skiing is easier to learn as a beginner (basically you are able to control after a lesson) but harder to learn and get really good. Snowboarding takes longer to learn as a beginner but is eaiser to get good. But honestly you guys should try again but take lesson first so you learn at least the basics and it will be much less scary! It is really fun and worth it.
