    @hi6747 Listening comprehension is hard! I don't slow down much, if at all, for my videos, so my users can get used to understanding everyday speech. Also, so they can hear an example of natural speech as their work on their pronunciation! That is why I have optional captions to go with the videos, to help you understand. :)
    Best,
    Rachel

    Check out my video on linking the TH, it might help!

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  13 лет назад

    @STYLERFELLA In this case you just need to do it in repetition. Take a word combination that is difficult for you, and to it as slowly as you need to do it right. Then increase speed over and over as an exercise, but never do it so fast that you're never doing it incorrect. Sometimes repetition isn't fun, but it's the only way to change habits!

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  11 лет назад

    The only way is slow and precise practice. Practice the position over and over! Then try it at the ends of words, then sentence fragments "truth of", "month of", etc. If you've lost the correct position, go back and drill the sound alone again.

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  11 лет назад

    It is the same mouth position as described in this video. If you're having difficulty, slow down and hold out the vowel before moving into the TH sound. Practice this way until the transition is more comfortable.

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  11 лет назад +1

    Usually unvoiced, but some people will make it voiced when it links into a voiced sound, especially a voiced TH (with them, for example).

    @xiaochenhao Did you see the video I just uploaded on linking the TH? It will help.

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  11 лет назад

    I think that works with unstressed words that begin with the voiced TH, but that it's impossible to make the voiced TH without the tongue tip between the teeth.

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  12 лет назад

    It's possible that it's contributing to the problem. Focus on the point of contact between: 1) the bottom of the top teeth and 2) the top of the very front part of the tongue. Then just let the jaw be relaxed, but don't worry about what the bottom teeth are doing.

    Well, the only way to be able to do it fast in a sentence is to be really comfortable and have it be a habit, which just comes from repetitious practice!

    It sounds like you're using your lips to make the sound rather than the tongue. I've had students do this as well. It's a hard habit to break, but repetitious training can certainly help. Watch yourself in a mirror---make sure your bottom lip isn't moving up. Touch your tongue tip to the bottom of your top teeth rather than your bottom lip.

    It also hs to do with lung capacity, I think. I always pronounce th the same way you taught, when the voice reaches ores' ears it sounds not'thick" so instead when I put the tip of my tongue behind the lower teeth, with upper teeth still biting the tongue,then it sounds a lot better.

    Hi, Rachel!!! I have a question. is this sound [θ] pronounced in these words (within, without, withdraw, withstand, withhold and et cetera ; where is the word with )or this [ð] one? They are pronounced differently in different dictionaries.

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  2 года назад

      Actually - 'with' can use the voiced OR unvoiced TH - so it's whichever you prefer. I've noticed it's more common to hear the unvoiced version. :)

  • @jayfilho18

    Thanks for the valuable information about Th sound. My advanced students of English love to watch your videos. Most phoneticians and speech pathologists, however, claim that tip or center of the tongue should barely touch the upper teeth. Only sides of the tongue should lightly contact them. Hence, the air would effortlessly travel through the center of the tongue. Would you agree with that? Greetings from Brazil.

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  8 лет назад +2

      +Jair Luiz Alves da Silva Filho Yes! I would. I would also recommend that the middle and back of the tongue be lower in the mouth and relaxed. The "effortless" quality of the air passing the tongue and teeth is imperative for a clear TH consonant sound.

    Thanks Rachel! You video is very helpful. Do you have one to differentiate the voice of "nn" and "ng"?

    Hey Rachel! Tell me what is the position of the tongue when we pronounce "to this" or "bathtub"? Is it the real 't' sound in there?

    Hey, people, a question for you all, how do you pronounce the word "with" and "with you". Do you pronounce the last one like "wicha" or "wichu"? For example," I will be wicha forever". Sounds good to you or not?

      @harrison805 8 лет назад

      +Aaron Bogatch It's just 'with' + 'you'. Try not add in any sounds but the ones that you need.

      Harrison Owen Really? So you should not say "I wanna be rich", you should say "I want to be rich". You should not say "I gonna asker", you should say "I'm going to ask her". You should not say "I shoulda toldim" you should say "I should have told him". And for your information, "withu/a" is not adding words, it's subtracting words, you fucking airhead!

      +Aaron Bogatch You were asking a question, and I responded. With 'him' and 'her', I recommend not emitting the 'h', but it's extremely common to use 'gonna' and 'wanna' etc. in casual conversation.

      I don't give a shit what you recommend. I will always say "I lover very much" or "I lovim very much". And I will always say "I wantcher love" (I want your love), "I needjer love" I need your love). Who are you? A Martian or what?

      Aaron Bogatch I think there's a misunderstanding. I was simply answering your question. Why did you ask if you didn't want a response?

    raphel, i am a speaker from hk.
    Why i hear native speakers sometimes say 'THink' like 'dink' but sometimes it's like voiced TH?

      ***** Really? I didn't know that. Most E teachers taught me pronounce "d" cuz this way looks like native speakers. Do native speakers think
      ''d" sound is stupid??? I mean in this case. Now, I'm confused.
