, yeah clearly not

Djibril it's not a bit, it's a lot
It is what it is :)
Love your videos 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
What’s the name of the place you can see the whole city from above?

Notification squaaaaad
why so grany mate?
Where you pushing your Hp5?
f chief
also your vlogs are therapeutic
F
and great video!
Yellow = 1 stop, Orange = 2 stops, Red = 3 stops, Yellow/Green = 1 stop, Green = 2 stops and Polarizer = 1.5 stops. Never use a Blue filter.
f you have inspired me to want to get into film.
colour or black and white?
Inigo Taylor both but I would like to dabble in black and white
Is that a M6 ?
That Pizza's made me so hungry, jealous of past you.
Very brave, walking with Leica in Spanish quarters..
pretty brave to bring a leica out in naples eh?
Why? Is it that unsafe there?
pickpocketing can happen, that's all, but it depends on where you go and how touristish you look, but really that's not the rule, no matter all the well known clichés about Naples
i hope you'll came for a trip, you will change your mind by yourself. Well is not the most safe city in the world, but all you know about this city is true just for a really small part of it.

most of the time it was hidden under a pizza.
The grain is horrid. Why don't you just use a CPL or variable ND? Great photos nonetheless. I love Naples! Try Trieste!
cuz he doez juzt what he wantz M8!
I don't understand this video has less than 10k views
I lived there for a while.
