John Goodman is highly underrated. He's cut from the same type of cloth as the late great comedians Belushi, Candy and Farley but showed early on his serious chops. One of my favorite roles of his is in Arachnophobia
I think my favorite role for him was in The Babe, playing an American hero, an overgrown child and troubled party animal was a great acting opportunity for him
What I love so much about these videos is that they're not about making fun of obscure comedies from the 90s and going "Why the hell does this exist" so much as looking at movies most people probably would have passed over at first glance and going "Hey, it made me laugh, so it must be good!" This is like the anti-Nostalgia Critic: instead of making me feel ashamed for laughing at movies that seem a little overly-simple on the surface, it's encouraging me to enjoy them for what they are. I feel nothing but happiness watching your videos.
I agree that sometimes the previews and premise seems dumb but the movie turns out great. Caddyshack looked like a loser with the shots of the dumb gopher (and Ted Knight how could he be funny)? But Caddyshack is a classic from the Murray and Chevy golf schtick alone. I turned my nose up against My Cousin Vinny because I mistakenly thought it would be about that dumb karate kid actor playing a dumb guy from Brooklyn (yeah I know "wax on wax off" was funny, but Macchio and his dumas screenwriters were nothing but annoying to me in the Karate Kid movies) . But when I finally watched My Cousin Vinny, I was amazed at how funny and charming Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei were, and even Ralph Macchio was kind of funny,.... one of my very favorite movies.
Love this movie. Goodman showed his drama chops in the scene he accuses of Miranda of setting him up. Met Goodman at the Dallas Airport. Man he is tall. Told him I thought King Ralph was great. He shook his head like i was crazy but he laughed and gave me his autograph.
Rewatched this recently and I was struck by how well John Goodman played the straight scenes as well as the comedy. When he starts to take charge and act like a king, you knew he was being serious. Just shows what range he has as an actor.
I hadn't realized that until watching this video just now. I was like, "Wait... that's Rose's mom!" 😂 I loved this movie as a kid, but never made the connection later on when watching new Who.
Richard Griffiths was considered for the part of the Doctor, following Tom Baker's departure in 1981 but was unavailable. He was strongly considered once again to take on the role of the Eighth Doctor, had the series continued past 1989.
Nostalgia critic needs to learn how to space out a sentence, his pacing is horrible, it too much of a distraction for me to enjoy his videos. He speeds up and slows down so much it makes it hard to follow
@Commander Keen he was funny in the early years but when Doug self canceled his show and then he came back 6 months later that's when the show fell apart. And then when people were calling out on his narcissistic BS behind the scenes he became more of an angry prick on the show
i used to watch this movie almost every friday night with my grandpa during my childhood and it's always been one of my gotos for a laugh. it's rarely talked about though and usually a movie i introduce people to so it's awesome seeing so many other people remember it fondly. thank you for this series as a whole because that's been my reaction to every video. like just one person making a video on movies like this is awesome but then to see the comments full of people who love it just as much after years of thinking no one knew about it but you. it's great, man. these videos are awesome.
I`m in love with this after the guy giving the speech of "our new king of all these things, etc etc" and you know its gonna be a fakeout, is he gonna stumble through the doors, do something embarrassing, something vulgar? but instead a really casual looking guy comes through the doors and gives a silent "Hey!" It was nice seeing the joke be subtle and more about him just being a nice dude, than some big pratfall with him as a moron
The only part they go overboard where it's like "come on" was the tipping of all the wine glasses at the ball. That seemed like too much clumsiness for the character and could have gone without... but was fun seeing them spill like dominoes; especially as a kid. As an adult just now re-watching, it's a bit too much almost makes his character a klutz when his character and sing and dance and play piano.
King Ralph was quite a hit here in the UK. I was only about ten when it came out, but I do remember it was treated as the must-see movie of the year ('course, that might've been because Roseanne had just started screening over here and that was a huge success). It's always puzzled me how it's since gone on to be overlooked. It's not a great film, but there are some wonderful moments and ideas in there. Surprised no one's remade it, quite frankly.
I had the honour of seeing it when it came out in the cinema when I was a young teen. Was a big John Goodman fan from seeing him on Roseanne. I also really fancied Camille Coduri who I had first seen in the previous year's Nuns on the Run.
Another great "fish out of water" type movie is the James Belushi and Charles Grodin movie called Taking Care Of Business(1991) ....A review of that one would be great
Thank you for putting out this series. You are talking about films that I love that people have just forgotten, and it's nice to see someone show them the same respect I do.
I worked as a tourguide in early 90s. I’d take US military on bus tours to Amsterdam and London. Europe uses PAL, so I could only show movies in English that I could find in the UK. I’d show this and European Vacation and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This was back when TVs on a bus just started coming out. My passengers loved King Ralph! I still love this happy little movie. Thanks for a look back.
Dang I had darn near forgotten that this movie existed, much less that it starred John Goodman, who has become one of my favorite all-time actors for sure!
3:16 aww you cut of my favorite bit in that scene where John says ooh a little bonus there! As he gets more sugar in his cup than expected. Shame you didn't leave that little gem in as you played out most of that particular scene. I love this film and always have. Thanks for talking about it!
Joely Richardson having that low voice was one of the funniest elements of this movie, until she shows off a side that you'd expect a bored royal to show. xD
Another great John Goodman preformance, and another in my opinion "Almost Cult Classic" would be Always directed by Setven Speilberg. It's an often forgotten movie, but I really it.
I was 15 when I saw that movie and I must say it makes me laugh just as much today as it did back then. I have friends in The Netherlands that just celebrated kings day, I think I will recommend them give this movie a try! Great job recapping a fun movie!
I've seen the trailer for this fun and interesting learning your lineage story. And it's awesome to find our how it is made entertaining by the cast and hijinks-filled premise. Keep it up!
I found your channel recently and I'm loving these videos. I'll have to check this out. One film that I think is also a almost cult classic, for me, is Stay Tuned. It's a pretty good movie that no one really talks about.
This was fun to revisit! King Ralph was the first film I rented on VHS by myself for my own money! I mostly remember taking good time on picking it out, while my dad was waiting in the car outside. He got so tired of waiting for me the he stormed in to the video store and pulled me out! Ow that I have my own kids - I can relate! Don’t remember much from the movie, but the beginning where the royal family all die stuck in there!
It's good. Just now had to watch it again... it's been probably about 20 years since I watched the entire thing. As an adult and actually know something about the UK and their governmental system, they did a great job actually pulling off the premise; it wasn't super corny and flat out wrong.
Very fitting of you to post this video on a Sunday. I can remember my first or second time seeing this flick and it was on a sunday back in the mid 90s. I watched this at the dinner table with my mother and we ate the best beef roast I have ever had in my life. Very memorable moment in my life.
So happy to have found this at the thrift store. I have purchased so many movies in this series based off of your videos. Just spent a whopping $20 for a used copy of Dutch! Lol
Absolutely adore this film, it's the only one on the list I'd seen before but John Goodman just fills me with joy. Definitely watching lots of others in this playlist.
In the UK this IS a cult classic. All us 80s and 90s kids grew up with it on TV all the time. I wasn't aware Americans didn't know about it. Cos everyone over here does.
Get out of my head! Every almost cult classic is in my collection and I always show King Ralph to unsuspecting guest who want to watch a comedy. Keep up the great work!
I remember as a kid my mom loved this movie and I didn't like it much at all, but when I grow up and know in my late 30's I became to love this movie. I'm fond of the movie cuz the memories.
I went to the cinema in Ireland as a kid to see this film. I still remember surfing the seats in a near empty cinema. I did manage to calm down and concentrate once the film got going. I really liked John Goodman because he had been in Rosanne. Thanks for this video :)
I vaguely remember this movie when it came out, but my grandparents had it on VHS. It's not high art, but it's very enjoyable and has more going for it than appears.
The Man Who Knew Too Little. It is the MOST underrated Bill Murray movie ever made. It is possibly his best comedic performance of his career. Would love to see a video on it.
Weirdly watched today on dvd from the 25pence section. What a great fun movie, I saw at cinema when out donkeys years ago and still a silly charming little movie. Some great one liners and actors who know it not the Greatest script of all time but carry the movie-Goodman always value in any role, O'Toole reprising his last emperor role and bringing a stately dignified bearing to his character as does Richard Griffith as all round good chap. James Villiers as PM inspired casting with again the right amount of tongue in cheek playing. Camille coduri (now better known as rose Tyler's mum DR WHO) in her movie debut I think incredibly charming and sexy as Ralph's shy stripper gf. John hurt playing up the cad role and twisting every vowel. Great fun and entertainment Great review
Yes, and it's pretty good. Just watched it again to make sure it wasn't due to my child ignorance. Even as an adult knowing how things really work in the UK, it still works, they actually invoke some real history at times.
Don’t attack me if you already have, but you could also do “Dutch” “My Date With The President’s Daughter” “Brink” “Meatballs 2” that’s all I can think of for now, but I love this channel, KEEP THEM COMIN’ PLEASE!!!
This is a really good review and thanks for reminding me it existed. There's one thing I'd like to point out though: John Goodman did NOT have fun and was actually incredibly stressed throughout the filming. Read about the director and his reaction to the singing scene - and how many takes it took. John talks about King Ralph a lot. The interviews aren't hard to find. Cheers sir!
On the plus side, he got to pick the brain of Peter O'Toole about acting (and got to be taken to all of Peter's favorite watering holes, though Peter was in a sober period himself at the time).
Even better than picking this up out of the $5 bin is picking up the "Family Favorites: 10 Movie Collection". I grabbed it for $5 on Amazon, and it looks to still be available. In addition to this one, you get Cloak and Dagger (with E.T.'s Henry Thomas and Dabney Coleman!) , Wizard, Cop and a Half, Matinee (an even more underrated John Goodman film IMO), Sgt. Bilko, Ghost Dad, Ed, A Simple Wish, and The Borrowers.
Love seeing Peter O'Toole trying to keep it together in the serving tea scene.
John Goodman is highly underrated. He's cut from the same type of cloth as the late great comedians Belushi, Candy and Farley but showed early on his serious chops. One of my favorite roles of his is in Arachnophobia
That's right.. He's Bad! 😎
He was great in Roseanne but was crap in the Flinstones.
I think my favorite role for him was in The Babe, playing an American hero, an overgrown child and troubled party animal was a great acting opportunity for him
Exterminator in Arachnophobia was really awesome :)
Arachnophobia is great. "There's no room for amateurs in this game."
What I love so much about these videos is that they're not about making fun of obscure comedies from the 90s and going "Why the hell does this exist" so much as looking at movies most people probably would have passed over at first glance and going "Hey, it made me laugh, so it must be good!" Now I can't unsee how much that role was meant for Bill Murray 🤣
I know. I can just hear him howling the songs in my head.
Rewatched this recently and I was struck by how well John Goodman played the straight scenes as well as the comedy. When he starts to take charge and act like a king, you knew he was being serious. Just shows what range he has as an actor.
I remember there was a Burger King promo for this movie, with collector glasses.
I miss collector glasses.
Loved this film as a kid, used to air all the time on terresteral TV here in the '90s too.
Cool a wild Guru Larry sighting, Helloooooo you! P.S. congrats on the weight loss mate!
*random Molyneux reference*
But is there a video game made by LJN of king Ralph?
Hello you
I wondered if Britbongs liked this movie too
Love this one. John Goodman has such a good singing voice. And the movie is pretty darn funny.
As one critic pointed out, with his talent, he should have been a headliner in Vegas.
I'm sure that great singing voice is partly what got him cast in Blues Brothers 2000
People like us,
Growing as big as a house
Fun fact: the actress who played Miranda, Camille Coduri, also played Rose Tyler's mum on Doctor Who.
And John Hurt played the War Doctor.
I hadn't realized that until watching this video just now. I was like, "Wait... that's Rose's mom!" 😂
I loved this movie as a kid, but never made the connection later on when watching new Who.
I knew she looked familiar
Richard Griffiths was considered for the part of the Doctor, following Tom Baker's departure in 1981 but was unavailable. He was strongly considered once again to take on the role of the Eighth Doctor, had the series continued past 1989.
Pretty crazy, actors playing other people
Saw this one in the theater with my mom. We both loved it. Thanks for featuring it!
Thanks for watching!
I f*cking love this movie. It is easily one of my favorite comedies of all time.
I recommended this channel to my brother for the John Candy retrospective and he subscribed immediately. Keep up the good, positive nostalgia.
John Goodman bowls in king Ralph Flintstones and big lebowski
This channel deserves a lot more subscribers the quality here is some of the best bar none
I have enjoyed your videos more than the Nostalgia Critic. You don't yell or scream like a b****. You actually respect and honor childhood TV / movies
Thanks so much! I grew up on a steady diet of Nostalgia Critic. While I appreciate his humor, the cynicism just isn’t my style.
Nostalgia critic needs to learn how to space out a sentence, his pacing is horrible, it too much of a distraction for me to enjoy his videos. He speeds up and slows down so much it makes it hard to follow
@@HatsOffEntertainment I used to be a huge fan, but I grew out of him.
@Commander Keen he was funny in the early years but when Doug self canceled his show and then he came back 6 months later that's when the show fell apart. And then when people were calling out on his narcissistic BS behind the scenes he became more of an angry prick on the show
Better than the nostalgia critic is a very low bar

In this movie, Peter O'Toole gives great explanation of what the monarchy means to great Britain
I'm immediately going to find this clip! Thanks for sharing that.
I`m in love with this after the guy giving the speech of "our new king of all these things, etc etc" and you know its gonna be a fakeout, is he gonna stumble through the doors, do something embarrassing, something vulgar?

I'd forgotten she was in that. Actually nuns on the run is a movie I've consciously wiped from my memory
Peter O'Toole is just underated now. Like he's one of those actors who can hard carry some drek and elevate good movies to great movies.
Love this film, it’s definitely a classic for me. Glad you covered it.
Uploaded 30 seconds ago. I was quick!
Loved this movie back in the day, didn't know it was Goodman's first flick.
It was his first starring flick. I don't know if it was his first, but he had a faily big supporting role in _Raising Arizona._
He was the coach in "Revenge of the Nerds", so - pretty good supporting villain. Influenced the head of Cobra Kai.
Another great "fish out of water" type movie is the James Belushi and Charles Grodin movie called Taking Care Of Business(1991) ....A review of that one would be great
That's a great one
Charles Grodin... one minute he's the dad in family comedies, the next he's an old man seemingly overnight. Great talent tho
Thank you for putting out this series. You are talking about films that I love that people have just forgotten, and it's nice to see someone show them the same respect I do.
Thanks so much!
This movie was overplayed on Comedy Central 20 years ago

This was his first lead role in a film, and he knocked it out of the park.
I've always enjoyed this movie anytime I would catch it on tv when I was younger. I'm glad you decided to do a video on it. Keep up the awesome work!
3:16 aww you cut of my favorite bit in that scene where John says ooh a little bonus there!
As he gets more sugar in his cup than expected. Shame you didn't leave that little gem in as you played out most of that particular scene.
I love this film and always have. Thanks for talking about it!
The most absurd part of this film is the notion that ANYONE would ever wear both a Chicago Cubs cap and a Green Bay Packers jacket.
His comedic side roles in Raising Arizona and Arachnophobia were a perfect lead into this starring role. Love all of his character choices.
I watch this in theaters 30 years ago. I loved it so much
Joely Richardson having that low voice was one of the funniest elements of this movie, until she shows off a side that you'd expect a bored royal to show. xD
4:00 And so much more energy than in (sigh) Blues Brothers 2000.
Underrated classic that one is
Duke Duke Duke of Earl

You didn't sell me with this at first, but after the over the top opening, now I'm curious about this because it's so bizarre.
Once you relax and decide that you're just going to ride it out, it's charmingly silly and enjoyably excessive.

“ILL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND”
- John Goodman
So happy to have found this at the thrift store. I have purchased so many movies in this series based off of your videos. Just spent a whopping $20 for a used copy of Dutch! Lol
My 75 year old grandma still has this film on VHS
I wanna see you do one for Beverly Hills Ninja

When my grandpa was extremely sick, he would watch this movie on repeat. I have nothing but good memories of this movie.
As a kid, I always saw this movie at our version of Blockbusters, and never was interested. Now I am! I haven't seen your video, hope you don't mind.
This one used to play on Aussie TV late at night back in the 90's. I can still remember bits and bobs from it even now.
Looking back, it DOES look like the movie was written with Bill Murray in mind. I can totally picture him in the lead.
I came across this gem for the first time a few years ago, and was upset it wasn't more popular.
In the UK this IS a cult classic. All us 80s and 90s kids grew up with it on TV all the time. I wasn't aware Americans didn't know about it. Cos everyone over here does.
Please do a retrospect "Get A Life" with Chris Elliott or "Cabin Boy" with Chris Elliott
cabin boy!! yes!!
Get a Life was a weird show and I loved it growing up. Good call!
Get a life! Oh man that takes me back.
John Goodman has always been one of my favorite actors, too. Never knew this was his first film!
That tea serving scene completely sold the film to me. I have to check it out now.

I have seen this and think it's a great example of a cult class keep them coming and thank you so much for giving us this channel.

I hope you're not talking about the Farrelly brothers movie. I think that one's well above the "almost" status.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq Well ... so is *this one!*
Yeah, that movie is pretty beloved. At least in the US
The mohawked punks they cut to were really amusing when I saw this as a kid
I always thought they sounded sophisticated with their British accent for punks.
I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you do this film.
I love King Ralph
Love the scene with the prospective bride with the voice "of a tuba".
LOL the Tiny Bubbles rendition just sold me
I saw King Ralph more times than I ever intended, because it was a very popular in flight movie when I was growing up.
This is such a great movie! I'm bummed more people haven't seen it. But that's what this series is all about!
The most ridiculous thing about the movies is someone being a Chicago Cubs fans AND a Green Bay Packers fan at the same time! Haha!

Great review
I’m sorry John Goodman, Peter O’Toole and Richard Griffiths did a film together??
Yes, and it's pretty good. Just watched it again to make sure it wasn't due to my child ignorance. Even as an adult knowing how things really work in the UK, it still works, they actually invoke some real history at times.
Don’t forget John Hurt.

i remember watching this one sunday afternoon here in the uk, probably hungover. i got through it no problem. want to watch it again now.
I saw a violin player while Goodman was playing the piano but I didn't hear a violin at all.
I’ve never heard anyone pronounce Bill Murray’s name that way. This is mighty perplexing.
King Ralph is a Cult Classic, in my mind. Period.
I can't believe they got Peter O'Toole and John Hurt for this movie.
