- You've probably all heard this story already if you follow Andy from Kent Survival! I joined him for a weekend adventure to paddle across the River Medway in Kent to Hoo Ness, one of the uninhabited islands on the river, to explore and wild camp in the remains of Hoo Fort.
We achieved what we set out to do, but it didn't QUITE go according to plan!
WARNING: PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS, ESPECIALLY THE WAY WE DID!
Big thanks to Andy, Chris (Wilderness Nomad) and his father-in-law John.

Thanks for watching and to everyone who commented. The kind words regarding our safety are much appreciated.
LOL it’s all part of the fun !
I was a coxswain of a lifeboat and responded to over 600 call outs
Mud rescue is one of the hardiest rescues to do theres many techniques involved
I would also encourage people to still have advanced and just learn form what happens So don’t stop and I would say go back and try it all again using what you know now !
Simple thing to always do tell someone where you are going and when you will be back and what to do if you are not back in time!
Take more than one form of communication with you
Phone, VHF radio, flairs and be happy to just sit it out until someone come for you!
I would be happy to run some training for you if you would like just let me know ?
But the most important thing of all is don’t to stop exploring and having adventures!
Best Regards
Dave, Jo and Louie
👍😀🐾
Glad you are both safe, an excellent video. Lesson learn by all glad you showed it to let other know the dangers. Keep on trekking.
Bravo to yourself and Kent Survival for being so honest about this adventure. Just shows how one has to be careful where water ,tides and muddy conditions are involved. I have walked that shoreline and the river can look so peaceful and beautiful . Another tale to tell round your campfire. Stay safe and thank you again for having such interesting videos.
Thanks mate.
Been waiting for this one since hearing about it on Andy's channel, sounds like you had fun mate !
Great video enjoyed the video like the views nice day for filming like the video enjoyed it thanks for a great video
Nothing ventured nothing gained gents. Self reliance and the ability to adapt and resolve problems are skills you have both exercised on this one. I love your get out and try attitude as well as embracing new challenges. I am sure you felt at times pretty desperate and in actual danger, but you are both wiser for it and have learned some very valuable lessons. A great story and I did wee a bit on Andy’s account just because of his dead pan delivery. Great work Tom (and Andy).
I’m glad you put the video together Tom, I watched Andy’s and when he said you’d lost your camera, I assumed you’d lost all your footage! What a trip!!Hoo fort looks amazing, as you said, really well preserved. Thanks for sharing the place and the story! Cheers, Simon p.s. how was the skin after all that mud therapy?
Thanks. It's an honour to hear from RUclips royalty such as yourself. It was my backup camera I lost but I'm in the process of buying a replacement. I use my phone as my main camera, the theory being that ANYONE can make a channel with limited resources. It took a couple of washes, the sunburn was the worst. I had a lovely tan for a week and then it went! Lol.
What an ordeal you've had! Tolkein said that you know you're having an adventure when you wish you were at home in bed. I don't think you should be hard on yourself. On a positive note, you were actually really well prepared to survive when your plans went awry. Other people would have been stuck without water or shelter or food. What is really good about your videos is your honesty and 'realness'.
Thanks mate, I completely agree with you, it wasn't that bad tbh. Really appreciate the kind words.
Hey mate hopefully your sort of laughing about it now, it's a big problem with those blow up dingys they wrongly make them look really substantial when they're not and for that reason very dangerous, the wind can and does take people out to sea, they are toys.
Anyway don't beat yourselves up over it, it's all just a learning curve...
I thoroughly enjoyed this... thanks mate
Amazing X I am so glad you two were alright after that adventure. Thank you so much for putting the footage up. The fort looks really great so much history. Please be careful on these trips X Take Care and Keep Safe X
thanks for your concern. i might be able to get a proper boat sorted out from a subscriber and get over to Darnet fort. thanks for watching. X
Well done gentleman, good video.....We have all done it mate. 😂 it’s part of being human! Lol, for a moment there, I thought you may of eaten Andy, when we didn’t see him in the first part of the vid 😂 😂 You will both have a good laugh about it one day, Tom 👍🏻
Whoa! That could have been a lot worse, glad everyone made it back
Might be a bit late, but another tip for the future; never wear chest waders when you're on a boat, if you go overboard they'll fill with water and pull you down.
Thanks for the tip mate. Couple of other people said that. I was so lucky on this one.
first thing I did was buying new dry bags too haha, I think the best thing about that trip was helping each others morale, glad you got me to get in the fort in the morning.. I would have regretted just sulking on the beach.
That was the personal training skills coming out lol. cheers for the same too mate, I don't regret it, it was a fantastic adventure! I would do Darnet and possibly Hoo Fort again, but DIFFERENTLY!
haha definitely differently... loved the clip at the end
Glad to see you all got home safe and sound, and top marks to your rescuers , its always a tough one when you get in a bit of mess and have to ask for help, but never be afraid to send an SOS or call someone. Lessons learned and hopefully friendships strengthened through adversity. Time for some canoe lessons eh ? , ATB :), I did take one look at your Dinghy and think , "Open water in that ??" takes some nerve to set off on the Briny deep in nowt but blowup paddle'in pool with oars :)
Live and learn Tom/Andy. awesome tour of the fort, would love to see the land owners actually repair it up to near working order. I've see a few rebuilt forts and shelters here and there out in the UK and what not. would really love to see more of them as you guys out there have hundreds of them. Sorry you guys had a rough time of that trip but its all for your youtube fans and the likes. Don't get to down on yourselfs, not every video can be a gold bar. gotta take those copper bars every now and then. Just know we will still watch you even on your worst day. Cheer Tom all the best from your yonder pond buddy.
lessons learned!! good to know a local who can get you out of trouble!!
Watched Andys telling of this adventure and loved it!!! Glad you’re both ok and at least you got a video and a tale to tell out of it!!!! Silver lining etc..... All the best!!! 😎
OMG Tom this is EPIC! 😁
I will not lie, this is exactly the kind of mess I would get myself into also.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful Great adventure.
"Its what makes up the thing we call life" and without it you have not lived.
Damn right. I don't get what everyone's moaning about. I fucking loved it looking back on it!
Glad you and Andy made it home safe.
What an adventure Tom! Glad you're safe and well mate. Looking forward to your next (dry land) camp.
cheers mate, i'll drop you a text in the week about planning a wild camp together.
A great adventure lads. Well done for getting through.
great adventure, one to tell the grandkids, glad you're both safe. look forward to seeing the return trip. atb
Nobody tells the tale of when you had a great trip the weather was perfect and nothing went wrong.
I had my Sunday dinner last week on an island by canoe 🛶
I do. I show every trip whether it was good or bad. Although there is no such thing as a bad trip. Just being outside walking , exploring and camping is soul food. Sounds good, well done.
Good to see you are both safe. A return trip there at some point will help digest this trip better. (Hamilton, Ontario)
I'm less than 15 minutes into the vid and I'm thinking, glad you both made it out of there!
Hahaha! Could've been worse. Looking back it wasn't that bad tbh lol.
Lol I'm now watching "Call of The Wild", Charlton Heston 1972, haven't seen The Film for years......I'm wondering how it all ends for all of you...….heh heh
Hats off to you, real adventure for sure but you had the odds stacked against you and you are lucky to emerge unscathed. But what is life without adventure?
Comment of the video. 🙏👍
Class Adventure!
Thanks mate.
The curse of Hoo Fort Island 🤣
Lessons learned lads, by the way are you going to salvage the dinghy ? :) Keep smiling, Byeeeeee. Les
We've left it there mate. As much as we both don't agree with leaving rubbish behind there was no way we could bring it back with us. If we do ever go over there again with a proper boat we'll pick it up if it's still there. Cheers mate.
:)
Take up novel writing, a good plot for the first chapter of a horror story.
Back safe that's the main thing.
Saw this a few weeks back on one of your channels, can't remember whose but can't see it now. Anyway, I picked a boat up today from Upnor and as I passed Hoo fort i thought of you both then you post this up half hour later. If I'd of known you were doing Hoo fort I could of been on standby as support 😄 If you do Darnet give me a shout, il be on standby. All the best.
definitely mate, drop me an email and we'll arrange something. cheers.
Not sure how to find your email here but I'm up for helping out if I can. The boat I got from near Hoo came with a rowing boat which I've still to pick up. Could be a free boat for you if it's any good?

i'll have a word with Andy and see what he says. It may be worth you dropping him a message too as he wants to do Darnet Fort too.
Ooooh my god almost had to build a new life there in the fort.
great story (sorry)
glad you both are ok.
glad you have real friends and came to the rescue (the hero)
Thanks for watching mate, yeah Chris really got us out of trouble there. Lessons learnt.
TOM OUTDOORS yes and i learnt watching this video :D
better boat for next survival trip.
and someone who can come and rescue me :D
there is no better education like adversity, good to see you all get back ok 👍
Great video.Glad you're both OK. I went on hoo years ago,not on an inflatable though lol
Hahaha!
Sorry to hear it didn't go according to plan - sounds like it should be called the River Mudway! atb snack.
Did you and Andy have a falling out? I cant remember seeing you two doing anything together for a long time now.
No not at all mate I still chat to him. I think it's just our channels are going in different directions. Hopefully we'll do a couple of meet ups again as I'm planning a trip to Darnet Fort next to this one.
@@TOM_OUTDOORS Good to hear! 👍
H. M. S Alan! 🤣
that was my idea! i loved that! lol. i was laughing for ages, probably cursed it, hence why it got a puncture!
Still a great video tom stay safe
So you wouldn’t recommend taking a blow up kayak across then 🙈
No, take arm bands and a rubber ring instead👍
You live and learn life happens
Absolutely mate I agree. Cheers.
Great vid! I'll buy the film rights if I may and call it "Hoo's Fort?" - Take it to Hollywood... or Bollywood. Winner.
Haha comment of the week! Lol. Cheers mate.
Have you considered a hovercraft...…. or paraglider? ;)
