    There was definitely a lot of overlap for the AT and PS/2 standards for keyboards, as well as the serial vs. PS/2 standards for mice. I have a Pentium 100 based PC from the mid-1990s which has no PS/2 ports at all. On the other hand, I have an early 90s IBM PS/2 with a 486SX25 processor and a PS/1 with a 286 processor, each of which naturally have both PS/2 ports.

      I had a K6-2 based PC that I got for Christmas in 1999 that had an AT form factor. I had to use an XT keyboard and if I remember correctly, it had a PCI slot that had a PS/2 connector for the mouse.

      Ditto. My Dell Pentium 120MHz bought in 1995 (a customized Intel Advanced/EV motherboard; still functioning) had two PS/2 ports and could use any modern PS/2 keyboard or mouse, but an Asus TXP4 (designed in 1997) with Pentium MMX 233 MHz I picked up in a recycling center had only one AT port, and the on-board PS/2 port had to be connected via a ribbon cable.

      Alot of budget motherboards had hybrids. I had one with atx power at keyboard and ps2 mouse that took amd processors (onboard 24 bit svga graphics). It was branded eaglemax, I think there were simular ones called JetWay also. These were all imported by chinese guys who had computer shops. the Cyrix MGX motherboards also had simular sollutioins since they were meant to be the cheapest way to "upgrade" a computer. At that time I worked as a system builder in a computer shop. I'm not sure wether these hybrid boards were ever intended for the western market unless they were Cyrix MGX. There were AT and ATXboards though I believe up to k62/P3/4 I seem to remember my dad got an AT board because he was so fond of his big tower case.

    Vintage keyboard nerd here: AT and PS/2 keyboards are completely protocol compatible, so all you need to get a keyboard to work on that motherboard is a passive adapter that you can get for cheap online and your PS/2 keyboard should work without issue.

    6:36 You can get a PS/2 to DIN5 connector pretty easily for your keyboard. They're essentially the same protocol IIRC.
    Whether a mouse or keyboard works on USB, PS2 or serial is dependant on what protocols the device itself understands. Thats why sometimes you can use a PS/2 mouse in a serial port but not every time, or a USB keyboard in PS/2 (up until recently that is).

  • @bad.sector
    @bad.sector 2 года назад +3

    Oh... I have several of Midi tower style machines. Your source is *somewhat* right... the form factor actually predates PS/2! This is an AT style board and PSU. It's a novum you actually have a PS/2 mouse port (that's what it *only* can be for AT style machines), you usually only had serial ports for your mouse, especially before 1995 (this machine must be of somewhere around 1997, at least the CPU). PS/2 and AT (DIn style) connectors are electrically compatible (so your ordered adapter will work), most PS/2 mice though won't work with a serial adapter - the mouse itself must support COM ports then (rarely the case).
    Whenever you hear beep codes from such machines, the first things you probably always want to do is to reseat the cards and memory chips. That solves around 50% of such problems ;).
    Once you got it up and running, it's a fun machine for Win9x and DOS games! ;)

    • @bad.sector
      @bad.sector 2 года назад

      @@EvilTurkeySlices While the board BIOS chip has a copyright of 1995, the 6x86 has been released in 1996. The 6x86L (notice the L) has been released after that to address heat issues. Given that it's the highest clocking model of 6x86 (150 MHz, not MX), I'd assume it's around 1997. Getting higher clock speeds needs process improvements you don't have at the start. This is probably a cheaper machine meant for the low end market, the Trident card (also cheap) adds to that impression.

    Serial keyboard? Would that be a keyboard that would be connected to an actual serial port (DB9 or DB25), or a keyboard that goes to a DIN connector (round like PS/2 but larger), apparently also known as AT keyboard port? That kind of stuff I've used, though apprently some really old PC's (like 8088) might have had different connections, but I'm not sure if the connector would have been different or if it would be just different signaling.
    The switch from the larger round connector for keybard to the PS/2 didn't happen instantly. The first PC I had was a 286 and it had PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse. And I remember that the 100 MHz Pentium PC I had later had the larger round keyboard port. But I'm not sure about which kind of port my next PC after that had.

    If you check that card the PS/2 port is on, it will probably say its for a mouse. Alot of early PS/2 mice came with cards, especially Microsoft mice.

    You can buy a PS/2 ---> AT connector adapter and use your regular PS/2 keyboard (that's what I do on my AMD K6-2 build and it works fine)

    takes me back used to love tinkering with those old AT systems .. but when I moved to another country, my wife sort of stopped me from filing the house with retro junk .. well she calls it that .. I dont I call it history .. funny how they always say your stuff is junk and wants to throw it so she can put here crap in instead ..

    They sent you a Cyrix x86? Isn't there something in the Geneva convention about such acts of hostility?

    Keyboards only work in PS/2 or ATA. They don't with serial. However, I look forward to the followup. :)

    Just an FYI. There were never no serial based keyboards for PC's. Only serial mice. Some ps/2 mice (not all) supported serial mode operation using a ps/2 to serial adapter.
