I have a few other games now that I admire more, but this beautiful game still belongs in my top 3 ever. This scene alone made me become a Sonic fan for years, and I’m so glad I’m not the only one that recognizes it’s absolute brilliance
Just by the opening cutscene you KNOW this is a game of sheer passion and love, and you also immediately know this game is going to be something special.
This is what made a Sonic fan out of me, a 6 year old kid who had never seen ANYTHING like it, having known nothing about Sonic prior. I would restart the game over and over just to admire the cutscene.
I feel like Sonic fans like this who care about the franchise should all come together to create the Sonic game the fans have been waiting for, Takashi Iizuka and Sonic Team need a break lol
With Unleashed I'll admit I was puzzled with the whole werehog thing, but I ended up going with it and had a good time. Seeing this cutscene again I can't help but wonder why can't we just get Sonic shows with action like this, rather whatever the hell Boom is supposed to be. It very easily gives the likes of Devil May Cry and run for its money in terms of action. Also an alternative song for that opening: Keel - Speed Demon
it's because this level of animation costs a LOT of money, im not sure how they were even able to afford something this nice looking even the best animated shows dont have animation like this because it just wouldn't be possible, the closest you'll get is like old japanese OVAs, but they dont really count since it's not like they aired on tv this is somethin youd see in like a disney movie
I love unleashed into and I am proud to say that sonic unleashed was my first sonic game. I have the into embedded into my memory for start to end and I love every bit of it. Unleasheds intro really is peak sonic and eggman.
This is my second video watching this guy and my god his title card, his transition are absolutely amazing and mad props. The video itself is amazingly well made and not only that it's less than 10 minutes and it goes straight to the point and I just can't get over how well made these videos are and its just magnificent my man!
im so glad someone finally talked about this, this opening is just so awesome and it was great to hear someone talk about everything it does right. i hope someone eventually makes a video on the egg dragoon boss fight in unleashed, since thats also pretty awesome. (btw you deserve way more subscribers and views than you currently have)
Funny thing you mentioned that! I’m gonna talk about the egg dragoon in a couple of future videos. It’s my favorite robot that he’s made, it works on every level, Narrative, gameplay, music, spectacle. Nice pfp btw
I remember watching this whole mini-movie with my mom when I was a kid and was about to play Sonic Unleashed and for an adult she looked impressed with this, even thought it looked cool. Hands down still the best Sonic cinematic ever. Wish modern sonic games had this quality in cinematic direction and animation.
My older brother was pretty uninterested in Sonic as we grew up, yet we still brought the PS2 disc wherever we went out of the house just to watch the opening cutscene (we didnt have internet so that was the only way to watch it). In fact, we did it so much to the point that he instantly recognised the opening background music when I randomly played it as an experiment. He also always tells me how hype he instinctively gets wherever he sees Super Sonic. This opening is timeless.
This cinematic is literally peak sonic and so pleasing to the eyes my favorite part of it has always been how they showed how fast he was going by seeing the sparks off his shoes and body
I love how it begins like a James Bond movie: It's the end of another adventure. We'll never play said adventure, but parts of it will seep into the current adventure, which is a lot more important then the other adventure we didn't play.
You'll wanna thank Marza Animation Planet for that. They were formed by Sega to handle the CG animation side of things but their more recent works actually include the Lupin the First CG movie. Check out the trailer for it if you haven't already. You can really see how their style from their Sonic stuff came out in the movements present in the trailer.
Sonic Unleashed was my first Sonic game. I was around 6 when I got it on the Wii. As a 6 year old with doodoo brain, I can safely say that everything mentioned under the purpose section of the video was something I could grasp. I really enjoy how nothing is spelled out for you too much, and its implicit nature allows it to feel like a movie, not a game. I love this cinematic a LOT!
As mainly an old school Sonic fan, it's rare for me to find anything modern Sonic related that isn't easy to dunk on or nitpick at, but this cutscene is a masterpiece and shows modern Sonic can be done right.
Came here to say the same tbh. I didn't even get to play this so just had my mind blown fresh this evening...why was it that Sega managed to walk away from this with "Fans don't like epic shit, they want hurr durr baldy mcnosehair and beating failed jokes to death"?
I love how you describe cutscenses! It's so funny 😆 I remember when I saw this cutscene for the first time. I was so amaized! Even now I feel like I am watching some movie instead of simple game opening. And it's better than anything in sonic games now, more than 10 years later... it's so sad.
Unleashed was actually my very first Sonic game when my sister bought it for the wii when I was about 11, and although I've never actually played the hd version the wii version was still an amazing introduction to the series. To this day (8 years later), it's still my favorite Sonic game, and definitely in my top three favorite games in general. Sonic is to this day my longest lasting hyperfixation (aside from maybe cats, since I can't remember when exactly that started), and although the series has definitely had its ups and downs, I've never outright disliked any of the games and/or stories. When done right, Sonic is such an amazing character, and Unleashed absolutely nailed that
It’s funny cause sonic unleashed was my first ever sonic game. So this cutscene was my introduction to the sonic universe. Way to start off with the best sonic opening
11 years later and this cutscene, still to this day, gives me major goosebumps, the editing makes it no better It's just scratches my brain in the best way possible, Unleashed deserved better
No cap, if an entire mainstream Sonic movie was in development with this level of CGI and nonstop action, I would totally be okay with not getting another game for at least the next half decade.
Great little analysis!! I truly, utterly love this cinematic for all the reasons you listed - Sonic Unleashed has been my favorite Sonic game since I was little. The animation is still gorgeous even by today's standards and the action is so cool... and of course, Sonic's first Werehog transformation is unforgettable. I can't help but heap praise onto Marza for giving us this and the tie-in short. I also agree about Unleashed's tone and how it portrays Sonic - something I always appreciated about the game was how the stakes were definitely high and things could get pretty bleak, but Sonic and Chip's journey is still a fun one; serious overarching plot, but able to have levity. Same goes for how Sonic's written: he's still cocky and able to goof off a little, but he takes stuff seriously, and his maturity and kindness shows through in how he treats Chip and the people in his world. It's really nice. But yeah, sorry for blabbering on in your comments. Thanks for the video!
This cutscene was one of my first introductions to Sonic, back when I had no idea who Sonic was. The music and animation blew my tiny 9 year old and I can confidently say that Sonic Unleashed is the reason I'm a sonic fan today. Brilliant summary and analysis! Also points to this video for the smooth as hell transitions and editing.
Unleashed was my first Sonic game, even though I didn't became a fan at the time nor finished it, actually I only played like... 4 stages and I gave up because I was a terrible gamer.... BUT THE INTRO, THE STAGES, THE MUSIC omg the MUSIC everything stuck with me, it inspired me for years . Unleashed is and will aways be in my heart...

THANK YOU for highlighting why this is probably the best if not one of the best cutscenes/openings to a videogame period. Oh how I miss the ambition and scale of what Sonic was. So.. i just watch an entire marathon of every vídeo in this channel And you are amazing dude, this videos describe perfectly my feelings towards the series I grew up with every Sonic game in the Gamecube, main games and collections I have dreamed about Sonic Adventure 3, an open world game with the Chaotix with a new villain that puts them to the test as detectives A game for only Team Dark I cannot stop thinking about your ideas for a Silver game (Silver and Shadow would make a great teacher and student dynamic) And i'm being dreaming about the main games being remade To connect everything from Sonic 1 to Unleashed Imagine Sonic 1 starting with a prologue about the emeralds being created by the Gaias to keep balance But after the Chaos accident with the Echidna tribe, the Gaias acended Angel Island to the sky, and after the incident with the people of West Side Island, the Gaias just removed the Chaos Emeralds from the dimension, so no one has seen the Emeralds in ages until Sonic brought them back in Sonic 1; with that explanation i would elaborate on... Maybe that's why they made the Chaos Drives in the Ark, there are murals from ancient tribes, so the scientists tried to make them by themselves (an unlimited source of power) And.. the same explanation Could fill the plot hole of "Why Black Doom asked Gerald for the Chaos Emeralds?, Couldn't he just search for himself?" Because even tho he send Troops to search (Glyphic Canyon) the Emeralds just weren't there Heck, what if the purpose of the Black Arms was to harness an endless supply of energy inside the planet which turns out to be Dark and Light Gaia but they don't know (and neither does the cast, that would be for the player to figure it out) I want to see Flashbacks of how was Shadow's life in the Ark And i want scenes that show Gerald's first contact with the Black Arms Picture this: Gerald and his team are exploring inside Angel Island more precisely, Hidden Palace, this was before finding the mural of Super Sonic (maybe the organic Ultimate Lifeform) But after creating the Artificial Chaos in base of the murals for Chaos in the Mystic Jungle and after starting the prototype of the Biolizard since María was already sick and Gerald used Lizard's regenerating cells to probably make a cure Now with all that stated, The Black Comet passes around the earth, it cannot enter the athmosfere due to being very slow, so Black Doom sends the Sky Troops to investigate and the Artificial Chaos the team has as security start to overreact, once Gerald goes to the surface he makes a deal with Black Doom, they give him Black Arms DNA, with that the Ark's crew creates Chaos Drives and updates the GUN robots and Artificial Chaos designs, after getting to know the Emeralds history Black Doom in return asks for them when the comet returns in 50 years (i would like to put Black Doom's thoughts about West Side Island, how he begins to hate earth's people when he discovers that some killed the people of it's own kind for power lust, so BD decides to "save" the planet from themselves by killing them and harnesing the inside energy when he returns entering the Black Comet with Chaos Control) They made Shadow, BD gets a messanger for the future and Gerald finishes the project After the Black Comet leaves, someone finds the abandoned ships in Glyphic Canyon and the ships are creating merciless beasts killing everything, so.... Doubting BD's intentions, Gerald makes the Eclipse Cannon Uffffff. I spend a lot of time writting this In the end, the remakes would: Fix the plot holes - Expand the lore - Connect everything Side note: for a Shadow remake i would make it a single linear story that uses every level, maybe starting at Westopolis, hitting rock bottom in the first third at Gun's Fortress and regaining the earth against the Black Arms Sonic Forces style, ending all at the Comet itself (keeping Shadow as a hero) Dude, your vídeos are awesome and inspire me to think this kind of topics Grettings from México Sorry for my English
Holy shot dude! Some of the things you wrote are uncanny to my “Timeline” script. It’s weird, i’ll make sure to mention you in that video when i get to it so you don’t think that i’m just ripping you off. Gerald basing the biohazard of the chaos mural in the water palace, and then scraping it when it’s not optimal. Then he sees sonic’s mural on angel island, and gathering chaos energy from the master emerald in these things he made called “chaos drives”. After making a deal with black doom for his blood in exchange for the emeralds, he makes the eclipse canon to kill those mfs 50 years later. Now I’m skipping over a TON of stuff right now, the point is that our viewpoints are very similar. The only difference being that I don’t think you took Iizuka’s “two worlds” thing under consideration. (judging by the Gaia and chaos relationship.) And listen, I COMPLETELY understand, i hate the two worlds thing just as much as the next guy, but i prefer to work with what i’m given. Anyway, Thank you so much for the love man, I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!
@@ALtheBoi Well first of all, thanks a lot dude, it would be an honor And second, working with the 2 Worlds concept it's really admirable Your points sound very solid and i'm definitely looking forward to that video Just shows how much depth there is to Sonic's world Keep up the great work bro

The music, the animation and detail, the action, the voice acting, the pacing, everything about this cutscene is perfect. Truly peak Sonic.
I always thought this opening scene was criminally underrated, as Sonic Unleashed in itself. Really glad to see someone bring attention to it
Eggman really needs to learn that sonic doesn't take fall damage
This is what made a Sonic fan out of me, a 6 year old kid who had never seen ANYTHING like it, having known nothing about Sonic prior. I would restart the game over and over just to admire the cutscene.
1:03 I didn't even realize his mech was synced with his movements, amazing!
I feel like Sonic fans like this who care about the franchise should all come together to create the Sonic game the fans have been waiting for, Takashi Iizuka and Sonic Team need a break lol
Sonic Manía happened
Let's hope Shonen Sonic comes back with the fans
it's always nice to see someone who doesn't just blindly shit on iizuka.
Hugo Flores foreal💯
AL The Boi and I’m all about truth💯 that’s why lol
Yeah we need Shonen Sonic to come back
With Unleashed I'll admit I was puzzled with the whole werehog thing, but I ended up going with it and had a good time. Seeing this cutscene again I can't help but wonder why can't we just get Sonic shows with action like this, rather whatever the hell Boom is supposed to be. It very easily gives the likes of Devil May Cry and run for its money in terms of action.
Also an alternative song for that opening: Keel - Speed Demon
it's because this level of animation costs a LOT of money, im not sure how they were even able to afford something this nice looking
even the best animated shows dont have animation like this because it just wouldn't be possible, the closest you'll get is like old japanese OVAs, but they dont really count since it's not like they aired on tv
this is somethin youd see in like a disney movie
I love unleashed into and I am proud to say that sonic unleashed was my first sonic game.
I have the into embedded into my memory for start to end and I love every bit of it.
Unleasheds intro really is peak sonic and eggman.
same
This is my second video watching this guy and my god his title card, his transition are absolutely amazing and mad props.
That intro still gave me 2-3 goosebumps with just how cinematic it is
2:26 is peak humour 😭
Animation from 2008 is better than most stuff today
Absolutely the peak of Sonic.
This has got to be one of the best videos I have ever seen about Unleashed, ever. THIS IS SO GOOD please do more of these holy shit!
Shit dawg, thanks for the kind words!
Amazing Intro!! Brings back so many memories as a kid, when i first saw it!
I can’t tell you how many times I come back to ur videos the commentary, the editing, the analyzing and understanding of sonic is just *chef kiss*
I teared up a bit towards the end, then I laughed at the "You lost"
Sonic Unleashed is an example of what happens when passion comes to life in a video game
This cinematic is literally peak sonic and so pleasing to the eyes my favorite part of it has always been how they showed how fast he was going by seeing the sparks off his shoes and body
sonic’s “im getting chucked into space” scream gives me CHILLS
I love how it begins like a James Bond movie:
It's the end of another adventure. We'll never play said adventure, but parts of it will seep into the current adventure, which is a lot more important then the other adventure we didn't play.
I've said this before and I'll say it again praise whichever person at sega animated the unleashed opening.
Lupin is fucking 👌👌👌👌👌👌
Sonic Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game, the graphics, Jason Griffith's Sonic voice, the music. This game is the best 3D Sonic game.
Facts
5:04 omg someone in the internet who doesn't shit on this masterpiece.oh and your first entry to youtube was a fantastic video 10/10 would watch again
What do you mean lmao. Most people enjoy this game.
This is literally the greatest and most wholeome/relatable video I will ever find on RUclips.
11 years later and this cutscene, still to this day, gives me major goosebumps, the editing makes it no better
It's just scratches my brain in the best way possible, Unleashed deserved better
This intro was the truly the best and you pretty much nailed why
No cap, if an entire mainstream Sonic movie was in development with this level of CGI and nonstop action, I would totally be okay with not getting another game for at least the next half decade.
4:03 I KNOW RIGHT ?!!!
Your editing is nuts man wow
Flattered, thanks.
Unleashed will always have a place in my heart, one of the sonic game i had. You made me want to play it again.
HAVE TO subscribe now.. Unleashed opening is way past awesome...Great work dude
Thanks and Welcome!
Even when someone is talking over it, I still get goosebumps from this intro.
I loved Sonic Unleashed and remembered playing it on my cousins wii when i was a kid lol
Unleashed for LIFE!!!
I'm one of the lucky few who had this cutscene as my first exposure to sonic
2:21 Oh, shit, you got married? When? 😂😂😂 love you
Maaaan I really enjoy your content!
Happy to hear that!
I have always loved Unleashed intro, but now i understand why
Mannnn, you are simply on fire, amazing video after amazing video! I hate that good ol' RUclips didn't notify me of this nor the Silver video sooner, but GREAT bloody work! THANK YOU for highlighting why this is probably the best if not one of the best cutscenes/openings to a videogame period. Oh how I miss the ambition and scale of what Sonic was. Stellar video as always man, I can't wait to see you make it BIG!
Thank you man! my “How to Fix”s are getting decent views at least, that’s pretty cool I would say.
Your editing is so good man also everything you said is true this game has so much heart and soul put into its outstanding this will always be my favorite game
Unleashed was my first sonic game, didn't know him before this, saw this intro and absolutely loved it, i loved it so much that everytime i played the game i didn't skipped it
So.. i just watch an entire marathon of every vídeo in this channel
And you are amazing dude, this videos describe perfectly my feelings towards the series
I grew up with every Sonic game in the Gamecube, main games and collections
I have dreamed about Sonic Adventure 3, an open world game with the Chaotix with a new villain that puts them to the test as detectives
A game for only Team Dark
I cannot stop thinking about your ideas for a Silver game (Silver and Shadow would make a great teacher and student dynamic)
And i'm being dreaming about the main games being remade
To connect everything from Sonic 1 to Unleashed
Imagine Sonic 1 starting with a prologue about the emeralds being created by the Gaias to keep balance
But after the Chaos accident with the Echidna tribe, the Gaias acended Angel Island to the sky, and after the incident with the people of West Side Island, the Gaias just removed the Chaos Emeralds from the dimension, so no one has seen the Emeralds in ages until Sonic brought them back in Sonic 1; with that explanation i would elaborate on...
Maybe that's why they made the Chaos Drives in the Ark, there are murals from ancient tribes, so the scientists tried to make them by themselves (an unlimited source of power)
And.. the same explanation
Could fill the plot hole of "Why Black Doom asked Gerald for the Chaos Emeralds?, Couldn't he just search for himself?"
Because even tho he send Troops to search (Glyphic Canyon) the Emeralds just weren't there
Heck, what if the purpose of the Black Arms was to harness an endless supply of energy inside the planet which turns out to be Dark and Light Gaia but they don't know (and neither does the cast, that would be for the player to figure it out)
I want to see Flashbacks of how was Shadow's life in the Ark
And i want scenes that show Gerald's first contact with the Black Arms
Picture this:
Gerald and his team are exploring inside Angel Island more precisely, Hidden Palace, this was before finding the mural of Super Sonic (maybe the organic Ultimate Lifeform)
But after creating the Artificial Chaos in base of the murals for Chaos in the Mystic Jungle and after starting the prototype of the Biolizard since María was already sick and Gerald used Lizard's regenerating cells to probably make a cure
Now with all that stated, The Black Comet passes around the earth, it cannot enter the athmosfere due to being very slow, so Black Doom sends the Sky Troops to investigate and the Artificial Chaos the team has as security start to overreact, once Gerald goes to the surface he makes a deal with Black Doom, they give him Black Arms DNA, with that the Ark's crew creates Chaos Drives and updates the GUN robots and Artificial Chaos designs, after getting to know the Emeralds history Black Doom in return asks for them when the comet returns in 50 years (i would like to put Black Doom's thoughts about West Side Island, how he begins to hate earth's people when he discovers that some killed the people of it's own kind for power lust, so BD decides to "save" the planet from themselves by killing them and harnesing the inside energy when he returns entering the Black Comet with Chaos Control)
They made Shadow, BD gets a messanger for the future and Gerald finishes the project
After the Black Comet leaves, someone finds the abandoned ships in Glyphic Canyon and the ships are creating merciless beasts killing everything, so.... Doubting BD's intentions, Gerald makes the Eclipse Cannon
Uffffff. I spend a lot of time writting this
In the end, the remakes would: Fix the plot holes - Expand the lore - Connect everything
Side note: for a Shadow remake i would make it a single linear story that uses every level, maybe starting at Westopolis, hitting rock bottom in the first third at Gun's Fortress and regaining the earth against the Black Arms Sonic Forces style, ending all at the Comet itself (keeping Shadow as a hero)
Dude, your vídeos are awesome and inspire me to think this kind of topics
Grettings from México
Sorry for my English
(judging by the Gaia and chaos relationship.)
And listen, I COMPLETELY understand, i hate the two worlds thing just as much as the next guy, but i prefer to work with what i’m given.
Anyway, Thank you so much for the love man, I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!
@@ALtheBoi
Well first of all, thanks a lot dude, it would be an honor
And second, working with the 2 Worlds concept it's really admirable
Your points sound very solid and i'm definitely looking forward to that video
Just shows how much depth there is to Sonic's world
Keep up the great work bro
Forgot to comment about this when it came out but your editing got a lot better, neat job!
Bro i literally feel like im watching a 1 hour cinema like this is the best im never getting tired of it
3:37 super sonic.exe??
I have to agree. This is my favorite opening to any video game.
The editing for this video is excellent, especially the section points intros
Much appreciated!
“Oh that’s a palace, it looks beautiful.”
God I forgot just how incredible this cutscene is. We need more stuff like this in the games
I love this. You know how to explain this better than any of my teachers could ever explain stuff like this.
I’m also very intrigued by your editing style.
Defo underrated.
Hey bro it's always nice to see a sonic unleashed enjoyer.
Ok so I just want to say that I completely agree with what is said in this video and I also want to say that SU is one of the best Sonic games that have ever been made, I don't even care if the gameplay is not the best just the fact that this game is as old as it is and it had such good graphics and sound design just leaves me speechless, I got this game for PS2 and the moment I started the game and I saw the opening cutscene I marveled at it and immediately loved this game. I honestly believe that this game is one hell of a masterpiece that SEGA created and well I could get into the character that SEGA created for Sonic but I guess it's already pretty well described in other comments. This game is an absolute masterpiece.
I watched that cutscene hundreds of times.
you make some really good content for such a small channel. i hope your channel blows up in the future :)
That’s very kind of you, thanks!
Thanks for all of the content that you give us AL.
Thank you for the support.
5:08-5:36 Unleashed is also my fav too You explained perfectly why i think Sonic's personification is best in this game.
this was my first sonic game, This intro cutscene is so peak media that its literally the only thing i remember about this game
YES. Yes to everything about this 💕💕💕
I love this opening cutscene it’s really awesome and badass
I've watched all of your vids and boy i'm so sorry but i'm so emotional right now
Thank you for reminding me of HOW MUCH I LOVE UNLEASHED AND HOW MUCH I LOVED AND STILL LOVE THIS ANIMATION
And how much I still care about this stupid Blue Hedgehog even to this day
Really
Thank you
you will reach a 100,000 soon buddy, keep making quality videos like these .
That outro.. amazing bro
Holy shit I didn't realize you only had 2K subscribers until five minutes into the video. Instant subscribe, you deserve better.
Thanks, Welcome aboard!
So amazing. Beautifully amazing. So cinematic
even after watching sonic the hedgehog 3 movie this scene is still the best capturing sonic
Watching the unleashed opening is like looking at a mountain.
This video was recommended to me many times but I ignored it because I already knew what made this opening great. After a watch, you put it into words perfectly. This is Sonic The Hedgehog. 💙
I see this is a relatively recent and small channel, but I'm enjoying these quick analysis videos on the Sonic series (anything talking about Unleashed I'm watching lol). Are there any other games/media you plan to talk about later in the future?
Yes actually, branching out with a second channel focused on more varied media is something I've thought of!
