- My prototype version of a pedal camper. A virtual mini RV with all the comforts of home. This 95 pound enclosed velomobile protects the occupant from outside elements, has a cushy bed, kitchen, shower and commode area, several work tables and solar power for charging phone, lights, horn and cooling fan.
My Ebook showing concept drawings on human powered vehicles includes this idea conceived back in 1992. You can purchase the book on my website at: www.ElkinsDIY.com - Развлечения
I have been watching your videos since I was 12 and my grandfather found your coroplast boat. We built that together and I've been following your ideas ever since! I love the idea of a nomad pedal camper. That one guy with the sheep has a design that I was thinking of making. I love watching your videos, they have influenced my way of thinking when it comes to all of my projects and ideas.
Totally know where your coming from guy's like him give you some great ideas I love making stuff I quite resentle made an ebike and am now thinking of making a little camper for it so really glad I found this channel I also like that channel 123homefree with the sheep 👍✌
@@ryantoast6035 man I'm so glad you just said about a wheelchair wheels I was in the woods near my house doing a bit of slingshot hunting and dog walking and I seen a old wheelchair that someone had dumped and I didn't give the wheels off it a thought nice one man but yes a Facebook group for nomad diy campers would be great for new ideas well just like now one quick chat with you and you sorted my wheel problem also don't know about you but I love being on the ebike 👍✌
@ebike outdoors I figured why not make a group myself. I made one called "pedal powered campers DIY" hopefully a little community will grow from it.
@@ryantoast6035 nice one man I don't have a Facebook account but I will make a Facebook account and join the group if that's OK with you 👍✌
I have mini horses and when I first started out driving, I was in a pinch for a driving vehicle so I made my own from my dads old wheel chair, I bolted rails and a front with a wheel in front to take weight off and it worked quite well tell I could afford a proper buggy. Also made a steel none electric horse walker for horses out of necessity.
For Elkins fans like myself, seeing this video in my RUclips feed is like waking up on Christmas morning when I was 8. Thank you for another chapter, Paul!
It was a cool surprise
Well said
Gullwing coroplast door...this is an example of why Paul is the G.O.A.T. of affordable mind-blowing fun diy projects. A treasure 🪙
I wish I could have had a square door. On another Quad camper design I have it square. Not sure if I'll soon follow thru on that idea. Summer house chores and all...
At first I wanted a tadpole trike.
Now after being a pedicab driver, that delta design has proven to be superior.
Combine that with your ingenuity, and that's simply amazing!
😂❤’d the video and idea Paul. Be great for houseless people, keep them warm, dry and mobile to park up anywhere for the night
....If there were a legal place to park
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! I remember bein' 12 years old, and comin' up with ideas for an all-in-one pedal camper... some around bike hardware, some were pedal-powered boats, and some were pedal powered airplanes... that was about 43-44 years ago, but I still think about all them ideas - it's great to see someone of a like-minded sense of tinkering and adventure! Hell, it seems we even draw similarly! LOL Been watchin' your vid's for years, Paul - keep up the Good Work! 🙂 👍
Yet another great piece of Edkins ingenuity. People ask me why I only bother to watch youtube nowadays, well, its to look and learn, and then go build it.
Keep up the great work.
David in the UK.
You make me want to do projects. I actually have a few ideas for my retirement, which is coming up in a couple of years. Thanks for those videos and for your humour Paul.
Dont wait till your retirement. Start now❤
Thank you Paul, I loved your concept to minimize and dual purpose.
Know that the Light of your being is a blessing to everyone on your journey. Shine on
I've been working on something similar myself, albeit with noticeably less fabricating expertise. Came up with the idea in a similar way, too - saw bikepackers and figured you could have a more-comfortable-to-pedal recumbent trike that doubles as your shelter & cargo carrying and keeps you out of rough weather while pedaling. Add a street-legal motor and solar and you're on your way to limitless, cheap, and comfortable adventure!
I have been thinking and dreaming of building something like this for quite some time. Once I get some chores out of the way, I plan to make it my focus. I am grateful to see your prototype, it is tremendously helpful to see proof of concept in action, not too mention it is an inspiration for my own motivations. Thank you, sir.
You put so much effort in. I love your tow along campers most as you can still use the bike when camper parked. Especially like the camouflaged one. Thanks for posting your interesting projects
These videos are great Paul, I like your style of 'chill design'. Practical too.
Haha the ending. I love the lightness of your design and the way many aspects of it have multiple functions. Would love to see it in the rain since that was part of your inspiration.
I do some minor tinkering and love the concept. Two comments/suggestions.
You mentioned openable windows. On a hot day, the front window would be nice to open. Suggest the flip forward, top hinge window system like on the old 21 window safari VW bus. Lets some air in while still deflecting air up and over the rig. A piano hinge, latch, and some gasketing would be pretty easy to let air in and seal up when closed.
Velomobiles are pretty stable, but in the rare chance it did role over on its right side, getting out through the front opening could be a challenge, depending on the condition of the rider. With the gull wing door, the rider would be trapped in the rig unless you break your way out and damage the rig. Suggest having removable pins in the door hinges. Pop the pins and push up to lift the bike back onto its wheels to exit.
Hi Paul,
I first discovered you about 10-12 years ago. At the time my children had outgrown their trailer. The standard kind you find on eBay which converts into a stroller.
So I knew I couldn't afford the big Dutch cargo bikes at £2000-5000.
I scoured the internet and initially found American Speedster. I used their principle of taking PVC tubing reinforced with dowel or aluminium poles.
I sketched and constructed a frame which I bolted to the chassis saved from the first trailer.
I made a bench seat complete with 3 point belts and left a space at the bag to store bags, coats or shopping.
I then wrapped the frame with a tarp until I was happy with the shape.
From there I worked out the roof, back, front and side panels which I made from tent fabric.
I bought plastic for the windows complete with zips.
I then began the final process of hand stitching it all together.
I even used 1cm square wooden beading to reinforce the seems of the canopy and also glued the seems to make them water tight.
In the end I was really satisfied with the outcome and people at my children's school would ask me about it.
During the process I also studied your methods and ever since I've wanted to create a trailer using coroplast or correx.
When my children became older I kept the trailer for my gardening business.
I've made several since. The latest of which is a converted car roof box.
I now have an electric bike called an Eskuta. It's a great vehicle!
Anyway. Sorry for the long message. I just wanted to thank you for being such an inspiration.
You seem like a really great guy too.
I do wonder how you would get on if you were 6ft 6 tall and over 200lbs though! 😂
You never cease to inspire me, Paul!
Another fantastic creation! Maybe throw a hull under it and make it have boating features. LoL 😂 Thanks for sharing!
The bike at 1:43 is designed for water. (Guy in yellow shirt) It’s actually a great idea. In the US on navigable rivers, you’re allowed to sleep on the water. Just find a safe spot to anchor.
@@tybrady4598 Yes and make sure you aren’t in gator territory lol 😂 The gators and mosquitos will make short work of you.
@@tybrady4598 Plus a long enough rope! Water levels change pretty dramatically sometimes. 😉
You've done it again Paul! A hit, right out of the ballpark! BTW, they make 100 watt flexible solar panels, narrow enough to put on that front slope surface, up by the windshield.
An electric assist version of this and you'll have a great saleable product. If you wanted to take it there there is a market for such vehicles and it's growing rapidly at this time. Good job man!
you could approach a company like Specialized, Cannondale or Rocky Mountain, those guys have lots of R&D dollars and can do things with frames using carbon fibre composites that the smaller companies can not do. Of all the e-bikes i've seen i like the Rocky Mountain higher end mountain bikes the best.
Your builds always make me smile Paul!
Thanks Paul, really good to see you're work. Something about creating small spaces makes everything seem very homely. Very cosy, as you might say in England. Cheers!
I like that little home on wheels. For an use on tours and short trips youd propably need curtains and more room for storage.
It is fun to watch your video and you are a very creative guy, thanks for sharing and craft on!
Impressive as always. Very well thought out.
The logical way forward for your projects, well done. Me being a practical person, wanting to use a bike-camper also for long-distance travel, I would always prefer a towable bike-camper. Simply because I would want to still be able in remote areas, to take the bike alone for short explorations and for getting supplies, but not carry the whole weight of the camper for in such cases also steep or not-so-easy going paths.
From my experience as Rucksack-traveller when young, about twenty kgs of supplies in the backpack provides for living of about ten days. The lightest bike camper about twenty kgs, up to thirty with solarpower. So not really that much more as if build as whole, but much more independence for real travelling.
Best wishes.
Hi; somewhat inventive, myself, and had a friend who made accessories for horse and mule packing, "camperized" my GMC van for 8 weeks, 18,000 km trip, so it's interesting to watch the thinking process for Mr. Elkins! Of course, it leads me to "improved" ideas, but that's what it's about... Nice video, lots of good ideas!
Thank you for more brain food. I was a "prototyper" in the Skagit area for some years. Now retired but the ideas have not stopped. Your use of the plastic signboard material has inspired many ideas for me. Thanks again
It's like a poor man's T-Ford! Great build, loved the video, thanks a lot Paul.
I love the way you calculate and formulate a plan for your project. Meticulously done and inexpensive. Anybody can afford to build them.
Hahaha I love it! And the care and precision you put into your work is amazing! Wind drag = weight, so weighing your camper is only useful structurally. Coming from someone who's only mode of transportation is a bicycle, wind resistance can deplete all of your energy instantly. Just having your jacket unzipped catching the wind, really adds to your invisible hauling weight.
Awesome bike. I look forward to building one myself. Thanks for making this, it was great to see.
I love your design specially all the use of coroplast and plexiglass! Easier to find and less expensive than the next space shuttle material out there lol. Quite the simple and effective design making it an option for anyone motivated enough to learn and create one. The minimalist approach is very refreshing to watch thank you 😊
Regarding the storage below the steering, I think it would be safer to have some kind of flap/s or insert to keep items from getting jumbled by a bump or incident and interfering with the mechanism
Incredible work, insightful ideas and extreme multi functionality.
Always inspiring to see your creativity and ingenuity come together into a reality.
We are eternally grateful for your expressions of obsessions. :)
Thank you! Nice to be appriciated!
this idea of a mobile home on wheels and designs have haunted my mind mind for so long im glad to see ii am not alone and that you make such amazing things
Always love your ideas, inventions and can do attitude. Good to see you're still at it Paul! Thank you!
Been watching these since I was a kid. Literally filled up with joy seeing there was a new video
You're just a kid who likes to make his toys .. your happiness is contagious!
I'm always so impressed with your builds, Paul. Thank you for your being, and your visit last year. Still geeked about meeting you.
I appreciate the amount of work and thought thats gone into this project and documenting it so well. A wise man once said that anybody can make something bigger and more expensive but smaller and lower cost is genius! I think youve nailed it with this one and look forward in anticipation at how many will tweak your prototype to suit their needs. thanks for sharing ..cheers buddy.
It is so cool that you will take the time to build these things and share them with people and encourage them to iterate on it and make it their own. It is so refreshing to see this in a world where it feels like everybody is trying to cash in on everything all the time
Wow, Paul, so good to see you again! Been watching you forever and your use of coroplast has inspired a number of home & garden items that I loved making and still love pulling out in Spring and using. Good to see you're looking well and still creating. Much love.
One of these or something like it would be a dream on Europe's bike roads. Protected from the rain, everything under one roof. An inexpensive way to tour. Healthy. In Europe these alternate vehicles would be admired. Here they are mostly run over.
As far as this video goes, I love where you're going with this! I love velomoviles and I've always thought it'd be awesome as a self contained camper. I haven't finished this video yet but I've always thought some kind of pedal powered generator incorporated into it. Maybe one of the ones you can DIY from a car alternator? 🤷🏾♂️ idk though, I'm no builder or engineer.
Thanks for sharing your intelligence, ingenuity and skills with us.Great idea !!!
Thank you for your Great Ideas! And I love that you prepared for everything. I’m twitching to go to Home Depot for coroboard but you are amazing❤
Brilliant mister glad to see you hard at it with your brilliant ideas! Buy the book yous guys!!
Looks like a bicycle submarine, looks great Paul!
it's not the most beautiful but the most successful of your projects, experience speaks for itself. a convertible model would be the best 😁 bravo!
Indeed. A canvas cover like a jeep top would have worked, but then I wouldn't have the hatch door...
Paul you are so cool, a great combination of vision and ability. 👍🏻👍🏻
Love all your inventions. I like the captain boat, plywood, the best. Thanks for a fun great video Paul. Love your humor @ the end.
Well done once again Paul!
Dear Paul I’ve watched your videos since I was 8 I’m 17 know and I’m glad to see you still making videos you’re a big inspiration to me when it comes to being creative so thank you for the videos keep making them and I hope you have a great life
A well designed vehicle and a great video production. Thanks Paul. You’ve got me thinking.
Love it!! Love the ingenuity and how well thought out all those multi purpose gadgets and trinkets are! Fun project!
Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden
I was literally just talking with my sister about doing something like this! Of course this man comes in with the inspiration
Start with an ebike, add solar… ❤❤❤
Great little camper. I would like to see you pedal around in some wind and rain. A real road test. It would be a simple affair to convert to a battery powered drive for those long hill climbs.
I’ve been watching your stuff ever since the Kirsten Dirksen video. I actually made one of the Coro kayaks. This is one of the coolest builds yet
Thanks Stephen. It does make one wonder, especially a cross country tourer.
@@paulwelkinsdiy I actually live near one of the cross country routes so i pass people on bikes all the time. This would be perfect for them
Also if you haven’t seen Harry Dwyer video on his bicycle rv it’s something to check out
That was a great ending Paul.
Getting the most out a limit of money's energy and space.
Smooth landing at the end! You have some great ideas, and I'm thinking about something similar. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Really very wonderful thank you! I had my first go in a velo the other day. And this seems like an excellent dirrection to take velos in.
This video is the best discovery I've made in years, and i don't even own a bike. Well done - now off to check out your other videos. 😊
best ending shot EVER!
and I love your works! THX for keep inspiring me!
Thanks for being you and for sharing your ideas.
Awesome! Nice work. 🙂
For over 2 years, I have lived full time in my pop-top micro-camper that I designed myself. It's a solid pop-top, so there's no soft areas once the top goes up. With the top up, I can stand inside.
Been following you for years, you're a very clever man, respect to you and best wishes from the UK.
Thank you! I appreciate that.
This is very clever! Love it.
I love the campers and the bikes, this is genial Paul!, greetings from Córdoba Argentina
Somebody else from Córdoba, cheers!!!
Neat and innovative, as always! Thanks for sharing!
What a cool idea
Thanks for sharing your adventure
detachable steering system that goes top side to reclaim the lower storage space. A clip for your headlights to go on that umbrella pole and on the door lip would be neat too
Such a great video! Definitely looking forward to creating a version of my own.
Hi Paul love the channel, watching from australia :) I use the same solar panel for charging phone - brilliant!!!!
Fabulous, really enjoy your videos. Andy UK
That’s awesome! Neat ideas!
Great idea man I'm thinking of making a little camper to pull along with my homemade ebike so really glad I found your channel thanks man this really helps 🚵🚙✌
Very cool build turned out great bro
Really cool build man.
This is the type of ride I wanted as a kid, an upgrade to my bike which would get me out of the rain. This is far better, I would love to make this today!
Awesome ideas in motion!
Hey Paul I'm trying to start a cross country e-bike custom rig building. I love the ideas. You inspire me to dream bigger, thank you.
Great build! Thanks for sharing.
as always i love your videos paul! keep up the great work
Another amazing project thank you!!!
Great video! Great invention!
Beautiful View !!!
Hi Paul, I had an idea the other day you might like to experiment with: A recumbent bike is a very similar shape to a hammock. It would be cool to design a recumbent with add ons that turn the bike into a hammock frame and tarp shelter. It would save a lot of weight. hoping you take this idea and see what you can come up with.
That was fun to watch ..great job! :)
Just love your work! Thank you
nice build Paul
Your neighbors must get a real kick out of your inventions. What’s Paul going to come up with next? I just love your ideas. It keeps me building.
the speedometer is a great touch! thank you
Fantastic effort 👍 inspirational stuff.
Very Cool Paul!
What a wonderful contraption! I would definitely need some sort of power assistance with the steep hills around where I live. Wouldn't that fan fit nicely into one of the portholes? I would love a boat version, too 🙂
Paul Elkins is one of the OG's of this kind of content.
Your an absolutely amazing human being...
Man, i really like of the idea of a "pedalhome" or somenthing like that. Searching for this at the past, i found just bicicly trailers. So, your idea is the nearist thing that i found of my idea.
