On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

Technically Astra Mk3 (not Mk2, Mk3) is also in development trials since 2019 at least. Its just that those trials are ground launched, not air launched yet. But we'll get there: Indian meteor basically.

@12:42 There is also a battery that drains out very quickly. for example an Amraam can only guide for around 80 seconds in a nice warm weather. if it is cold and high altitude that can be reduced to much much less. in DCS I think it is set to around 80 seconds.

One of the key points these BVR fights illustrate is how on board fighter defensive measures such as chaff and flares have become progressively less effective over the last decade or so.
Modern missiles have made the close in dogfight so dangerous that it is questionable as to the usefulness of super agile fighters.
Even a superb maneuvering jet like F22 can not out turn a 20G capable missile. What is needed are better defensive counter measures, laser dazzlers against optic guidance, more seductive chaff and infrared lures or else the jet fighter at close range is just too easy a target for these modern highly capable missiles.
Yeah, that's been my take. Modern air engagements inside 40 miles are getting to be almost like a dogfight with the new long range missiles everyone is fielding. 50/50 chance. Just like GS says... Modern tactics are going to require that they stay at least 50 miles away.

To me, personally, the analog of the MiG-29 and Su-27 is if the USAF bought a "mini" version of the F-15, instead of the F-16. Something like a 2/3s scale F-15 with F404s.
Or if the YF-17 won the lightfighter tender.
Meanwhile, the USN and USMC with their F-18 Cs and Ds. 😂😂

just curious, I checked the specs of PL-15 and Astra, it seems PL-15 has a longer range than Astra. So in real combat, J-11 would fire outside of the Astra range, and disengage after that.

PL-15 looked just about equivalent to ASTRA. If ASTRA can do such a wonderful job with Mig29. I am damn sure J11 will have any chance against Rafale with Meteor. PL-15t on heavy J11 don't think can come close Rafale+Meteor

@@wurfyy in that one instance it might've. Maybe not, but maybe. That's basically what it's for. And he's done an air defense video where he dodged some patriots in a Flanker.
@@W1ckedRcL Using the Cobra there wouldn't have forced the missile to turn much at all. The situation where it might work is one where the missile has to lead the target by a lot, in which case the Cobra dumps all your speed and forces the missile to turn nearly directly towards you. This is exactly what he did in that video you're referencing.

Pl 15 is a significantly longer ranged missile compared to Astra mk1.
A missile can only achieve max performance at optimum conditions....
Missiles don't have their maximum range in all conditions, it depends on launch altitude, launch speed, range of detection and lock against target, etc
Mig29s of IAF are armed with ECM, that may have some adverse effects on J11's radar's targeting abilities, as it's not an AESA, but a mech scan perhaps?
Whatever you say, at any moment in the fighter both fighters were at pretty similar positions and at similar ranges and altitude, pl 15 is better than astra mk1.
I hope Iaf gets Mk2 and mk3 faster, as russia and europe already have them.
A lot of Indian fighters carry a dedicated Israeli EL/M 8222 WB jamming pod which is more than enough to spoof Chinese junk like PL 15. As for Astra Mk1, it's a qualitatively better round than PL 15.

The Prime Ministers of 🇬🇧🇮🇹🇯🇵 have announced a new coalition to deliver the next generation of combat air fighter jets.
Encase you were wondering why they are all looking at your old videos.
Sort of tore then apart with their idea of a 6th gen, focused around the no pilot aspect.
Maybe they will hire you as a consultant, i doubt there are many with your combat experience in 5th gen fighters against such an array for aircraft.
I feel like the the PL-15 is poorly modelled and misrepresented here. It should be no worse than the performance of the metero missile with a max range ≥ 200km, much much better than the Astra. Also the Mig-29 survived several times because it was able to notch (not even 90 degrees) the missile, which in reality is almost impossible to achieve. But it's still a brilliant video for BVR educational purposes.

Probably imported Flankers, though I suspect the J-11s and other domestically manufactured Flankers have Chinese labels.

Hi there thanks, the term flanker is the NATO designation for the Su-27. Like the Mig29 is the Fulcrum, or the Su-57 is the Felon. Every aircraft has a "name" flanker is the name of the Su-27.
@@GrowlingSidewinder What is interesting is that only hardware that is considered to be from "enemies of NATO" gets a designation. I mean I've never found a NATO member state's hardware getting called anything other than what its real name is. And in cases of NATO-friendly nations like India and Japan, I don't think our stuff even gets a NATO designation at all. Never heard a NATO designation for Tejas, for example.
That one PL-15 probably did get notched. Remember, it doesn't need to be 90deg to the missile's flight path, it needs to be 90deg to the radar, which is at an angle to the flight path. A missile flying only slightly faster than your aircraft would be flying almost parallel to you as you notch it.

Well don't know about Chinese one but mig 29 is going to be replaced by India. It's not good enough.
MiG-29 is here to stay for at least 15 more years. It will eventually be replaced by HAL AMCA, but that is a good 15 years away, I hope.
@@bulthaosen1169 I was talking about the MiG-29 UPG not the MiG-29K because what was shown in this video is a J-11 vs MiG-29, not a J-15 vs MiG-29. MiG-29UPG is going to be replaced by AMCA only.

I agree that MiG-29K is horrible and does need quick replacement but its replacement, the TEDBF, is unlikely to enter service for the next 10 years. The Rafale M vs F/A-18E (not F-14) competition is for airwing of INS Vikrant. They won't be replacing the MiG-29K as can be seen by Indian Navy reducing order size from 57 jets down to 26 for the Rafale M / F/A-18E competition.

GS, these conflicts b/w India and China are going to happen over the Himalayas. So the result of such conflicts will be decided by the aircraft's performance over the Himalayas. And the Indian Air Force's Mig-29s are one of the best performing aircraft in those surroundings even better than rafale and Su-30mki (Acc to IAF's data)....don't know about chinese flanker's performance over the Himalayas.

That's how I understand it, the MAR is the closest distance you can get from the opponent without entering the NEZ of his missiles.
When talking about the area I would use the NEZ and use the MAR about the range/distance.
Don't break the MAR or you'll find yourself in the NEZ :)

I always enjoy the matchups you put together on your channel. Some time ago you featured a T-45 in a mock dogfight scenario. I was wondering if you'd ever consider pitting The T-45 against an A-4. I was wondering how the Goshawk (or BAE Hawk) would do against the Skyhawk. Just a thought if you're looking for matchup ideas.

I think it would be similar to mirage vs f16 fights. Basically heavily dependent on the pilots that fly it.
