+ehy Lol that's super funny coming from an American, whose laws are heavily influenced by Christians trying to pass their religious values as 'laws'. Oh, you're a cute one :D
I was going to vote for Bernie, but honestly I've changed my mind and would rather vote for Hillary after watching the PBS debate last night. I don't think Bernie would be able to accomplish what he's planning on getting done (reforming all of Wall Street? Raising taxes? Making public colleges tuition free? Being a pacifist?), but Hillary actually knows what she's talking about and has experience and a proven record to accomplish things. I don't care if Hillary is supported by a SuperPAC, because most politicians are anyway and honestly it won't change just because Bernie Sanders said so. Hundreds of years of our capitalistic democracy cannot change in 4 years of having Bernie in office. I'm 18 and I'm disappointed in most kids my age who are voting for Bernie purely for his "anti-Wall Street" and "anti SuperPAC" rants. He's not nearly as accomplished as Clinton is, end of story.
Bernie has passed way more bills that have turned into law than Clinton: pplswar.wordpress.com/2015/10/21/fact-bernie-sanders-got-more-done-in-the-senate-than-hillary-clinton/ www.alternet.org/election-2016/bernie-gets-it-done-sanders-record-pushing-through-major-reforms-will-surprise-you Hundreds of years of capitalism won't change with Bernie that's for sure and it's not his plan to turn America into a socialist state. He's called a socialist because he wants more opportunity for the middle class via access to healthcare and college. Hilary simply doesn't care about the middle class as much as Bernie.
When Trump becomes president I promise you that I will constantly remind him of how you badmouthed him during his run. In other words, Vice News, your days are numbered.
+James Love lol, you've got to be delusional. The wall will slow the flow of ordinary immigrants but there is no damn way it's stopping the drugs... The Cartels and their American business partners run a 50+ billion dollar illegal drug industry. Not to mention, Americans are obsessed with drugs (have you seen pop culture today?) They will get through any wall to make that money. This will only make drugs more expensive and a more dangerous business to be in.
That's what I'm saying. The wall will not stop drugs from entering the U.S. They already dig tunnels to transport drugs, wall's not stopping that. And they already use American citizens who work in Mexico to transport them in their cars, wall's not stopping that either. And no matter how much border the patrol seizes, at least 10 times more will make it through. As I said, this will only make it a more lucrative and dangerous business to get into. When the Reagan tightened security across the border with his "War in Drugs", cartels and gangs became much more brutal, and so much richer... learn from history. The only way to reduce drug consumption is education and rehabilitation.
TNT is cheap, one stick and a tunnel is done. Rehabilitation has a high failure rate. Education is done already, they been doing it in school for a freaking long time. Build a wall.
Trump is a moderate and he is trying to galvanize conservative votes. So he cannot push his more liberal ideas right now. Trump is very good at playing the political game. I love Trump's use of language, he uses reinforcement, positive language, and he speaks at a 4th grade level... probably a skill cultivated from doing business with translators, English second language speakers, and folks without college degrees.
Mr. Moynihan, aren't you forgetting the critical role that superdelegates (and their ability to switch allegiances if they so choose) played in 2008? The 2016 Democratic primary is becoming eerily reminiscent of 2008, when it looked like Hillary had locked up the superdelegates very early, only to discover that once the tide turned against Hillary, her "locked-up" superdelegates started jumping ship en masse. And the late-stage defection of so many superdelegates from Hillary to Barack ended up as THE determining factor in Obama's victory, even trumping the number of popularly elected delegates that Hillary had won over the course of the primary season. So yes, superdelegates are anti-democratic, but they are anti-democratic by design, implemented to counteract the sometimes unpredictable and self-destructive nature of direct democracy, which the Democrats experienced in 1972 and the Republicans are experiencing right now. Personally, when I weigh the benefits of superdelegates (preventing Trump-like demagogues from becoming the Democratic nomination) versus the potential costs (slight possibility of anti-democratic effect if superdelegates choose loyalty rather than switch allegiances to the eventual nominee), I come down in favor of superdelegates every single time.
Well if Rand Paul had more money he'd still be in the race and be able to get his message across better through ads. So I see your point of money being not a big factor as incorrect.
This guy explains his views on the campaign very well. Even people who don't agree with him have to admit that, but go ahead, dislike as much as you want.
YOU CANT VOTE IN THE PRIMARIES IF YOUR NOT REGISTERED TO ONE OF THE PARTIES. It has nothing to do with people being lazy, most states don't allow you to vote in primaries unless you are registered for a party. Most people don't want to register for a party. Why do I know more about this then your "expert." Come on Vice News.
You still had to register, which people don't want to do. And I said in "most states," some states have open primaries where everyone can vote. But to just say that people don't vote in the primaries because they're "lazy" is not looking at all the factors. I wish I could vote in the primaries here in Ohio, but I'm not registering for a party.
fudj12 You can register as Indepenant and still vote, idk how it is in Ohio, but in Democrat controlled Massachusetts, im able to register as indepenant without any harassment whatsoever
Ohio is a "closed primary" meaning only people registered for a certain political party can vote for that party's candidate. So if I was to vote for Bernie or Hillary in the primary I have to be a registered Democrat, which sucks. Kudos to Massachusetts for having a "semi-open primary." This brings me back to my original point though that it's unfair for Michael to just write all of us off as "lazy" because some of us can't vote in the primaries without selling out to a party. That's all I was saying. And since he's part of a News network and reporting on these things he should know these restrictions at least exist.
Personally I think that both Sanders and Trump would be unmitigated disasters as presidents. But frankly it's a disaster that has to happen if American politics is going to change for the better in the long term. Trump/Sanders 2016
what an empty conversation. And his neurotic way of talking is kind of irritating. The only thing one needs to know about the elections is that whoever comes next will be thoroughly vetted and accepted, bought and owned by the ruling oligarchy.
Although well spoken, this man taking the questions misses the point of Trump's popularity. 1) The Alt Right is a larger percentage of the population than people think. Americans, mostly white, are tired of losing their identity as americans 2) The push against the regressive left is the same reason people supported Rob Ford. Anything to piss off elitists. The elite have been in power long enough and look at how much worse race-relations are, the economy is, disconnect between politicians and the real world. 3) Self-funding is crucial to appeal 4) Complaints of "populism" make him stronger. Remember, populism and democracy 5) Mischaracterising his position only makes his support stronger
I have a degree in political science, the average person knows little to nothing about politics ask somebody or yourself what the definition of politics even is?
BTW, I hope you're not somehow suggesting that Citizens United isn't a serious problem because big-money donors like the Koch brothers are complaining about how hard it is to control the outcomes of our elections? I mean, am I wrong in recalling that the central issue in Citizens United was, in fact, One Person, One Vote? Are we supposed to feel bad for the Koch brothers because our society cannot guarantee them their preferred rate of return for their outsized investments in hastening our inexorable descent toward plutocracy and oligarchy? And wasn't one of the most devastating consequences of Citizens United how it not only destroyed the promise of One Person, One Vote, it also ended up undermining our faith in the basic fairness of our system?
I think your idea of not getting misinformed people to vote is way too much pro-establishment since the opinion of the people is not important enough. Well, opportunity doesn't supress education. It is way more difficult to get people interested in something they will have to leave their confort zone to do.
Your analysis is absolutely flawed regarding money in politics.... You can't use the presidential primary to comment on the HUGE issue of money in politics. Presidential candidates get a lot of free coverage from the press, through debates, commentary, pundits, etc. Money has much more of an impact in the very *beginning* of a presidential campaign, because the press will not even pay attention to candidates who don't have a certain amount of money raised and those candidates will likely never see a debate. However money has a much bigger impact overall at the state and local level where there is far less free coverage for each candidate. Their was a study done a couple years ago that showed pretty clearly that the candidate with the most money were over 90% more likely to win the election. Furthermore politicians spend more of their time raising money than they do legislating. They literally spend all day on the phone with donors trying to raise money. Are certain donors going to more willing to give money to those candidates who share certain opinions and will those politicians change or alter their opinions based on the likelihood of raising money from those donors? You betcha.... Lastly there is the revolving door where politicians will turn into lobbyist or consultants for the same companies that have funded their campaigns for years. There is a huge conflict of interest when you're working towards a payday at the end of your political career.
