A very good and clear sum-up of what is needed. That glimpse at boot fitting guide on the wall was a nice touch also. Trying to figure out the winter mountaineering boots for some time now.

Would you say that Nepal Trango Tower extreme would be sufficient? I have a pair of La Sportiva G2s but they feel like overkill for Mont Blanc.

Hey there, great video! I wonder what your opinion is about the La Sportiva Batura 2.0, which I purchased recently for quite cheap. It's a B3 shoe - I wonder how it compares to the Nepal Extreme, weightwise. I have used it in Austrian mountains (Großglockner), and it peformed well there, eventhough I think it's more of an Ice climbing boot (so I was told). I find it so stiff and cumbersome... :/ I don't know whether this would work on Mt. Blanc...

Actually I think it would be perfect for Mont Blanc as long as you find it comfortable. B3 boots are always going to feel a bit cumbersome on the trail, it's the price you pay for having extra support when cramponning.

Is the scarpa phantom 6000 OK?

I think is too much, you probably will be overheated. May be not in winter but I think the phantom tech would be a better choice.

For extremely wide feet, is there any option for B2 and B3 Boot? 😢

Hey! I have very wide foot aswell. For a B3 I have used the Sirius II Gtx by Hanwag. I've heard Mammut and Scarpa fit wider too but I have less experience with them!

Try Scarpa - for summer alpinism probably the Ribelle line, Or you can try Scarpa Phantom Tech for pretty light B3 boot (which might be even wider than Ribelle). Also consider taking warmer shoe (like Phantom Tech) with thiner socks - that might also add some milimeter of extra space in the toebox compared to thicker socks.

Is a b3 boot with a c2 crampon ok for mont blanc??

    • @EduardoBach01

B3s should take any kind of crampons.

I understand the perspective of guides but it seems a bit old-schooled even for 5 year old video. The technology is evolving and people are embracing lighter weight approach. "In 90% of conditions B2 will be fine but just take these stiff boots weighting 1kg per boot just in case" - then it's no wonder that you will get tired and your feet will be trashed on the decent. Much better advice would be to check the weather forecast and only if it seems pretty cold, opt for the heavy B3 boots. "If anyone's crampons end up coming out of the boot, it will be the guy in B2." - Isn't it rather someone who don't fit their crampons properly in advance or doesn't tighten them up on the mountain?
I know - give people the big hammer of heavy B3 bots and you don't have to worry about their equipment as a guide. But you are forgetting that part that if you would care, double check weather forecast, crampon setup etc. you would give the clients very often more pleasant experience.

Actually there were just as many lightweight mountaineering boots on the market five years ago as there are now. Many B2 boots are absolutely fine for Mont Blanc in good conditions and take crampons very well, but they are more flexible by definition and therefore slightly more likely to have crampons come off. It's certainly very rare for this to happen with B2 boots - but it's even rarer with B3 boots. B3 boots are less convenient on the approach trail , but give better support for cramponning up icy slopes, so I don't think one trashes your feet any more than the other.
I realise the video is somewhat amateurish but I was trying to give useful advice based on my experience, and the B3 boots I suggest using are the ones I wear myself on Mont Blanc and the ones we rent to our clients. I really don't know why you would think we only do this because we can't be bothered to double check the weather forecast or set up the crampons correctly. John Taylor / MBG.
