  • Based on the tragicomedy movie Don't Look Up (NetFlix), I'll explain how to DISCOVER and PHOTOGRAPH a comet from your backyard. The video holds the following sections:
    0:00 Intro
    0:25 What is a comet?
1:41How do comets come towards Earth?
2:35 What are the different parts of a comet?
3:49 How can I find a comet in the sky?
4:58 How can I find a comet with a backyard telescope?
6:08 How can I take a picture or video of a comet?
    8:10 Final thoughts
    ERRATA:
I meant to say that long-period comets from the Oort cloud will orbit the sun from 200 up to 250000 years. And comet Neowise was visible in 2020, not 2021, time flies!

Really enjoyed the video, really enjoyed the movie too. I managed to photograph 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in early November with just a DSLR and 250mm lens but never even got a glimpse of Leonard.

Comets are probably the only thing that make me wish I had gone for an OSC instead of monochrome. Did you manage to see comet Leonard?

Nope, nothing but cloudy nights since December. It's visible in the southern hemisphere now.

@@AstroForumSpace Gotta love the Dutch weather. The forecast has been teasing clear skies, but it has always ended up foggy here in Leiden.

Hi Wido, I would to know how your currently coping with polar aligning your SkyWatcher eq6 R pro?.. is it still an issue for you now or did you find a work around?

Hi Robbie, I assume that you're referring to the lever at the back of the EQ6R Pro? I replaced that lever with a knob, much easier to move the RA/DEC now. I should make new videos about my progress but the skies have been cloudy for about 2 months straight now. Usually, somewhere mid February we will have our first clear skies of the year in western europe, lol.

@@AstroForumSpace Thanks Wido, I would be interested in where you sourced that knob from, as I may decide to buy the same mount... very tempted.. even though I already have an AVX mount. I want to take a good picture of M1 the Crab but I'm limited by payload capacity... doesn't help having a heavy 9.25inch OTA either. Managed to get a rough unguided monochrome image... best I can do at the moment.
      Clear skies

Hi Wido, hope you and your family are well. Without going into politics, I have a question. I’ve seen reports of mass protests against “mandates” in Netherlands. Is that true?

Hi there, yes. We are the only country that had a complete lockdown during Xmas. As it is the third one, people and especially the entrepreneurs and those working in the cultural sector are broke and fed up. I can understand the decision as omikron was a huge unknown. Luckily, the figures show that it's much milder than delta so I'm hopeful. Cheers!
