I know right! You can usually tell what process led to a certain aspect or trait being selected. But what series of pressures and selections led to a creature completely reforming itself after willingly going through an extremely vunerable life stage. It boggles the mind. Not to mention the fact that it evolved independantly on several occasions. Crazy stuff. Now I got some googlin to do, thanks. Lol
The Generous Degenerate Lol, i also did a bunch of googling after posting this. The theories are much more interesting than i even thought. If you type "how did metamorphosis evolve" the first article by scientific american is amazing. It takes like 4-5 paragraphs before you get to the good stuff, but then it gets extremely fascinating
The Generous Degenerate But the gist of it is that during development, the pre-larval stage sometimes doesn't absorb all it's yolk, so some eggs didn't make it to maturity. This led to some pre-larvae to develop the ability to eat the left-over yolk in their egg to get the nutrients and finish developing. But then came times where the yolk was too small for development, so when the pre-larvae still needed food, it ventured outside of the egg to find it. Once it had the nutrients, it could create a new "egg" and finish the development it would have done inside the egg in the first place. The stuff about how the second egg/cacoon evolved is a bit murkey to me, especially since its been a while since i read it lol But it was extremely beneficial, b/c it allowed the juveniles and adults to live on entirely different food sources, effectively doubling the amount of food available to that species. That's why there was such a strong selective pressure for animals to evolve this way. Presumably it's the same in tadpoles/frogs. They don't make a cacoon, so they're like half way there which is cool. Definitely give the article a read if you wanna know more, i barely even explained a fraction of what was there. It's really interesting
Disturbing thing to me was.. not once, not twice, but three times this creature just kinda chucked nearly half of its entire body as if it were a toenail clipping.
