Jesse, I am 41 years old and I happen to have arthritis on both side of my hips. What is your recommendation for the limitation on putting spins on the kicks?
It`s extremely painful if you strike the wrong part of your opponents leg like the blade of the shin but done correctly it is a devasting kick, a bit rough around the edges looking but very effective. Great video Sensei Enkamp, Respect !
Just turn the shin bone slightly into the kick and the foot is damaged. it's much easier to defend vs roundhouse kick over knee, but rare in karate. Not usually taught in championship preparation classes of Shinkiokushin. The attacker must aim very low to minimise the risk of broken bones.
That upwards motion on the calf was something I never knew about before. The majority of my fights rely on calf kicks, so it's great to learn something new like this. Thank you!
lol I searched up a webtoon called (how to fight/viral hit ) and the main charcater Hobin is known for his calf kick and funny enough you showed up, keep up the good work
Kick to the Calf with the right timing and angle is devastating. I love you videos they are very informative! I am from Shinkyokushinkai Philippines. Osu!
Yo, I did this to my bully at school, really effective he screamed and went on the floor but because it was the the leg my school went "Eh, just a minor leg injury" but it works SO well thanks Jesse!
this is basically a Pressure Point strike. If you land about 5 of them in a MMA fight, one of them will probably do significant Damage. If there were no gloves, you could do more Pressure Point punches. If you're wearing shoes, you could do more Pressure Point kicks. But the MMA uniform makes many of these strikes less useful..
Another great video. Now that we are mixed mode zoom/outdoor because of covid I am showing your videos to my students all the time. You are practically a Sensei at our dojo.
@@MeinNameistCarlos ok there where some weird autocorrection in my last post. I did mean that these kicks dont look like you would fight for selfdefence, rather for sports. I mean yeah if its a street fight and you can stop your opponent from grappling it can be efective to hurt him there. But if i would have to defend myself i would do something different, because the leg hurts like hell, especially after time, but neither do you have the time in a serious situation nor will a hurt but not broke or distortion leg stop a aggressor.
i was going to start this with "do you remember back in the 70s?" but then i remembered that not everyone is old anyway, back in the 70s, the sport of kickboxing was gaining some traction in the USA. there were many debates on rules, but everyone seemed to agree on banning leg kicks. the bottom line is that leg kicks mess you up and nearly no one has a clue on how to deal with them
I can attest it hurts like hell. I didn’t get kicked in the calf, but last week at class I pulled my right calf muscle. It was a sharp shooting pain that hurt beyond belief! I’m still limping from it. I imagine a full force kick to it would hurt way more than this pull
Brilliant move. This and the Sokoto Fumikomi to the knee are winners in a real fight. The knee/shin is possibly the most vulnerable part of the body that is difficult to defend.
Osu Sensei Jesse, If you aim more to the side of the calf, you can strike the common/superficial fibular nerve, which controls dorsi flexion of the foot, if you strike it hard, you will cause their foot to lose that action and they will have a numb-ish (technical term) foot. it has happened to me and it's god-awful. Also see MIchael Chandler vs Brent Primus. It demonstrates the result of this kick superbly. Osu
In muay thai they tend to do this a lot so I actually kind of like seeing a karate version of it it's interesting and makes me look at karate a little differently.
I trained in Shotokan karate in the 70’s ...and low leg kicks were hardly evident...many martial arts disciplines rushed to ‘rediscover’ these muay thai techniques after the UFC revealed what worked and what was finger painting
Found ur video informative n interesting calf leg kick n incorporating in combination with punches. Kudos. New subscriber to ur videos. Looking forward to more of ur strategies n techniques.
An idea for "How to..." series. How to come back to the martial arts after ACL injury. I know some people that had this kind of injury and still practice karate but it was a looong journey for them 🤔
Very effective kick although also very easilly checked/blocked doing more damage to the kickers leg. Not one I'd throw much in MMA maybe occasionally to mix up strikes but if it forms a pattern or any tells, very easilly blokced. All the opponent has to do is turn thier shin to angle on to your leg, they dont even need to lift the knee so its a very quick check.
Hello Jesse, I practice various kung-fu's from China, India, and Japan. While I did reach a 3rd degree black belt I feel like my basics are slipping, what videos would you recommend going from white belt techniques to black belt, kind of like a class?
Not so strange, it makes sense. I am accustomed to using the ball of the foot and using a cross-over footstep to get into position. I do like how you get an opponent to go round and round and then fake him out to deliver the kick. Just another tool for my tool box. I favor mixing in stuff from other arts to make my "point," pressure point. :) I favor using open hand when going to the opponents mug because it looks like a slap and does not LOOK so devasting especially when you push or draw back.
This kick does real damage when it hits properly one of the most underrated kicks for sure.. Can I be apart of your amazing family I think all of us could do with an amazing family like yours
So, by repeated hits in that area, particularly in the outside region as described, can this incapacitate your opponents leg or is this used as a distraction?
Thanks sensei. Just a question though, if u don’t mind answering, coming from a Thai boxing background, wouldn’t the kick be much more devastating if thrown with your shin rather than instep? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you 🙏 Osu.
As Master Ken would point out: and don't forget to kick to the groin 🦶🍒😳😫 Great video 👍 I recently saw some footage of a Japanese fighter named Kazushi or Kuzushi Sakuraba. He fought against one of the Gracies. Sakuraba kicked him real good (I think it was his legs) since Gracie lost balance, stayed down and went into the "lying turtle on the back" position just waiting for Sakuraba to come to him. But Sakuraba didn't fall for that and kicked him right on the calfs a dozen times before he did something spectacular. In the end Sakuraba won the fight.

I have got a questtion, does hook punch exist in traditional okinawa karate.
Anyway fantastic video as always😃
Yes, it’s called kagi-zuki and is present in multiple kata
In uechi ryu the hook punch is done with a tiger fist for better wrist alignment when hitting without gloves.
Que suerte tienes de tener un hermano con quien practicar.
Será por suerte que le ganaron a CONNOR como muchos "expertos" dicen. Excelente vídeo como muchos que este caballero publica. Oss.
It exists in traditional Karate ? Or it's just a modern Muay Thai /MMA technic ?
The inside calf kick is same way , hitting upwards diagonally upwards the opposite shoulder ?
Inside calf kick is better as a sweep by the ankle otherwise it could hurt you more than the opponent
