Its fantastic the preparation joe is putting into this. Hes trying to respect eddie but not trying to replicate him, which will be interesting to the audience as the band wont come across as a tribute act. Should be a great tour

All he needs is a Peavey 5150, which will be critical to pull off the high-gain materials tone well. If he wants the Marshal Plexi sound for earlier Van Hagar, without taking out a real vintage Marshall plexi, Suhr SL series seem to be the best option, variac circuit even built in... Striani's signature guitars, and specifically his signature pickups have been very different from EVHs over the years... In the end, he's be Satch playing Van Halen. People want to hear Satriani's style coming through... I think Matteo Mancuso playing You Really Got Me is an example of how a really great artist with their own signature style should approach Van Halen's material. It has to be amazing but be your own thing at the same time.

FYI…. His Ds1 was a gift from Steve many years ago. It was actually modded by Robert Keely before anyone ever knew who Robert was. Thats why his ds1 sounded as good as it did. Get a seeing eye modded ds1 and you’ll see. Vai used one on his board before his Ibanez pedal was made. Which is basically 2 modded ds1’s.

The people want Phil X for the VH tribute. He's the best guy for the job IMO.

What I'd like to see is these G3 Masters introduce the next Generation. G3.2?
Could I request Taj Farrant to help kick this off?

i totally comprehend the metaphor of surfing with the alien..at that time i was in a band with this other guitarist who would pay to learn satriani solos...but parroting other peoples stuff like that is not gunna cut it , y gotta BE playing like that , not just playin by rote...i traded in my big heavy tube stack ,and now im tryin to break in a katana..
i just couldnt lift the quadbox anymore, but gear is a big part of y sound f sure..

Nobody on the planet has sold more instrumental rock records than Joe, so those who are telling him what to do and how to proceed with his art are wasting their time.

C'mon, Joe, you know to get real Edward tone. Not pedals, no preamp gain.
A cranked late 60's JMP Super Lead. Maybe use an eq pedal boosting mids, but thats it.
Edward never ran up to kick on a boost or overdrive pedal.....
I got a a couple Germino 68 Plexi replicas, a load box and now every day is Christmas Day.
My hi gain amps gather dust.
Pop in a JB and away you go...and have what a DS-1 is trying to mimic.

Your playing is so mid bro no offence and your tone is far from Eddie’s😢 too compressed, a stifled high end, and just flat your harmonics are almost nil.

Joe, with all due respect, what you need to do is practice your ass off and nerd out over the playing nuances, not the gear. It's like 10% the gear and 90% the player. You're probably the most famous guitar teacher in the world and you know this. There's no shortcuts. You gotta put in the time and no gear is going to replace time. It wouldn't matter if you somehow managed to borrow Eddie's real Marshall from Wolfy. You gotta put in the time and work. Good luck!
