You are also impose your meaning on the universe when you say it has no meaning. Your meaning is that it has no meaning. And that's imposing too. The universe is as it is. I've always thought him to be a shallow person, but now I see this beautiful, optimistic, and realistic side of him.

Good conversation between two fine minds. About 15 years ago I figured the meaning of life was to have a good time, make yourself useful and avoid harm wherever possible. As soon as the thought arrived I knew that millions of other people would have thought pretty well the same thought before I did because I could see it in the approach of many people I knew.
"Meaning" is never out there somewhere, it is by definition a phenomenon of the human mind interacting with the world. Saying we create and discover our own meaning is not a cop out at all! Meaning, like ethics and love are emergent phenomena that arise experientially and require sentience and context. A bit like a rainbow. Take away the observing perceptual system and the combination of light and water in the air do not produce some objective and eternally meaningful rainbow. The world exists independent of our minds, but meaning does not, any more than ethics, love, music or Shakespeare!
Truth and meaning about the physical universe and all its natural laws which operate in the same way existed before you or human beings stood on this Earth. Truth and meaning does not exist in the potter's clay or the potter's finished pot. Only the potter's attributes are seen in the finished pot. The source of the truth and meaning exists outside of nature. Your challenge is to find this source. Scientists and philosophers haven't found the source of truth so they go round and round the bush hoping to find it.
"There is no objective, universal meaning only subjective, independent interpretations" ...that would seem like a pretty concise way to answer this question.
'...no universal meaning....' Utimately that may be so, but practically we need a shared meaning for society to function. How is a shared meaning between people to be arrived at? Also, how do you pick your meaning from those on offer?
The question of whether the cosmos has a reason or purpose delves into profound philosophical and scientific territory. From a scientific perspective, the cosmos operates according to natural laws and processes, such as gravity and quantum mechanics, which can explain how structures and phenomena arise but not necessarily why. Philosophically, the search for purpose involves exploring metaphysical and existential questions about the meaning of existence and the universe’s role in it. Various perspectives, from religious and spiritual beliefs to existential and nihilistic viewpoints, offer different interpretations of the cosmos's purpose, or lack thereof. Can scientific understanding of the cosmos, including theories about its origin and evolution, provide insights into the broader question of whether the universe has a purpose or reason? How do different philosophical and theological perspectives interpret the idea of cosmic purpose, and how might these views intersect with or diverge from scientific explanations?
To all people that doubt that life has a meaning I ask you to do a serious research on what is being discovered about the nature of consciousness. It seems to point out that consciousness is a structuring force of organization. Thus whether or not the Universe had meaning in the beginning before the birth of consciousness is not that important anymore. Consciousness makes the Universe meaningful today. Thus we have to find the divine in our self to make this world a paradise rather then a hell.
(comment Part#1) I liked this video. But I gotta say something! I like it when Dr.Michio says:"All of us are born with certain talents, certain abilities & we have to reach the maximum of our capabilities & potential to make the world a better place... to make sure we leave the universe(the world) a better place than we first entered" "we have to create our own meaning....it is a process of self-discovery"
Kaku rocks. The email from heaven is not coming because there is no heaven...But there is LOVE, the foundation of life. When love is the ego is not; when the ego is love is not. Love is beyond meaning and purpose. Why does a rose bloom? “I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing...I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell, possibly; it doesn’t frighten me.” -Richard Feynman, BBC interview in 1981 (seven years before his death)
Meaning of the universe, reason, etc.are aimed at evolution which not only delivers without fail, and in which I am an active participant, purpose is the word. The purpose of evolution is to ensure life and intelligence to evolve. For whom you may ask. For you and me-!!!
3MonkeesInDenial Beyond the big bang everything is speculation, and humans feel this connection with what can be called an universal program, you call "one big organism". From such realizations a responsibility towards evolution, will result in steps that will preserve the environment, which is terminally threatened, while half the world does not even care.
3MonkeesInDenial The complicated genome that drives our evolution is preceded by yet another simpler genome for the evolution of the inorganic world of stars and black holes, fine tuned enough to produce elements, molecules, organic molecules, amino acids etc. and on to life and intelligence. Going back in time one is drawn to an even simpler genome that drives evolution from an earlier time. The big bang produced dark matter and dark energy with opposite properties, Then came particles and anti-particles,matter and anti-matter,negative gravity, temperature etc. This cannot be an accident that the role played by opposites should be so universal. Although not properly understood, I think Hegel unity of opposites, called dialectics is the universal genome responsible for everything before and after big bang. It was the unrivaled intuition of Hegel, who extended the concept to infinity, claiming dialectics as the universal program.
Naimul haq, you are totally off your tracks here if you were a scientist! Metaphysics do not fall under the scope of physical science by definition! So do not twist science to play the role of philosophy! Which itself is off its tracks dealing with metaphysics! Like it or not, evolution doesn't negate by itself creation! unless you believe that electrons, quarks and atoms evolved to have life and intelligence!! They still don't! Scientists, if unbiased, should be more reasoned than this nonsense which belong to stupid heretics only!
I loved this video. I came to the same conclusion when I was younger... when I was going through the usual teenage angst of self discovery. Why am I here? Why do I exist. And I was depressed for while, because I could not find the answers to those questions. Ultimately, and after much reflection, I came to the same conclusion. The meaning, and the why, ultimately has to come from you. Adopting someone else's meaning and someone elses reasons will not feel natural to you, because the answers are not your own.
Benjamin Babeshkin So true. Jiddu Krishnmurti always told his listeners that you have to stand alone, you have to reject all authority and "go into it yoursel". His book "The Awakening of Intelligence" was quite an eye opener for me.
+coachmarc2002 Ontological naturalism, and panpsychism. Or a more understandable version would be an Agnostic/Atheist /Zen Buddhist. A realization that life, matter, energy, consciousness and reality are all connected in some way, but ultimately they all have a scientific explanation. No need for the supernatural.
Well said....... as always. I have the utmost respect for Michio Kaku, and it is always not only interesting but refreshing to hear him speak the truth. ;) thanks for posting this video!
The point of life is simple. To seek God and develop a relationship with him spirituality. It's not hard. We're here because of his love. He's growing his family.
+King Willie King Willie, the prince of powder: "You cannot kill what can't be killed, you cannot stop what can't be stopped. Prepare yourself, policeman." haha classic.
And so as we are part of the universe (we are quite literally the universe observing itself) and we are creating the reason, the answer is yes. It seems odd that following the logic people place the development of sentient being outside what they refer to as the universe when we are just complicated chemistry born of stardust, again, in no poetic sense - quite literally.
happy days asking for purpose is a wrong question .. Things are as they are... No purpose, no meaning (except the one we ourselves inject)... Just inevitability...just reality unfolding...inevitably...
5:35 What if our search inside ourselves tells us that as humans, our knowledge is based upon understanding, and our understanding is based on our perception, thus any idea for a purpose we come up with cannot necessarily be true as it's a perception we just hold to ourselves, not necessarily definitive, and thus, we should just keep searching? This is how I feel, so I'm ever rejecting perspectives and it's crazy... My current thoughts on 'why we're here'? There is no 'why'; we're just here. Life began without purpose and we exist because of a science we cannot perceive. So my purpose in life? Whatever I make it. And I make it the search to possibly, one day, better the world in even a small way to encourage it to continue the search for understanding.
+Jadelight Studio The chemical dopamine makes things seem meaningful. Whether meaning actually exists or not CAN be answered by permanently changing your levels of dopamine. If you perceive things meaningfully, then it is meaningful.
+Patrick S. So... you're saying perhaps my seemingly endless search for absolute facts that may not ever exist because my intelligence dismisses any one fact as being definitive, is meaningful? I do feel it has meaning. But I wonder at the same time if it's not an error in and of itself given the fact that I never seem to, currently, come to conclusions. There's nothing to say one isn't out there but 5 years of this onward and I've had a few revelations, but no conclusions.
1) The "the most commonplace non-religious response" is also the most apt one 2) Well, even Kuhn could be said to be running away from the answer by refuting it; but that would not be accurate, would it?
Life is the reason and life is not a question but a lesson. Without life, the universe has no meaning. We are the reason and though our place in the cosmos might look insignificant, in time, we could become the dominant force. We have the potential to become immortal beings controlling the universe. Expanding to new universes and maybe even creating them.
I have always had the same opinion- or view upon life's meaning is Dr. Michio Kaku. That you create and live by your own purpose in life. Going by such a _philosophy,_ there is however just one glaring dilemma that rather cripples such a point of view, because essentially, that is saying that people like Genghis Khan, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Vlad Dracula, etc. etc... were *right* in doing what they did? I know it seems like an obvious solution to change the philosophy to: _"Live your life the way you want (BUT!)"_ Because then life's purpose almost starts to take a religious turn; _"Live your life the way you want (BUT! Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shall not- etc. etc.)_ My own solution to that is _"Live your life, as your personal challenge."_ Because _'destroying'_ (vandalism, murder, etc.) is by all means _'easy'._ Quite literally within minutes of me clicking "Post" on my comment, I could go out and become a mass-murderer or render several blocks of people homeless by burning their houses to the ground if I wanted to, but I do not, because that would be _"the easy thing"._ Instead, I view- and prefer life to be a challenge. If I instead wanted to 'create' a human (both conception and upbringing) this would take YEARS of hard work. Similar to if I wanted to instead BUILD homes for people, it would take anywhere between months to years in order to achieve. I am the kind of "child" who sits down with the building blocks and spends time to build and create something new. Sadly, for every "child" like me, there are also those who bask in the fleeting malicious moment of _effortlessly_ toppling another's creation, with a single blow.
that's an interesting way to look at life. It is a little fuzzy though where you stand on morality. Are there any moral absolutes? Do we have a duty to treat others well or is it a personal choice everyone gets to make for themselves?
I have a short answer for meaning of life.....God said "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me."Surat Adh-Dhāriyā Verse (51:56) Thanks a lot to Dr.Michio Kaku for this beautiful discussion
In the Sci fi series Babylon 5, the Minbari Delenn once stated, "we are the thinking part of the universe, trying to understand itself." If you look at the universe as being a kind of organism, then this makes sense.
Prof. Kaku talked about the meaning of life, as an individual life of an individual, which in my opinion is to reproduce and survive (love and work for a couple of thousand years) and to perfect our being trying to fit in to the Universe's harmony painlessly; but what is the meaning of Life, Universe and Everything? 42?!
Hey, good for you man. I think you should be grateful of whatever makes you happy. Although I could tell you that Kaku's answer here is somewhat equivalent to lets say if Kuhn gave a physics lecture, and said, "I think gravity is great because it keeps us all grounded." It's not incorrected since it's only's his own opinion, but it's trivial to people who know a thing or two about physics.
How could we know the meaning of the universe if we are stuck inside the universe? The meaning of the universe must lie beyond the universe. Imagine people in the matrix are asking what is the meaning of the matrix. How can they know if they can never leave the matrix?
Outside the Matrix would STILL be 'The Universe'. The universe is all there ever was, all that is & all that will ever be -regardless of whether we can detect it.
One of the potential answers for meaning in idealism is to have experiences, which are in themselves, particular bits of knowledge. Knowledge is the ultimate purpose. Through us, the universal consciousness gains knowledge of itself.
The meaning of life can have a couple of answers. On a purely human scale, we give meaning to each others lives, by being fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends, mentors, employers, etc... But on an existential level, I like what Neil DeGrasse Tyson said. "We are physically connected to the universe. We are chemically connected to the Earth, and we are biologically connected to each other." What more meaning do you want?
The meaning of life is to EVOLUTE. An endless process, where everyone is (and must be) searching ALL THE TIME, in every single aspect of life, simple or complex.
What a brilliant man. We all live and die in a meaningless universe, perhaps among an infinite number of universes. On a macro scale there is no meaning, but in our micro scale we can find meaning through work and love and that is as good as it gets.
If we start looking for outside reason then we live either in fear or we go lazy & insane. it has to be quest for excellence originating from deep place inside may be intensified by external existence. michio kaku a man of high intellect & good heart.
I love this guy. Unlike most scientists and physicists, he's fun. I dont know about religion, even though I was raised in the heart of the bible belt, I've always questioned the idea of organized religion. In truth I've always believed in a creator since it is nearly impossible, mathmatically speaking, for life as we know it to exist in an analog universe. yes, I'm saying I think we exist in a digital simulated universe. But who cares? We are all self aware individuals with at least some degree of free will. We must conform to certain laws of physics but that is written into the code and cant be changed by us, at least not yet. We are also made of nothing more than energy at the most basic level and that is a fact. Our self awareness is another matter entirely. Once we develop quantum technology it will change everything.
The answer is in the Quraan, God says in the Quraan: "And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play." 21:16 "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." 51:56 "Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?" 23:115 "Does man think that he will be left neglected?" 75:36
This interviewer is so right. Michio Kaku doesn't address Absurdism. He rationalizes by stopping at self-defined purpose. But that creates impossible conflicts in a purposeless world. As an intellectual not faced with such examples, he does not have to account for those scenarios.
+Sage Mantis It seems like people have too much time on this earth and then start coming up with weird philosophical "meanings of life", while it is just very simple and obvious. Is there inherent reason to life? Answer: no. And no, no extra shit. This video could and should have been 2 seconds long.
work and love, that is your life. a little bit simplistic in my opinion. but that is how Physics' Professors divulge their knowledge to the laymen: in an equation-like slogan!
Generally Michio Kaku just pisses me off but I completely agree with him here. Meaning of life is a personal question and only ones self can even begin to answer this question.
Another brilliant perspective by Prof. Kaku. Thank you, it helped me to structure my thoughts. The question I am struggling with is: why life does life want to evolve and survive?
That life "wants" to evolve already is a misleading perspective. It does not want to evolve - it just evolved. And there also were many dead ends in evolution as well as mass extinctions. And whether Eucaryotes "want" anything or have a "survival instinct" certainly is debatable...
Stefan Thiesen Hi Stefan, thanks for your feedback. Well, if I observe nature I think that it is fair to say that the goal of nature is to let the most suitable DNA traits to survive across generations. Everything is built on this adaptive concept. We may argue if there is a "will" on its own or it just is, but it is a fact that the system is built to survive and evolve (or you may say it is the DNA that "wants" to survive). And why that? If life happened, why not to just "be" instead of evolving? Even Eukaryotes do strive to pass on their DNA (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eukaryote#Sexual_reproduction). I hope I was able to explain myself well enough.
Patrick Schaufelberger Daniel Naranjo The explanation is elemental and applies generally to everything. Things that are durable perdure, and things that are not durable don´t. This is a truism. This means that from all the things that come to existance, some will perdure more than others and therefore we will see, given some time, more of the former than of the latter. Everything in the universe therefore appears to "seek" stability. But it doesn´t really look for it, it´s just that those things that don´t enter stable configurations dissapear given enough time. Let´s apply this truism to different situations. *Classical physics* In physics this is call the "minimum energy principle". From all possible paths, things will select the path in space-time that minimizes Hamiltonian action, because other trajectories are less energy efficient. *Quantum physics* Of course the question that arises is "well, how do they know which path minimizes action?". The answer is simple, they don´t. All trajectories are realized _simultaneously_, and unstable ones cancel each other out while _stable ones tend to reinforce each other_. *Game Theory* Like in game theory. People who don´t cooperate and are just greedy get pushed out of the game fast (usually). People who cooperate but can retaliate in unjustice situations perform the best, becaus ethey are very stable give the context. *General overview* So basically, let´s look now at the whole picture. There are hundreds of elemental particles, but most of them disappear almost even before existing. The stable ones tend to group into protons, neutrons and electrons (plus the force carriers and neutrinos and stuff... but for simplicity let´s exclude those). So there is a natural selection of elemental particles completely correlated with stability and life time. So protons, neutrons and electrons get selected. Gravity makes being together more stable than not being together. In fact, it is a _cathalytic process_, because the more particles you attract the more particles you are likely to attract, and the process feeds itself. These forms stars, which are fueled by hydrogen (just an electron and a proton, and neutrons if you get the isotopes, deuterium and tritium). In stars, heavier atoms are formed, and when starts explode they configure themselves (again, by virtue of gravity) into planets and other stars. With heavy atoms now you can have more complexity, and therefore complex systems develop in the boundary of dissipative systems. Complex structures are just _efficient ways of dissipating energy_, which get selected more than those structures that dissipate ebergy inefficiently. After some fuss, planets get stable in different ways. In Earth, now, we have the water cycle, the rock cycle.... different stable, autocathalytic cycles that _feed themselves_ (positive feedback). Whithin the authocathalytic processes, there is a very stable one called self- replication. It is extremely sophisticated, and very complex. And very stable. So, some molecules develop autoreplicative systems, which keep getting more complex and more efficient through selection, and then complex environmnets keep getting more complex, thos eorganisms that adapt keep going, and those who don´t... die out. Everything is "alive". Everything is "fighting" for stability. Those things that are ill-suited for the situation (i.e., they don´t "seem to fight") were expelled from the competition long ago. Electrons and protons and neutrons are the top segment of the elementary particle pyramid. Their are the top of the food chain in that realm. Rocks and water are the bosses of the inorganic realm here on earth, they delevoped the more stable cycles. Of course they didn´t "develop them", it´s just all the other stuff that was being done was less stable. *Short answer* Life behaves as if it "wanted to live", because life forms that don´t behave like that died long ago. People who suicide at the age of 10 don´t get to have children. And life forms are not completely stable (definitive "versions" or something") becaus ethe environment is not stable. The Sun is dying out, heat income changes, radiation changes, the atmosphere changes because life is still evolving to full stability, which will never be reached because context changes all the time. Even slight changes become huge changes with time (we live in chaotic systems). Life in fact (like every other complex system) is fractal, and fractals live between order and chaos, in the frontier.
So Michio! I love this self-observer meaning, because it is more democratic and less dictatorial as to a unified theory solution. Perhaps there can be more than one equation set for everything.
To the point of meaning we are energy and the cosmos is energy it and we can change or do anything we want both good and bad anytime we want for as long as the energy is present. Thank you!!!!!!!! There is no such thing as nothing.
I wonder when Kuhn says the he thinks we are "close" to knowing everything, how in the cosmos he can even have an inkling that that is true. That is a "why" question that I'm curious about.
As to the "meaning" I referred to in the previous post, I do not propose any theistic origination to this. Meaning developed as a consequence of he construction of mathematics, which describes everything. I divide this description into 2 categories, logical (based on real numbers) , hence "durable logic", and illogical (based on imaginary numbers), or transitory logic. The classic world in built upon real numbers, therefore matter descriptions are fairly "durable", lasting trillions of years despite proton decay. The quantum world is based on imaginary numbers, as an expression of the square root of -1. The reason S. Gates has discovered an error correction algorithm within quantum mechanical expressions is due to the transitory nature of the truncated, though very useful arena of the mathematical bulk. The "weak" logic ( illogic ), of the functional source of the quantum world must be constantly refreshed with a "quantum patch" to keep re-starting it's fleeting series of existence. It starts, runs out of logic support, ends, then starts again, just as the virtual particles of space show their fleeting, continually replenished existences...
Prof. Kaku is perhaps an outstanding cosmologist, but he fails to provide a plausible explanation of how the so-called "self-discovery" of one's own life fits into the laws of physics, which almost entails the causal irrelevance of physics in determining life's meaning. Dr. Kuhn is not asking the normative question of life, but demanding a much deeper explanation of the interaction between our mental life and the physical laws. Questions to physicists should be reformulated as follow: How can "self-discovery" be carried out when the theory of special relativity describes space-time as a time block in which past, present and future does not exist? Where does "self-discovery" stand amid the uncertainty principles as described by quantum physics? We have all given too much hope on scientists to give explanations to these normative questions, when such tasks belong to metaphysicians and ontologists, who ponder over questions related to causation, supervenience, properties and time.
When Kuhn asks the why question he never really asks it in a concrete way. If the universe has meaning then the universe must be alive. Does a rock have meaning to itself? Can a rock have meaning to itself? Purpose and meaning imply life and a POV or God. Also when Kuhn says we are close to finding the ultimate answers, how can he make that assumption?
"yeah, i'm all for that, take care of the earth, take care of our families, that's fine..but at the end of the day it is kind of irrelevant" couldn't have said it better myself
By the way: The doctors answer does make sense, but people tend to want to believe that there is a meaning to life, since their struggle to give life a meaning must have a reason for doing so.. and the reward that follows..
He's like an example of what they were talking about - some people who want that email from heaven telling them the meaning of life. It's as if he expected Michio Kaku to reveal it or something!
On the other hand, when we're wondering whether or not near-death experience stories are objectively real, we're more interested in what neurologists and cardiologists have to say, and some of them say yes. For those interested in the research, Gideon Lichfield has written a review of the NDE studies for the Atlantic, and it can be read online,
In fact, there are scientists out there who have their personal opinions about life and all that is to it, but are afraid to speak it out load. Some may be so radical that they can quickly be ridiculed, not because it's a silly thought, but so radical that it goes against everything we see as "reasonable". A researcher who is emerging as very rational and agnostic in front of the tv- screen, can quickly be a very spiritual person privately.;) This i have experienced.
In short, the absence of objective meaning requires us to provide our own, subjective, meaning, so that we can live on with what is, perhaps, an illusion of meaningfulness in our pursuit for happiness.
One of the oldest scams is to collect tithe by telling people that they're born in sin & there's a better place after death, but to be saved a spot they must repent & believe the story that a dude was sacrificed 2000 years ago to forgive their sins.
Science teaches us about outside forces and things that can be measured and calculated but we must look internally, find out who we really are to create meaning for our lives.

Wow, clever, and special... At least keep in mind that the ice is made by other humans and it can be either good or bad quality... This ties in to what he's talking about in the video.
I really like this philosophy of life that Michio presented and that he takes roots in is thinking citing known atheist like Sigmund Freud. Another famous psychanalyst was Carl Gustav Jung and he believed in a God. Maybe not the god of religion as normaly presented, but he believed in something like a God. I
we have to find our own meaning in this life, is what i hear. but what if that is not morally accepted by most people? what if a thief find his meaning in steal things, a murderer in kill people? such thing exists. and a little bit deeper, if i am objectively those things are not bad. they just are. we think they are bad because they hurt us, why do we have the feeling it hurts us? who learned us what good and bad things are? according this video no one, we have to define for ourself (if i listened well, english is not my first language :) . i believe that someone has putt those information in us, like our dna. because it no one did it, it would not matter why there are such things as 'bad' and 'good'. (learning everyday, please be patience and respect me in your answer!)
Hey man, look up jacque fresco there is no purpose in life,, and all the other videos in the side bar about him and he will answer all your questions you asked.

"There is no objective, universal meaning only subjective, independent interpretations"
...that would seem like a pretty concise way to answer this question.
+Morpheus X I would say 'interdependent' and then yes, it's a pretty good answer.
'...no universal meaning....' Utimately that may be so, but practically we need a shared meaning for society to function. How is a shared meaning between people to be arrived at? Also, how do you pick your meaning from those on offer?
@@arthurwieczorek4894 “a shared system of meaning” is one definition of culture :)
Michio Kaku isn't just smart...he's wise...wiser than I'd realized
Definitely, same here.
Man I really enjoyed Kaku explanations. He broke down complex information in such understandable way. I still believe in that GREAT BOOK THOUGH.
this interviewer is amazing
I've never seen michu speak so beautifully.
Great interview.
(comment Part#1)
I liked this video. But I gotta say something!
I like it when Dr.Michio says:"All of us are born with certain talents,
certain abilities & we have to reach the maximum of our capabilities &
potential to make the world a better place... to make sure we leave the
universe(the world) a better place than we first entered"
"we have to create our own meaning....it is a process of self-discovery"
Resolution is practically gameboy
Richard Feynman was absolutely awesome.
Great words of wisdom from such a talented scientist!
Meaning of the universe, reason, etc.are aimed at evolution which not only delivers without fail, and in which I am an active participant, purpose is the word. The purpose of evolution is to ensure life and intelligence to evolve. For whom you may ask. For you and me-!!!

Beyond the big bang everything is speculation, and humans feel this connection with what can be called an universal program, you call "one big organism".
From such realizations a responsibility towards evolution, will result in steps that will preserve the environment, which is terminally threatened, while half the world does not even care.
3MonkeesInDenial
The complicated genome that drives our evolution is preceded by yet another simpler genome for the evolution of the inorganic world of stars and black holes, fine tuned enough to produce elements, molecules, organic molecules, amino acids etc. and on to life and intelligence.
Like a caterpillar into a butterfly we just take longer
To spread through out the cosmos before the next cataclysmic event wipes out life on earth. That's the meaning of life.
Michio Kuku I truly love this video clips, all your answers were right to the point.
Jazzy kat2015 I looked into the book and ordered it on Amazon, looks interesting. Thanks for the recommendation!
You're very welcome.
+Benjamin Babeshkin would it be safe to say that you settled on naturalism as a worldview?
+coachmarc2002 Ontological naturalism, and panpsychism. Or a more understandable version would be an Agnostic/Atheist /Zen Buddhist. A realization that life, matter, energy, consciousness and reality are all connected in some way, but ultimately they all have a scientific explanation. No need for the supernatural.
Watching the first episode.. refreshing
Brilliant,We need to work and to love. Michio kaku nail it.
42!!!! Best answer ever and the source of the question is even better!
Michio Kaku is a leader in getting "Closer To Truth"!
Well said....... as always. I have the utmost respect for Michio Kaku, and it is always not only interesting but refreshing to hear him speak the truth. ;) thanks for posting this video!
"There is no equation up in the sky" says Michio in this clip and few years later he writes a book called The God Equation. :o)))
Well, when speaking of meanings of somethings, it's about how the experience not how to define them. Good point of Dr. Michio Kaku.
The point of life is simple. To seek God and develop a relationship with him spirituality. It's not hard. We're here because of his love. He's growing his family.
In other words the answer is no. As far as we can tell meaning only derives from beings intelligent enough to create it or care about it.

King Willie
I still love that movie, and King Willie was a remarkable figure in it.
Why does he piss you off exactly? I find he's a great teacher. Very clear and concise.
Best physicist ever
1) The "the most commonplace non-religious response" is also the most apt one
2) Well, even Kuhn could be said to be running away from the answer by refuting it; but that would not be accurate, would it?
Life is the reason and life is not a question but a lesson. Without life, the universe has no meaning. We are the reason and though our place in the cosmos might look insignificant, in time, we could become the dominant force. We have the potential to become immortal beings controlling the universe. Expanding to new universes and maybe even creating them.
fine probing interview and fine answers.
On one level, I agree with that totally! Very good.

Nice comments Dr. Kaku; congrats!
Funny and brilliant comment. Loved it!

Thou shall not- etc. etc.)_
My own solution to that is _"Live your life, as your personal challenge."_ Because _'destroying'_ (vandalism, murder, etc.) is by all means _'easy'._ Quite literally within minutes of me clicking "Post" on my comment, I could go out and become a mass-murderer or render several blocks of people homeless by burning their houses to the ground if I wanted to, but I do not, because that would be _"the easy thing"._ Instead, I view- and prefer life to be a challenge.
I have a short answer for meaning of life.....God said "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me."Surat Adh-Dhāriyā Verse (51:56)
Thanks a lot to Dr.Michio Kaku for this beautiful discussion
How can they know if they can never leave the matrix?
what makes you think the universe has a meaning or purpose for that matter?
The only meaning the universe has is what we give it. We create our own meaning.
Outside the Matrix would STILL be 'The Universe'. The universe is all there ever was, all that is & all that will ever be -regardless of whether we can detect it.
*****
I can sympathize with Kaku saying: You want to become a better person, you have to inspect yourself. There won't be a user manual.
That's a good philosophy
One of the potential answers for meaning in idealism is to have experiences, which are in themselves, particular bits of knowledge. Knowledge is the ultimate purpose. Through us, the universal consciousness gains knowledge of itself.
Good video. "YOU" have to look for meaning. I like it.
Yes I Agree!!! The Meaning of Life is to give Life Meaning!!!!! Thank You!!!! Cheers!!!
We are chemically connected to the Earth, and we are biologically connected to each other."
What more meaning do you want?
I like his angle on alien life of course there is we are composed of the same elements as the universe I'm not arrogant enough to think I'm it
The meaning of life is to EVOLUTE.
An endless process, where everyone is (and must be) searching ALL THE TIME, in every single aspect of life, simple or complex.
i love Michio Kaku. He is awsome
The answer is in the Quraan, God says in the Quraan: "And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play." 21:16
"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." 51:56
"Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?" 23:115
"Does man think that he will be left neglected?" 75:36
just now saw his discussion with Freeman about Entropy. A slight contradiction here ?
i like the idea that our reason for being here is so the cosmos can see and discovery itself through us
"Your purpose in life, has to conform with the laws of physics" I wonder how Robert was trying to convey at that time !
I thought the answer to universe and everything (meaning of life) was 42.
Bro you should eat mentos and drink pepsi and the result is the meaning of ur life
Excellent answer.. And in my own struggle to understand just what the hell I am.. It makes sense..
What else is there religion. Lol
Generally Michio Kaku just pisses me off but I completely agree with him here. Meaning of life is a personal question and only ones self can even begin to answer this question.
To Me It's About The Experience For Good Knowledge & Wisdom
Another brilliant perspective by Prof. Kaku. Thank you, it helped me to structure my thoughts. The question I am struggling with is: why life does life want to evolve and survive?
let me know when you find out because ive been thinking on that one a long time
Daniel Naranjo Sure I will, I suspect that it might take a while though ;)
*Classical physics*
In physics this is call the "minimum energy principle". From all possible paths, things will select the path in space-time that minimizes Hamiltonian action, because other trajectories are less energy efficient.
*Quantum physics*
Of course the question that arises is "well, how do they know which path minimizes action?". The answer is simple, they don´t. All trajectories are realized _simultaneously_, and unstable ones cancel each other out while _stable ones tend to reinforce each other_.
*Game Theory*
Like in game theory. People who don´t cooperate and are just greedy get pushed out of the game fast (usually). People who cooperate but can retaliate in unjustice situations perform the best, becaus ethey are very stable give the context.
*General overview*
So basically, let´s look now at the whole picture.
*Short answer*
Life behaves as if it "wanted to live", because life forms that don´t behave like that died long ago.
I think it's to find peace. For that I look at a flower. Lovely.
Who'd win in a cage fight? Michio Kaku vs.David Suzuki?
I wonder when Kuhn says the he thinks we are "close" to knowing everything, how in the cosmos he can even have an inkling that that is true. That is a "why" question that I'm curious about.
“Jeff Goldblum’s father, dressed in Jeff’s clothes, sits down with Michio Kaku”
I dont think the question "what is the meaning of the universe" makes any sense. it may mean a membrane in hyperspace... what does mean mean?
Thank you for some detailled and well written thoughts!!
What a refreshing break from the usual yt-comment-garbage. ;)
I really want to know what made you say that.
Michio, you da man.
Love and work are the keys to meaning according to Kaku.
Via Freud!
This is the kind of questions I would be asking this man myself, hell if I even had the chance.
"yeah, i'm all for that, take care of the earth, take care of our families, that's fine..but at the end of the day it is kind of irrelevant"
couldn't have said it better myself
By the way: The doctors answer does make sense, but people tend to want to believe that there is a meaning to life, since their struggle to give life a meaning must have a reason for doing so.. and the reward that follows..
He's like an example of what they were talking about - some people who want that email from heaven telling them the meaning of life. It's as if he expected Michio Kaku to reveal it or something!
Hi, how are you ☺️ ?
6:20 He´s absolutely right.
We have no hope :/
On the other hand, when we're wondering whether or not near-death experience stories are objectively real, we're more interested in what neurologists and cardiologists have to say, and some of them say yes. For those interested in the research, Gideon Lichfield has written a review of the NDE studies for the Atlantic, and it can be read online,
Michio rocks like always
Purpose is life. That is the prime equation and explains the "reason".
Anything you "think" of is possible.
There is no meaning. Have some ice cream and laugh now and then.

I really like this philosophy of life that Michio presented and that he takes roots in is thinking citing known atheist like Sigmund Freud. we have to find our own meaning in this life, is what i hear. but what if that is not morally accepted by most people? what if a thief find his meaning in steal things, a murderer in kill people? such thing exists. and a little bit deeper, if i am objectively those things are not bad. they just are. we think they are bad because they hurt us, why do we have the feeling it hurts us? who learned us what good and bad things are? according this video no one, we have to define for ourself (if i listened well, english is not my first language :) . i believe that someone has putt those information in us, like our dna. because it no one did it, it would not matter why there are such things as 'bad' and 'good'. (learning everyday, please be patience and respect me in your answer!)
