Great topic - you were commenting about using press forming for body work, while not exactly the same but (to me!) very closely related tip: I saw an advanced restoration pro save a '67 Shelby GT500 with what I thought was a novel use of press forming, the car had severe impact damage on the driver's rear quarter (normally one would cut off and replace the whole side of teh car) however what the pro chose to do was to order a new rear quarter panel section and then fill it with very hard concrete, to make a concrete form/plug exactly in the positive shape as the OE panel, and he then used that from inside the trunk with porta-power to gently press and work the original sheet metal back into form (along with hammering, shrinking, etc) and was able to preserve the original date-coded sheet metal of the car to avoid devaluing it. Love your work, look forward to every video! - Steve.

Last night ( the same day this video was uploaded) while using a grinder with a cut disk, it exploded and hit me in the stomach. Lucky it only just broke the skin, but if it had of been a larger piece it could have done some real damage. I've used them for years and exploded lots of them but this is the first one that scared me into installing the guard. Be very aware if using a grinder without the guard. Love watching all your videos, you have a great style of teaching, keep them coming.
Awesome man- thanks so much for the video. This is the first i've seen and love your style. Also like using tools others may have available for inspiration. Thanks so much!
loved this information and thanks for being that kid like wondeent needed to play in different styles, keep that mindset looking forward to your next what if thought process
Back in the 1970's I made an explosive forming chamber for a school project. It operated similarly to your system except that it only needed a female die. The male side was a chamber filled with water (incompressible) that used a 20-ga blank shotgun shell to press sheet aluminum into the female die. My components were heavy, in part so their inertia would help reduce movement under high dynamic pressure. It worked very well for my first try. If you put a coin on the top of the die, its exact mirror impression appeared in the sheet metal part produced - you could see all details of the image and read all the numbers. There are many ways to get there from here, and some of them give you an excuse to sound the klaxon and yell "Fire in the hole!"
@@MakeItKustom - I've also seen people use pressure washers to inflate a sheet metal vessel that started out as identical flat pieces welded around the perimeter. This works well for things like a 2-stroke engine's expansion chamber, but of course the final shape will often be imperfect and hard to replicate precisely. It still seems like you might be able to inflate some sheet metal into a die that was, perhaps, made of wood. Its greatest value is probably in entertainment...
That turned out sweet! The slightly rounded corners looked fine, nothing to worry about. PS we are a motorcycle shop so loved the Kristina burn out haha
As an alternative to tracing it on the steel you can use spray contact adhesive and just glue it on. This is a common method for those of us transferring complicated designs to metal for doing repousse and chasing.
Just as side note. You can place a piece of high durometer rubber under the male form, that would help press the corners to a more crisp form. I worked as a tool maker most of my life. Great job on making that press die with simple hand tools. I love your channel.

so cool that your just going to send that to him. shows that you just love doing what you do and not just doing it for the coin 🤙🏻
Yeah man monies not everything although it’s definitely something lol
Wow I really wanna look into this now
@@MakeItKustom - I've also seen people use pressure washers to inflate a sheet metal vessel that started out as identical flat pieces welded around the perimeter. This works well for things like a 2-stroke engine's expansion chamber, but of course the final shape will often be imperfect and hard to replicate precisely. It still seems like you might be able to inflate some sheet metal into a die that was, perhaps, made of wood. Its greatest value is probably in entertainment...
is anyone else continually amazed at what he can accomplish with some pretty simple tools! He should change his name to Master Kustom
Haha thanks Bill!
Awesome video! Will definitely share this with my students!!
That turned out sweet! The slightly rounded corners looked fine, nothing to worry about. PS we are a motorcycle shop so loved the Kristina burn out haha
Haha rad! I used to build a lot of bikes we have always been about the minis
Awesome work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing how you made it happen. Stretch from NZ
You must welcome and thank you so much cheers!
As an alternative to tracing it on the steel you can use spray contact adhesive and just glue it on. This is a common method for those of us transferring complicated designs to metal for doing repousse and chasing.
Doesn't it burn the paper? I like to use tape, but sometimes it'll shrink from the heat of the blade.
Great tip man thanks!
Just as side note. You can place a piece of high durometer rubber under the male form, that would help press the corners to a more crisp form. I worked as a tool maker most of my life. Great job on making that press die with simple hand tools. I love your channel.
Thanks a lot man I’m always learning too I’ll give this a try!
You are a awesome fabricator.. respect
My compliments. You never size to amaze me. That was great
