Thank you so much, my dog never wanted to get in the car. I tried all kinds of treats inside the car to get her to want to go up by herself and she had always refused. Until I did your method. In the matter of 20 minutes she was going in and out of the car freely with enthusiasm.
First time I’ve seen your channel: this is the first decent video I’ve seen on this problem. I’m midway through my second ‘car training’ programme with my 12 month Golden Retriever Dave. I’ll explain as it may help others:- I started when he was 10 months. Firstly just walking around the car (SUV) with doors closed, then with back door open, then with me sitting in the back with treats and kind words and using a sturdy ramp he walked up and sat beside me. Repeated but without the ramp and after four daily 15 minute sessions he jumped in; continued this for another week. Then one day we drove a short distance for a 60 minute walk…..on return to the car he TOTALLY REFUSED to jump in so after another 30 minutes I had to ‘manhandle’ him into a rear door to drive home. I left it for a couple of weeks and started again (no ramp)…this time I used a tube of soft cheese (Primula…best ever!….just a small squirt). Right now after 5 days of 20 minute sessions he’s jumping in willingly sometimes without using cheese or treats every time. I’ll be doing this for at least 2 weeks as I think I went too quickly the first time. When I open the frig door and he sees the cheese and the leash in my hand he is keen to get out to the back of the car!! MY MESSAGE IS TAKE IT VERY SLOWLY OVER WEEKS NOT DAYS AND DO SHORT DAILY 20 MINUTE MAX SESSIONS. Fingers crossed🤞🇬🇧Cambridge UK. (I’d be very interested to hear of anyones success stories)
Absolutely amazing, thank you!! Been struggling with this for months. “Touch” is her favorite trick, so after 15 mins of this game and a bunch of canned chicken, she hopped in twice :)
@@KevinDugganctc unfortunately we had to take a trip to the vet and she’s getting spayed within the new few weeks so all progress has vanished :( BUT I’ll definitely continue working on this afterwards, it’s a great method
My dog doesn’t even respond to food rewards when he is out on walks let alone when trying to get in the car. He is a rescue border collie cross with abandonment issues. He walks low to the ground when walking and is very nervous and fearful, when it comes to getting in the car, he will lie on the ground and try and get out of his harness/lead (we’ve tried both) he gets so fearful that we will literally have to drag him to move which obviously is horrible to do to him because it’ll just cause more fear. We’ve tried so many things, his favourite toys, soothing music, treats and nothing calms him when he’s on walks/trying to get in the car. It isn’t a case of us needing to be patient or calm because we never shout and we can spend up to 2 hours trying to get him in. Please help, he has so much energy but he is only happy in the house/our garden but for a border collie we know this isn’t near enough exercise for him. Plus we want to be able to take him places and let him enjoy the world, but he really is only happy and content when he is at home :(
Oh man! Sorry to hear that. You'll probably need to spend a lot of time jack potting him once he is in the car too to help with that association. There may be lots of steps to fully get him comfortable.

My Dane pup will get her front paws in but still after 2 weeks of this exercise refuses to go further. Suggestions? 😬
Finally a Newfie!! Mine is 7 months old too won’t get in car! Thank you for the video!!
OMG... i wish he could help me. Im gonna try this. I feel like a wrestler every time i go to get my 90 lb lab in the car. We struggle every time.

Awesome! Once she is confidently jumping in, continue to take it slow. Go for very short rides and make sure it continues to predict awesome stuff.

I just watch you because you voice is smooth and is nice to listen to but this is good for dog owners.

Any suggestions for a dog who is not motivated by food rewards?
Vermont Homesteading this is our issue ! He couldn’t care less for treats whilst training or walking. Any luck as yet ?

Def going to try this. Just got a rescue and he is absolutely terrified to get in the car. Lays on the ground when we approach it lol

What is that bug running around 😬
How about getting the dog in the front seat? Its lower and I can keep the dog body surfing.
2:2 Gulp that spider
THANK YOU!!!!
You're welcome!
Worth a try I have a mastiff that is big and I cant keep lifting her big bum into the a honda pilot lol
How many hours would you say you had to work on this before the dog jumped into the back?
It took about 45 minutes for this one. I have done this with many dogs though where it's taken multiple sessions.
Nice!
