    sounds like an interesting project so far, I wish you luck! horror that gives hints and maintains tension but relies mostly on the viewer's imagination is my FAVORITE kind!
    some assorted advice from a graphic design intern that's marathonned many hours of game design videos but who is otherwise unqualified:
    right now it looks like you may run into the same gameplay problems Slender had if you're not careful, where a huge flat and mostly featureless map aside from a few isolated landmarks that weren't visible from a distance left players frustrated and bored searching for journal pages, rather than tense. Instead, I would recommend keeping your map SMALL and DETAILED with recognizable landmarks that are directional (Like a broken down truck or a long blood trail that gets thicker at one end) rather than ones that look the same from all angles. Paths are also a great way to re-orient lost players. If a player comes across one while wandering, they're very likely to follow it in one direction or another to something potentially interesting. Also, finding an object in the middle of the woods or some other uninteresting location isn't very fun, so you should gift wrap it! Put a key object somewhere interesting that a player would naturally want to take a closer look at, or have the item visibly out of place from its surroundings. like a wrench stuffed into a tree stump that's surrounded by fresh wood chips, like that single tree got completely mulched in the middle of the woods. Treat map-making as an opportunity to tell a story with the environment, or leave unnerving mysteries for players to ponder :)

    Love just finding fellow devs on this platform just starting out. Word of advice, don't get too attached to the first project, it's going to suck, trust me. And that's fine. It's the first after all. Hopefully you stick around bc game devs been a blast for me too! Shame some drop the ball bc their first game was too complicated

      Scope creep has been a scary idea in my head but I more or less have an idea of how I want to end the game! And yes my first is definitely not going to the moon, but I am having a blast making it and game dev is something I really want to continue for many more projects to come! I appreciate the advice! 👍

    As an aspiring game dev who also has a background in CS, this is truly inspiring to see! Welcome to game dev!
    Also, I noticed you call "GetComponent" several times in your code. I recommend storing these as variables in your class instead, not only so you don't have to keep writing it out every line but also to save on runtime, even if a little bit.

    Don't rely on your friends feedback too much. You need to find someone who will not be worried about telling you if you have a bad deal or direction.
    I recommend you add some puzzles to solve in order to collect the items needed.
    Wild animal sounds here and there will help with the atmosphere

    I honestly think the concept of having a solid foundation of stuff implemented before starting devlogs is the way to go. Sadly so many games start with a video of someone starting with the concept and really basic features implemented when they make a video and then they give up, so I like seeing devlogs that start after some real progress is made.
    Feedback:
    - Flashlight idea is awesome and unique, keep moving forward with it and finding ways to expand it. Could be your "core mechanic".
    - I think ambiance maintaining fear and tension is the way to go if you aren't going to focus on a monster and jumpscares. So enhancing that however possible would be my suggestion. Rustling sounds, music, heartbeat increases, falling trees, lights flickering, fires going out, etc anything that gives you the sense of bad things nears or happening without much actually happening is great.
    - I would keep exploring assets, some look really good and some not so much(in my opinion). The grass looks a bit out of place, maybe its a little too.. bright and green? Not sure, just my gut reaction. Maybe the color could be a bit more muted and toned down. Fog and Post Processing may help some too.
    - Keep finding ways to add more detail to the plain areas rather than just a texture. Small rocks, more bushes, flowers, broken down sheds or buildings, barrels, crates, anything to break up monotony. I don't even play the game but I look at Escape From Tarkov as the pinnacle of what Unity Level Design can be achieved.

    Looks Great so far! I have one suggestion for the looks of the game, you could use PBR textures for the terrain to give a lot more detail, also you could use a shader to make the flashlight only reveal text that is being lit up!

    • @TheCaptlesPRO
      @TheCaptlesPRO  2 года назад

      Are there any videos out there about how to create shaders capable of doing that? That sounds like something I could definitely add! Thank you!

    So cool. I love following peoples' journeys through devlogs. They're such an entertaining medium.
    I know you're still fleshing out the story, but please don't add it in as an afterthought to the gameplay. My favorite part of horror games like resident evil is the complex story that links a bunch of seemingly abstract details together behind the scenes.

    • @TheCaptlesPRO
      @TheCaptlesPRO  2 года назад +1

      Yes! RE7 and RE8 are my favorite games! Next devlog is definitely going to show more story concepts! But I do want to keep things on the more secret side.

  • @snailtan4332

    I really like horror games that are more psychological rather than... actual. Like what I mean is, jumpscares are bad and the show dont tell actually might work against you in a horror game.
    Imply stuff that might be there, have "something" lurk between the trees stalking you just out of reach.
    Of course you should have an actual tangible thread, but horror quickly looses its charme if you know how it works.
    Wonderful video btw and dont take my advice is gospel, its afterall only my opinion and not a fact :D
    Subbed, looking forward to the next :)

    As someone who is also a programmer by trade and trying to get into game dev (as a hobby for now), check out I heart video games video, on state machines the concept will help elevate your coding by a lot and also check how to use events and delegates and actions, also will make your life in unity a lot easier and modular, my last advice is to check code monkey's channel, everyone can learn a lot of stuff from there, his code is beautiful, and good luck on your journey man wish you all the best.
