  • He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

El Cid was open minded in a time in which heresy was death.

Can we at least acknowledge that Alfonso, for all his later flaws, *did* legit watch Rodrego's back in that fight and prevent fully armored knights from exploiting the Cid while he was already engaging multiple knights? While he was their PRISONER, no less?

08:06 "What kind of a man ARE you?" asks Alfonso, aghast, after seeing Rodrego lay a dozen armed men out like tackle dummies. Can you blame him?

Okay, if you're going to divide your kingdom so that all your children get something after you die you should at least let your children know what the plan is before you kick the bucket. That way, no one gets surprised and/or pissed off. Seriously, Ferdinand really dropped the ball with this.

Sancho and Alphonso set to at their dad’s funeral was quite mild to what actually happened in the period. Sancho IV of Pamplona (Navarre) was ran off a cliff by his siblings.

Alfonso took out at least three of them himself. Was this a foreshadowing of him finally “conquering himself” years later in the eyes of the Cid, and becoming king of all Spain? What a great movie!

My guess is that 13 soldiers would be terrified to fight the most notable champion in all of Spain. That alone would make it quite easy for El Cid to blunt force trauma a few of the less mindful ones down and the rest fleeing as a result. =D

No disrespect to this movie which I think is awesome and is a childhood favourite of mine, but I'e recently been watching Spartacus and have to say that the blood effects are a joke. I still live the movie!!!
