    Wow, to be able to feel a nostalgic sense of loss for a place that didn’t exist 40 years ago! That is rapid development on an insane scale. Those handshake places looked dangerous though to be fair.

      Actually, it's all about money. the govt collect taxes to finance their private construction companies then lease with a bigger property tax to push province GDP to appeal to investors. It's making money 3 ways with one stone. That's why the real estate industry is always the no.1 practical business.

      Preserving those places doesn't make much sense either. Shenzhen was built from the ground up 40 years ago, and those buildings were built cheap and not meant to stay. I can understand the nostalgia, but it's not exactly the Hutongs of Beijing or the lane houses of Shanghai.

Also, these buildings were not well-designed in the respect of tap systems, network, wires and so on. You got the neck, the right balance between music and motion picture! I'd love to see some scenery, drone stuff ... you must have so many hours of material now!
    You could build another documentary out of drone movies alone, just complement a personal mixtape with "CreaticeCommons" music and it would be tremendous! You already proven to be a good judge of ambience ... maybe sort some actual "ambient-music" inbetween, it will be bautifull, trust me :-D

    I'm a native Shenzhener and the true authentic Shenzhen market town was bulldozed in the 1980s already, it used to be where Dongmen pedestrian street stands today. Today's urban villages are not traditional, they were built over the last 40 years. However it is true that the atmosphere of these villages is quite unique and can not be found in newer parts of the city. It is also true that the land they are built on belongs to local people and they are becoming really rich from leasing (not selling) it to real estate developers.

      John Cheresna The regulations are there, so it's matter of enforcement. I know the enforcement is weak in rural areas, but in cities like Shenzhen, what you said is not the case. There were lots of locals in Beijing, or Shanghai, or Shenzhen, who become filthy rich just because they own a house in the urban villages. I know in a village of Guangzhou, another big city. Every household of that village becomes millionaire after what we called 拆迁, sort of like resettlement. If you search about nail houses, you found majority of them are in China.

    • @wisdomleader85
      @wisdomleader85 6 лет назад +3

      Chris Song
      Those "regulations" are made for the government to grab lands and sell them to real estate tycoons with, I'm afraid. If the government really cares about its city, they could make regulations for periodic inspection and maintenance, instead of demolition.

    • @chriss7196
      @chriss7196 6 лет назад +2

      LeckMichImArsch True. But in China it's like this: You wouldn't recognize any Chinese city 10 years or 20 years later. For me, as long as the residents can get enough money before moving out, this seems OK. Cuz this "constantly replacing old with new stuff" mindset is not only held by the gov, but also held by the people, so I am sure most residents there actually support the demolition as long as they get enough compensation to move to better apartments.

    Thanks, Winston. I'm feeling it's a bit of a struggle just living and working in Shenzhen. I feel I'm lacking inspiration. Yet your and C-Milk's videos keep me interested. They make me think again about things I've already become too used to, as well as things I didn't really think about before. I love the montage, which really gives me a feeling of the modern energy of the big city as well as the heart and soul of the urban villages. Wherever I live in Shenzhen, it seems that the urban villages are close by. Great places for a cheap hair cut, handy for practical bits & pieces, and plenty of snacks too. I didn't actually live in one though, so maybe I didn't consider their history, culture, and value enough... Until now! Thanks.

      True, however, China is unique because it has developed so rapidly. Those urban villages sprung up quickly to meet the needs of a vast new population of workers. In a different environment they wouldn’t exist and probably do need to go. It is not like people’s home are constantly being ripped down. People do have rights and believe it or not can even protest in the “right” way.
