Alaska-Yukon Moose Dream Hunt

- Many moose hunting books, articles and posts describe a beast that is nearly 8-feet tall at the hump, weighs almost 2,000lbs, and carries not one... but two sheets of plywood on his head and usually these stories come chock full of photos that support such claims.
We did not come away with such a photo of a moose on my recent Alaska Yukon moose hunt... however, I did pass on an absolute hammer of a bull on the second to last day. Why did I pass... you ask? Because when he and I were 15-yards apart… we couldn’t see one another and we both found ourselves in a spot where only large bears go. When I finally did see him, it was at 300 yards and he was moving away... which just isn’t my jam to take a shot. It’s just fine, though, he looked like he wanted to continue on being a moose anyway.
Many hunters have an “Alaska-Yukon Moose” listed as their “dream animal” to hunt…and with good reason. It’s as big an adventure as you’ll find. BUT (there’s always a “but”), know that not every second of your dreamy adventure is going to go perfectly, in fact much of it won’t go perfectly at all. The real celebration of being dropped off in the bush (especially this go around) for me, is wilderness problem solving. And with that sentiment, here are some take-aways from my recent moose hunt in Alaska in case you ever find yourself up that way:
There will be plenty of rain (I sat through 11 straight days of it)... so when you get to finally see the moon, snap a photo. Oh, and bring the best rain gear you can afford.
You’ll call a lot, most often it will be to yourself... but then one day...
Cherish your meals. They’re special. Every single one of them. Take this time to get to know your hunter partner, or yourself, even better.
Bring the best weapon you can get your hands on, but do not skimp on glass (I recommend anything and everything from @mavenbuilt)... because even though moose are big... Alaska is so much bigger.
The right gear and the right attitude can make anything possible.
One thing’s for sure. I live for this stuff. Now, who is coming with me next year?

Dude you shouldn’t be hunting with that bear incident. After you missed you just carelessly shot an arrow not knowing where it would hit and still missed lmao.
