Thank you for this! I’m a 16 year old and I’ve been trying to get into comics! I really love Robert Crumb’s art and I love learning more about the underground comix and all of that stuff! R. Crumb is one of my biggest inspirations for my comics and I’m so happy that I get to learn more about the art that I love

I lived in the rural north west and the only reason I found them was because of a head shop in our town.

The only comic books I ever collected were of the underground variety. My collection consists of 33 comic books and I still have them. The only improvement I've done to them is put them all in those clear plastic covers so they will last another 50 years.

I would ditch school.. hed for the local head shoppe"JOINT EFFORT" if i had a couple of bucks and a pack of smokes I'd buy a comic kick back on a display waterbed among the blacklights, hoookas,chillums,posters,t-shirts and sandlewood etc etc. Hymie would lock the door go in the storeroom the backdoor opened and closed Hymie came back and tossed me a lid gratis. Red or gold it was all Nogales "Nog-gie No High" Hymie then unlocked the front door and sat back down at the register. I just smiled and continued reading Dr.Atomic,Freak Bro's,Zap, BAM the door swings open I couldn't believe it. As I was being escorted out I said how did you find me? "Easy this is the only place that sells your filthy perverted sex comix. I's not all sex. Dr. Atomic has a step by step distillation and either water wash....MOM ! AHHH 1973

An old phrase.. It was used in a 1936 song called “Truckin’ My Blues Away” by Blind Boy Fuller. According to Wikipedia, the phrase originated from this song. As for its oldest appearance in print, the earliest I’ve found it is from an Australian newspaper called The Herald, published in 1938:

Why did you leave Vaughn Bode off the list?

An oversight on my part- unfortunately, I made a bunch of them! I was figuring out how to do these videos as I was teaching the class on campus during Covid, and missed a few things (and made a few minor errors over the course of 45 hours of lectures).

I always thought the Underground Comix started out in 1967 with Yarrowstalks
    The East Village Other
    & Zap #0
