Flying a drone into the Lake Berryessa spillway

Lake Berryessa's spillway is active for the first time in 10 years, thanks to a very wet winter in California.
Flying the drone down into the spillway entrance was interesting: the air rushing down the hole started to pull the drone down but it was easy enough to climb out. Fortunately, the day didn't end with Mavic being spat out the other side of the dam wall! - Авто/Мото
That freaks me out for some reason.

I tried to see this video through one of those "turn a one page article into a 45 page advert" websites that was making it seem like it was a complete mystery why the hole was there, and I'm not at all surprised that it's an actual function of the dam.
Really? What was the website? I don't care that it ended up on another site - because of the song I used, I can't make any money out of this video anyway - but I'm curious.
@@dingoboy Oh your video wasn't on there, or at least I don't know because it was probably on the last page and I just gave up getting there, I just saw countless pictures of the hole and paragraphs all ending in different wordings of "Where is this hole leading to? Click NEXT to find out!". I "clicked NEXT" like 22 times, no joke, and never reached a conclusion. It did make me read through the history of water dams, how drones work, how to fix them, etc.
Yep, So Did I, Twice In Fact, But My Phone Always Froze Before I Could Get The Info. Tonight, Someone On Facebook Directed Me To This Video. I Now Understand Everything Without Getting Trapped On One Of Those Ads Traps.
@@dingoboy I found this video after seeing a similar/same slideshow on a website called icepop. Thanks for the video!
Marcus Polus yep. every time you click next it’s counts as a click/view for there site. they’re just scavenging for money. i usually read the first page and get all the information then just look up the video or another article that’s actually useful.
I'm a local from this lake. We all call this the "Glory Hole" it is the over flow for the dam when full. It empty's through the bottom of the dam, it's called the "Shower Head". Super nice lake before they closed all the camp sites and removed all the trailer sites.

Yea can't imagine it's too safe to have kids and pets around a giant portal to Atlantis
Need to put a water proof tracking device in the spill hole and see were it go's.
It goes to the bottom of the dam wall. It's just an overflow pipe. Search youtube for Techrax...
Yes but I’m sure it would break by then and you never been to find it
It's known where it goes. You can see on the Video where the water exit's below the dam. The tunnel itself can be accessed on foot from below and is covered with graffiti for that reason.
It looks like some kind of crazy portal !
Great video, I live in the area and have been to berryessa and putah creek many many times. Most people don't realize that the glory hole exits the dam below, you can't see it from the road side. Back in the 70s we would hike up the creek and into the tube all the way up to the 90* turn and look straight up from under the dam pretty cool but obviously off limits these days.
ravaginggoatman did it look like one could survive if they were to get sucked in while the drain was open?
@@jlafaele3908 nope.i doubt you can survive that.
Hamo_Cyde
You would be dead in 10 seconds
Lol.. I rather fight on a Trench warfare rather than get killed on that glory hole
@@jlafaele3908 you would either drown or get smacked around by the force of the water
To anyone that believes that you could jump in to this and emerge unscathed this is what would really happen.
You would slam into the concrete at the bottom of the 200ft drop which is like jumping of a 4 story building straight into concrete head first. If that didn’t kill you water pressure would hundreds of thousands gallons of water pour down that spillway every second and if you somehow survive that there is a hydraulic or recirculating current that would pull you under and hold you under water until you were pulled out. There is no chance of surviving one of these
Miles Rand don’t worry 200ft is wat more than 4 stories
A A
But it still gets the point across.
Miles Rand Yes
Who tf would jump into that shit ? 😂 even a psychopath wouldn't do that
@@Persianking1997but unfortunately a woman died on 1997 while swimming onto that
What a beautiful scenery.
I first noticed things like this at one of the rafting rides at the great escape. It was really small. Only a few feet in diameter.
Very cool video. Thanks for posting and have a nice day too.
Knowing that'd be the last thing you'd see if you fell in is really unsettling.
The hole freaks me xd
This is the video I was looking for
Remember that someone died in there in 1997
1:01 I wonder why just that one side is uneven on the spillway lip. Did they design a slightly lower slide of sorts on one side to let a trickle get over even if the water isn't high enough to go over the full lip yet? That would allow a little more water flow on top of the regular water going over, which may be why it sticks out with a little more water and force than the rest of it.
It's not uneven. I live here and seen the water low over a few times.
The ultimate water slide! You go first bud. I’ll go over here and get a picture when you come out.
Marvellous engineering and Ingenuity
Nice flying!
Hello sir!May I use a small part of your video into a short film I'm planning to make?
Visited there today and now the shot at 1:14 feels so satisfying for me 😁
😀
(Not that I’d imagine it’s allowed or happens) but if you were free swimming and then the dam opened that drain a few hundred yards from you, I wonder if that current would be escapable
They evacuate the area before they start draining.
Justin , thank you for the common sense I lacked lolol.
Jesse Wilson Didn't read your entire comment. My bad. Some woman died in the 1990s because she got sucked into it from a rip tide going into the drain. If you got caught in the current near the drain, it'd be 100% unescapable. If you're a few hundred yards out, you should be fine-unless you were are a really small/weak person.
@@shchorss However, this is not a gated spillway. Operators can't start and stop it on command - instead, as the water level rises, it at first trickles over, then the flow gets stronger with further rise. Unless someone teleported a huge amount of water into a lake, it's not gonna suddenly start flowing at full speed.
hell yeah it would be
Fun to raft or free swim

fUCK THAT
Me and my 4 kids wants to see the hole up close so we're planning a trip to canoe close to the hole.I can't wait so much fun

This is one of my multiple phobias.
That I’m going to call into a huge hole like this and die
Airport toilets when you lean 0.0001 inches forward:
I always wondered, what happens if you fall down the hole?
SO DID I!
Its a 60feet deep hole and you probably die by falling down and the pressure of the waters. Than you will travel about 100meters far to a hole releasing the water. Your body probs look like a pancake. (p.s sorry for my bad english)
Its a drain that leads to the bottom to a nother opening it was all n the video ppl
Expected more.. but the vacuum around that hole prevents it too close your drone is gone in an instant
any chance of survival in there ?
Dvo rak nah
Karl Andreas Lina have you tried ?
zero. think about it. where all that water comes out is all the way on the other side of the lake. youd be dead and drowned by the time you could even get spit out.. if you get spit out.
No.
You wouldn't drown but that's a 60 feet drop on concrete that will probably kill you.
If that doesen't kill you then you're probably unconscious and will drown in the river.
Back in the 90s a women fell down and died.
Nope. You'd die from some crazy event horizon shit in there.
I'm so curious to see what's down there
Look up Glory Hole Lake Berryessa, Ca. Plenty of videos of people skating in the horizontal portion of the spillway, when the lake is low and no water flows down it.
It's just a long pipe that shots out the other end at the bottom
Nice video
Nice I was there just a few days ago.
The Mario warp pipe they don't want you to know about
Buenísimo las imágenes
assuming the water goes down and out through the other exit next to the dam
Yes.
Go in it's just a fun ride
How does the lake stay full enough at all times? Why doesn’t it completely drain the lake? Where does the extra water to keep it level come from? If at any point you get in the lake will you eventually be drawn into the hole? So do they have precautions to make sure no one can accidentally fall in!? - gonna go and yt someone jumping in the lake
the lake levels out as the glory hole stops overflow when lake fills up..
Think of it as an elevated drain hole. It isn’t at the bottom of the lake.
Makes me think of the start of Dr Who.
cool stuff that gives anxiety
Can you kayak into this hole?
Imagine if they shut off the spill way the second the drone got in😂
Calix Lor what would happen?
Tide Pods the drone would’ve got destroyed because when they shut off the spill way water fills the hole
spillways are meant to lower water level.. there wouldn’t be water over it
You can't shut off a spillway dingus.
MrErichonda30 some spillways can be shut off such as gate and siphon spillways
How deep is that hole
If somehow your boat got sucked down would you survive and we’re does it lead too?
1) There are no boats allowed on Lake Berryessa.
2) No, you wouldn't, the water would crush both you and your boat within minutes.
3) It leads down to the bottom of the dam, there's an exit hole there.
@@SHEAV_PALPAMEME Boats are allowed on Lake Berryessa, this spot near the dam and spillway is roped off.
@@nicholascrespo9003 Right, my apologies. Still, though, no boats around the spillway.
@@SHEAV_PALPAMEME No worries my friend, hope I didn't come across as condescending.
@Bookafrmlildurksbed Only one person is documented as going over the edge of the spillway, Emily Schwalen in 1997. She, sadly, died from it.
That is crazy.
Is it true that a man actually fell down it I heard about it before
Dayum, I thought it was gonna be flown in and then let get swallowed up. Well was just hoping that would happen.
For those who are interested - Techrax made a video where he dropped an iPhone down the hole with a super-strong case
I'm Interested, how do I see the film, free? Lol

I was watching the video and that’s exactly what I said and I went to comment it and this was at the top 🗿
A girl name Emily Schwalen swim to the spill way and got sucked up by it and died.
Wow in 4 years and now we are down 30 % compacity we need mother nature now before there's no more water in these reservoir and dams to spill out to rivers to support our water supply.
The water colour reminds me of my morning juice
Does that look like its going *into* the hole?
At 1:15, it's below the level of the dam surface; it's in the outlet.
Best hole ever
The water looks like pea soup!

ahh look at this crystal clear blue water
hmmm now if this was at the bottom of the ocean this would be generating some real deal holyfield electricity o.O

Why is the water that color
why did that put that so close the road.
convenience for the construction equipment when the dam was built i guess.

Imagine falling down
Were does the water go???
0:31 that is the output of the hole
Would that be survivable if you went through it?
People have survived falling down Niagara falls so probably
no. its a 93 meter drop to the bottom of the dam
No. It's a 60 foot drop onto a pad of concrete, combined with the pressure of water being thrusted onto top of you. If you don't die from the fall, you'll be unconscious and then drown.
Are you sure it hits a pad and doesn't smoothly transition horizontally?
Per wikipedia, "In 1997, Emily Schwalen of Davis died after being caught in the current while swimming near the Glory Hole and being swept down the pipe after holding on to the rim for about 20 minutes."
