    The seat-lock being ugly is a feature. Ugly bikes rarely get stolen. You see this in bike heavy areas, where a very common and effective way to keep new bikes from being stolen (beyond just a good lock) is to deliberately make it ugly. No one wants to buy an ugly bike.

    • @98Zai
      @98Zai Месяц назад +7

      That's actually a great tip lol. If they have to do some amount of work to be able to sell them, it's not worth it.
      So in this case, the bike appears to be missing a seat. You can also remove other things, like the handle bars if you're storing your bike for a little while. I have two bikes, one is a super cheap rusty single gear that I always bring into town.

      My bicycle has mismatched colors, scuffed frame, and overall looks different. It is not a generic bicycle that's a dime a dozen, so that makes it unattractive to thieves. Can't easily sell that, and getting parts for it is a pain because this is not a standard bicycle in my country - it's an import from another. Sure, a lot of stuff fits just fine, but plenty enough doesn't.
      The bicycle overall is also around 40 years old, give or take half a decade or so, so yeah.

    • @PCDelorian
      @PCDelorian Месяц назад +4

      I know a guy who went out with a another guy and despite his bike being older and worth considerably less, his bike was "nicer" in that it wasn't scratched and had no damage or rust. Even though the bike was worth less than half the other guys new, his had a couple of scratches and his chain was old and needed replacing, they stole the one that was worth less because it was nicer (despite also having a better lock). Bike thieves rarely know much about bikes and if it looks poor quality or ugly in some way, they aren't doing a service to check it nor a market survey, meanwhile the reverse is true if it looks old and beat-up. Care about what makes a bike comfortable or quality but try to avoid cosmetic improvements, they don't improve your enjoyment nor its practicality but they do increase the likelihood some thief will think its a better bike and worth nicking.

      I’m using the Foldylock myself. Because endurance road bikes are designed now with extra mounts on the downtube I use the extra mounts to permanently mount a lock on my road bike without giving up space for my water bottles. I often get side eyes from my fellow roadies because “extra weight” but it means I don’t have to wear a backpack on my longer rides and I need to stop to refill my water bottles or I come across a bakery that looks interesting. And for my commuter bikes I’m able to use all the space in my panniers for groceries.

    Conceptwise I like the seat lock thing because 'oh hey the thief took bolt cutters thorugh or drilled out the lock or whatever... now they have a bike with no seat.' Won't stop someone who's just taking bikes andthrowing them in a truck or van orwhatever but it in theory may keep someone who's just walking through from riding off on the thing.
    Honestly, that rear camera? I don't even want it for a bike. I want it for an electronics project.

    • @sandy_knight

      Even if you have a getaway vehicle you (or someone down the chain) will still need to replace the seat before anyone will want it. If its a high end bike then sure, its worth the extra effort to replace the seat but who's putting this on a high end bike!?
      In my experience thieves will just cut a high end bike in half and sell the untraceable components for a couple of grand, so no lock is going to save you...

LPL even commended it for the upgraded core. Super convenient, never rattles around, and I barely notice the weight. Get the lobster lock over that seat thing (if you can fit it on your frame) its cheaper, more robust, and so much easier to lock and unlock. No lock protects your bike, but seeing 2 steel bars going around your frame certainly helps...

    Someone else probably mentioned this, but the spring on the Mongoose isn’t a steering damper, it’s to keep the front wheel from flopping around when it’s up on the kickstand. You see them on cargo and touring bikes that have heavy rear loads. Because of the location of the kickstand and the amount of weight on the rear of the bike, the front wheel will always be up in the air when the bike is on the kickstand. A flopping front wheel can cause the bike to tip over (not good for heavy cargo or touring bikes).

    The big difference on the seat lock is that if an thieve use an angled grinder to cut the lock (destroying it) he will have no seat to to ride!!!! Yes it is ugly as hell, but with a big appeal being integrated as damaging the lock, means damaging the seat.

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost Месяц назад +4

    Seatylock: kinda takes the old "taking the saddle" way of preventing opportunistic thefts method to the next level. So the real benefit not really touched upon is that a thief that steals this won't have a secure seat. Not that big of an issue if they really really want your specific bike, but it might deter them from picking yours over the next bike in the bikerack. Thieves usually want an easy payday, so any hassle after freeing it up is effective, that's why thing like locking through the spokes where the valve is works well too; with the violence required to break it open, there's a good chance the valve will break, so more hassle afterwards.

    I have a review bike camera similar to the won you are showing in this video. I didn’t install mines on the handle bars. I installed mines in the middle where you tighten down the fork and I have no problem with the video cutting off and on when moving it and I have no problems seeing the picture.

    I think the rearview camera is a decent idea, it's just poorly executed. It's tough to get a perfect angle on your mirror without your body getting in the way of what you want to see. Might be good for commuting when you don't care too much about extra weight and looking like a dork. Someone should make a good screen that wirelessly connects to existing rearview cameras.

    As someone who spends a decent amount of time in nyc, a lock that removes the bike seat is a good idea because if someone steals it, they won’t have the seat (assuming breaking the lock, breaks the seat) which would deter a surprisingly large amount of people who would just want to joy ride it for a few hours and ditch it somewhere

    I added a handle to my long tail cargo bike, I think Yuba makes it, and while it's designed for what you were seeing the seat handle as being for, on such a heavy setup it's super handy just for moving the back end of the bike around.

  • @christophermorin9036

    I like the bike seaty lock AND the camera. The Seaty Lock is a good deal because if you want a decent seat and a decent lock, you're gonna end up spending $100 anyway.
    And as for the rear view camera, I am all for it. I am on the bigger side, but even when I WASN'T big, I never had a good experience with mirrors. Put them on the ends of handlebars? They get smacked on something and broken. Put them further in on the bars? Enjoy looking at your arms and shoulders. Hang them under your handlebars to avoid staring at your torso? Hope you like looking at your thighs. Mirrors on bikes just DO NOT WORK. Gimme that camera. I'll tape a cardboard hood over the screen if I wanna see it outdoors.

    One potentially cool use for the backup camera would be if it had a starlight camera (super good low light performance) and you used it at night; You usually don't have a bright tail light so might be better than a mirror there. I'm pulling at strings here.

    I have the seatylock on my girlfriends bicycle because regardless of what you think of its look, it solves a huge problem with bike locks: where are you going to mount it? While also solving the major issue of most new bicycles sold in USA: saddles too narrow. For practical commuting purposes in lower risk areas, this is an excellent option.

    That reverse camera is probably for a tuktuk. They have a handlebar but 3 wheels and 2-3 passengers in the way of seeing behind you. You also have a roof over you so the screen might be ok. You wouldn't want to mount one to the windscreen because it would just fall on the road with the terrible suspension and rough Thai roads.

    In the Netherlands it's not uncommon to take the bike seat with you. Doesn't happen very often, but it's a deterrent for people to take your bike if a perfectly fine one is right next to it. It's not about being impossible to steal, but about being less desirable to steal than the bike right next to yours.
