This man will continue to fight the battle each day until his passing. I do the same. Everyday is a battle to not use or drink and to try and find comfort and joy in soberness. Mental health doesn’t judge or discriminate. It’s real. It’s universal.
Just program your mind not to think about it. It is all will power, nothing special, just talk to yourself and hold yourself. Easier than you think.

It's not just about resisting the urge to drink or take drugs, it's also about the demons in ones head, other stuff that maybe going on in ones life, self belief. Just because someone is famous or has money doesn't mean they live a charmed life. I hope for you and your loved ones that none of it ever happens to you.
I just watch a video of David from Distrubed say this past Feb he almost took his life.. it’s insane that people don’t want to talk about it and if they do people look at them like they are weak or insane.

@@marcusbiller867 Everything is willpower, but not everyone has high levels of it. I'm pretty good at it, I have good financial discipline and food discipline, but even I had trouble cutting back on drinking. I haven't quit altogether, but I never let myself progress to the point I became an alcoholic. I'm mostly cutting back due to calories, and it being a carcinogen, and the most important reason, I don't want to be an alcoholic like my dad. It's not easy, especially when you get bored. But if I can focus on other things, it's not too bad. Having a way to direct that energy.
James is the definition of a real one and one of the most iconic musicians ever. Nothing but respect for the guy.

We all do.. to be self aware like this and to be open and honest is something you hear people in the program say.. it’s a universal language. The 4th step in the 12 steps brings in a lot of self reflecting, it gets pounded into you to constantly call out your emotions, that way you can’t be in denial or be delusional.
I believe anyone in this life can benefit from the 12 steps if they legitimately applied themselves..

My life would not have been the same without your unique talent to translate otherwise hard to define feelings into sound. I am a 69 year old little grey haired grandmother but when I play your music it gives an ageless and powerful experience which is priceless, and your efforts to create a universal bond of Metallica family takes effect. Try not to flog yourself with negative feedback, we are all screwed up in our own way. Make those 60s the best years of your life by continuing what you have been doing lately which is bringing joy with your concerts. You are creating a monumental legacy, and please enjoy it.

I absolutely respect the man (the musician too of course) for taking the time to reflect on his health - mentally and physically, regardless of the pressure of being in one of the world's biggest bands. He'll need more of those sessions, and he's aware.
And he's got the full support of his bandmates - his friends.

Love this man, there is waging wars against himself whilst producing some of the greatest music there is. I'm glad he feels strong enough to share his struggles so others can see that they can happen to anyone, even rock gods.

Man, James is genuinely a super humble dude, even though he’s one of the most famous front men of all-time. He’s grounded! I’ve always heard good things about fans meeting him.
He looks so much better now days than he did a few years ago when he relapsed and gained weight/grew his hair out. He just looked tired and worn down. I love seeing him like this now!

As a recovering addict n acholic I understand where James is coming from. I got clean n sober way before James did in 1994 and one the things that helped me in my struggles outside my fellowships was the music of Metallica and James lyrics. And to this day their music still helps me. Proud of Papa Het n thankful he was always willing to share his soul in his music.
Would love to hear a James solo record, he could go for all those classical/acoustic pieces he writes so well, some country stuff. Always felt he had that side to him, less (not at all) heavy but with his great voice and guitar writing/playing skills, he could make a fantastic record.
He has a perfect voice for something like that. Would love to see him branch out some!
James has always had an iron clad philosophy about side projects and he's stuck to it. He believes it's a big negative for Metallica. He's the only guy in the group who could actually pull it off and be successful. Instead, he's put those non-metal pieces in the Metallica framework. It definitely worked with Nothing Else Matters but that's about it. I think he knows his limitations and doesn't want to face the critical gaze of the world without the support of the band apparatus behind him.

@singleproppilot He's admitted it before. Lars knows arrangements and James's strength are riffs. Obviously it wouldn't work if James thought he knew better than Lars. But maybe he does and he's level headed enough to let Lars contribute. Probably the reason why Metallica has lasted so long.

James, there is nothing wrong with going to therapy/counseling to address certain issues, in order to make YOUR life, and those close to you (family/friends) better. I don't even listen to metal anymore, but any chance I get to hear James Hetfield talk, I take it. He's just one of those people that whether you agree with him or not, he's wise, kind, and just nice. I really like the dude. If he ever decides he doesn't want to do music, he would be a tremendous public speaker or even voice actor.

Metallica cancelled their show in New Zealand in 2019 because James went into rehab. I had a ticket for that show. They hadn't been to NZ since 2010 (and I didn't get to see them then). But you know what? I wasn't mad. Not one bit. Not angry, or sad or even disappointed. Metallica are my favorite band and James was a huge inspiration to me in my early days of guitar playing. Still my biggest inspiration. So I was actually just supportive of where he needed to go to get himself better. I love the guy.
He's looking real good now and I'm glad to see he came out of there kicking ass, releasing a new record, and getting on the road.
I keep getting surprised with the love that flows out of me every time i listen to james talk. This is a great man, the more so for being simple and humble as well as amazing

I work in recovery- as well as a recovering addict, and I can’t even begin to imagine being in recovery while being the front man in one of the biggest bands in the world.❤ I have absolutely No Doubt that at least part of the reason he decided to do this interview is for the simple fact of helping others… while most importantly healing himself 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yeah he definitely has some balls. I’ve been to rehab and I don’t talk about that with anyone. For him to be so public about it is inspiring. I would not have made it through rehab if I didn’t have Metallica on my iPod. The first few nights I didn’t sleep for even a second. So I listened to Metallica and thought of a better day.

Addiction is a problem that's hard to overcome the first time or the second time and a lot of people never get clean. I speak from my own life. My father was a alcoholic and i had a problem with coke and xtc. My father died a alcoholic and i have overcome my problem but get many other problems ( mind and body) . I wish Hetfield the best in life and keep on giving that great Metallica sound. Metallica best metal / Rock band ever. Greetings from the Netherlands

When you have heart failure, you don’t go to the hospital once and are cured forever.
When you have Crohn’s disease, you manage every part of your life the best you can and accept that you’ll have flare-ups sometimes.
Only when you have addiction do people expect you to need help once and needing it again is a failure. You should hurry up and decide to be fine on your own. We say things like “reach out” and “get help” - but when people do, we make a spectacle of it.
In a way that we never do for any other chronic condition…
Het is always honest, straight forward, and true to himself and I really do respect that about him.
James is a catalyst, especially for men, to not be ashamed to show and share your feelings and advocate the importance of mental health. That said, WHAT HAPPENED? Mental or emotional breakdown? Substance(s) relapse? I respect privacy and owe to him and his family not to pry but some of those details and method of recovery could be quite helpful to others who may be struggling. Very happy for him and still bringing it.
The personal detail of any individual’s ‘breakdown’ are less relevant than the acceptance and belief in finding a different, healthier way to ‘cope’.
He stands, writes and sings from a stance that reflects back his own experiences and perceptions, remains humble, carries the burden of what he sees and then loses himself in a rabbit hole.
We all have our own triggers and ergo our own path to recovery.
What’s important is that we are reminded there is a path to recovery and, perhaps, even just that there are always steps to a better way, and always changes to our journey, we just need to take them ☺️

I think many people (especially musicians) to get sober, but if you’re not staying busy or moving in some way, almost constantly.. staying sober is a challenge. Maybe it’s like some dopamine fix where everything seems new, or productive.. but the second you slow down or stop.. these haunting thoughts come. You may exhaust yourself or work til you break, but the fear of stopping or slowing down is greater because it’s so easy to just reach for a substance.

When you think about it, you can use this way of thinking in all aspects of your life, even if you do not use or drink. Being well in your own head comes first. If you dont have a functioning relatively happy self, nobody around you will be happy.

This is why people should get help if they need it. These guys deal with so much shit and everyone wanting a piece of them it’s no surprise why Kirk Hammett doesn’t really want his kids in this life. I remember back then, I saw a video of Metallica playing live. I saw James and I could tell he was struggling. I didn't know about what or why I thought it, but it was very obvious to me. A few days later I heard that he had gone back to rehab.
Metallica and their music, and specifically James, have been integral to helping my mental health through the years. So I want nothing more than to see them healthy and strong, and prioritizing themselves and their healths and families. The Metallica family will be here for them when they get better.
Also, I'm a couple of weeks from watching them live again, and I am insanely excited.
Hetfield is the reason I picked up a guitar.

I could not imagine the pressure of being the front man of the biggest metal band ever, in front of thousands of people every other night, traveling all over the world, and trying to raise a family and have a normal life at the same time. Just thinking about it makes me want to grab a drink and hide.
Imagine having a textbook bad fight with your partner, the kids have a lot going on, you’re worked up and then Friday comes and you have to shut it off, get on a plane and step out on stage at a sporting arena where everyone is watching you on the jumbo screens and everyone in the pit is 10 feet away scrutinizing and filming your every action. You can’t show anything other than high spirit and you have to perform at the absolute top of your game
Then Monday comes and you have to go right back to family mode and figure it out. You can’t bring the excitement or stresses of the weekend back home with you
Repeat this for decades and then call your doctor

The only musician i know that waits for the riffs and melodies from his other bandmembers… and then adds lyrics. I would like to see his lyric progression but it seems top secret.
TOOL has a similar method. Pretty interesting how some vocalists/songwriters capture their ideas in different ways.
Addiction is a real disease! I know firsthand as I went to treatment a year ago and still struggle with it!

If James isn’t an inspiration then I don’t know who is,I’ve followed these guys from the beginning,saw them in 87 and then 89,amazing power in the shows,bad habits are hard to break sometimes and it sometimes takes time,maybe a few times,but he’ll be just fine,he speaks like he’s a college professor and people should listen to his story,I’ve been sober 17 years after being a raging alcoholic my whole adult life,I missed my whole adult life,getting sober was the best thing that ever happened to me besides my Daughter and Grandchildren,stay positive everyone and Ride the Lightning🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

James is one of those few people in entertainment who leans more right-of-center in his political views...and of course, he can't come out and say that boldly or he'll be shamed and ridiculed for it. I for one, love him for it.
It's the right approach. Unfortunately, too many bands think they know better just because they have a big following. Expressing your political views is a lose lose proposition, especially on a stage. People don't fork out hundreds of dollars to hear a musician sermonize. Even if I agreed with his views, it's not what I came for.

It was pushed hard by media and politicians, it profited from terrifying people, it needlessly shut down many helpful and necessary aspects of life, all that resulted in millions of folks cracking up. IT ALL SUCKED and the more we learn looking back the more infuriating it gets. May the ones responsible for it all be held to account. It was clearly something the powerful “used” as a tool to increase their control over people. Sick bastards.

I first became aware of JH in '83-the picture on the back of KEA...a zitty-faced teenager full of piss and vinegar.
We have seen many phases/faces of his life...
For many years there was a mystique around them because there weren't any videos or radio airplay.
We knew about "Alcoholica"--they were proud partiers and drinkers.
We knew about the work ethic.
We have watched him grow up-going from someone running on pure adrenaline and attitude, to see him learn more about himself and the world.
I am so happy for him that he has (apparently) fund a sense of Peace in his life.
James should become my therapist. Sharing some honesty instead of just nodding “yes, I understand” Go James
