Once you go to Stravinsky's world, you don't want to get out. How wonderful combination of harmony and creative and playful dissonance he wrote for us!
When I first started to learn this in college I hated it with a passion. Then by the concert date I thought it was one the most beautiful pieces written and still feel that way 45-years later. How lucky I was the choir director chose it. I've loved Stravinsky ever since that time. I want to thank Thomas Somerville for such an experience. It was his first year teaching at USC and I'll never forget him.
I did this in high school with two other area schools and although I became a professional tenor later, I played trumpet in high school and was in the orchestra. The work had a deep impact on me but in hindsight I wish I had been in the chorus. I'm glad to hear the work had a significant and lasting impact on you. Your testimony to your director shows the importance of such people.
Hola/Ola.? "A" level music at high school back then......some Beethoven deaf period string quartets thrown in..!!! But..it is how you have learned/taught how to appreciate it and love it? 45 or so years since this side too!! I am strangely happy seeing the score in front of me! Peace from Kaapstad.
I had much the same reaction. I hated learning it but at some point, it all clicked and started to fall in place and it has become one of my more well-liked works to perform.
Same! We did this in UNC-Greensboro in 1990 or 1991 - I had had such a sheltered musical youth that this piece was just bizarre to me, so I just went through the motions of learning the part...now it's 2023 and I find myself going back to that memory as a fond one!
The second movement is so mindblowingly awesome. Gives me goosebumps every time! A fugue for winds and then continued counterpoint underneath the choir. Love it so much!
My older brother bought a recording of the Symphony of Psalms and it was my introduction to Stravinsky, whose music I have been in love with ever since. Sadly, none of the choirs I have sung with have performed it so I keep my vocal score in hope .....
Happily, I had the privilege of singing this a couple times. It is hair raising in a good performance. One of those performances was programmed with Vaughn Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem and, as top-notch as that piece is, it almost seemed like fluff beside this.
Could be that the texture totally lacks in violins and violas. I've enjoyed this work for over 30 years, but it wasn't until I saw a video performance on RUclips that I realized the orchestra is devoid of fiddles smaller than a cello.

Wonderful quote of Prokofiev. The Babi yar-symphony of Shostakovich sounds pretty similar. The time span is 32 years (Symphony of psalms written in 1930 and the 13th of Shostakovich in 1962).
Both are great pieces and share roots in Russian liturgical music and folk tradition, but for me one stands out as the bleakest utterance in the symphonic medium, with possible exception of his own 14th symphony, and one does not. The most noticeable influence I can hear on Babi Ya are Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death. Often, Shostakovich seems somewhat behind the times, but it's what he did in his symphonic cycle that counts.
This subject superates my english skills... Stravinsky’s work derives also from his piano sonata (1924), there are similarities in harmony and especially in the ”rhythm going backwards”. Shostakovich`s Babi Jar is without light, because it is a description of jewish being conducted into to their ravine, meanwhile the psalms are of course more mystical and hopeful. Stravinsky never was interested in such horrific things like mass murders or death. The both symphonies are fascinating but not for everyone. Thanks for mentioning Mussorgsky.
Thank you. For me, the surprise was that it was uploaded with the full conductor. I never read one, it's an interesting exercise. And yes, he should upload a version with the piano reduction for the singing part ^^ As long as this one stay too of course

Is that Stravinsky ending on a MAJOR CHORD? WHAT?
He has done that quite often though. Perhaps most notably in the Firebird suite - one of the most glorious major chords I can think of
Well you don't have any sounds more satisfying than a major triad, so ...
The 3rd movement ends with a big C unison (wich is disturbed by a Bb note from basses instruments)
Is there a sonority better than a major triad to represent God?
Many pieces of Stravinsky end with a major chord. Firebird, most notably.
12:52 Am I the only one who find really great the woodwinds part? Such a shame that Stravinsky didn't delevelop or point out that theme

me too.
Not sure about this work as yet. Love Stravinsky overall but this is a tough work .not serene, powerful yes but not very serene. Anyone love Messiaens L' Ascension?. That s well worth hearing as another Religious work of devotion. Regards from the Smack77 channel UK.
Look I am all for people trying to make money but you don't have to set it to where ads plague the entire thing, especially when this isn't even your own audio! Ridiculous..
@@jonathanlohn4376 I just remembered that Shostakovich made his own orchestration of the "Symphony of Psalms". Could not find it anywhere though.

First movement feels like it belongs in the introduction phase of a very long final boss fight.
dark soul favorite composer
why did stravinsky decide to say "fuck the clarinet"? I get omitting violin, but why the glorious clarinet and viola?
I make a point of not buying those items that are advertised.
Whoever puts add between movements of a composition like this deserved to be fired.

If a proper Berserk adaptation ever gets made, the first movement better be used as Father Mozgus' theme

I was surprised that this score video has not been uploaded until then.
Thank you. For me, the surprise was that it was uploaded with the full conductor. I never read one, it's an interesting exercise. And yes, he should upload a version with the piano reduction for the singing part ^^ As long as this one stay too of course
