  • White-fronted Geese know exactly when the Arctic is ice-free in spring. Only then they fly north and spend the summer in Siberia.
Scientists led by Martin Wikelski from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, Germany, equip the animals with transmitters and draw on the routes of the geese. In this way, they not only learn how the birds find their target and pass on their navigational skills to their young. The geese tell the researchers also how the environment in their habitat changes. In inaccessible Siberia such information is otherwise difficult to obtain.
In the future ,the satellite-based Icarus-system will help scientists to observe animals and their migrations worldwide. (Author: Sandra Müller, www.radio-machen.de)
