      I am loving buce, my sag, and the val I bought from you.
      The banana plants are nice, and I do love my lilies I got from you, but being able to make my tanks look deeper with large java ferns up front, and tiny buce in the back... bacopsis in between, and val & sag....
      I have a few swords to help with the illusion as well.
      I now have a Native NC tank, exclusively planted with wild harvested aquatic plants from my last 2 years trips to NC. (And the only inhabitants are NC ramshorn snails and P paludosus).
      I have a Native Mexican tank, with the same (plants, fish, shrimp and snails captured along the Rio Grande, with a few purchased additions).
      Building ecosystems out of places I visit, is bringing me so much joy!
      And my floating plants definitely keep the water quality phenomenal!
      I do have to pay attention to the plants communicating their needs, since our tap water has gotten....bad.

    After my first year of serious aquatic gardening I've come to the same conclusion you mentioned 18:00 min in. I love all of my colorful stem plants, but they are fertilizer hogs. Moving forward I'm going to focus more on slower growing plants.
    Fish tank maintenance is a lot easier when you DON'T HAVE to do plant maintenance every week.

    This is great. I started with a lot of artificial plants, decorations. Found lots of decorations would flake off paint, so pulled all of that stuff, added driftwood, followed by rocks / live plants. Very low tech tank, so went through a lot of trial and error. At first had no idea about plants melting...I kept throwing them out thinking they were dead. Tried a few different fertilizers. Some brought on algae, some didn't. Have learned so much since. Never realized you had so many details under your plant section. While I can't order plants from you here in Canada, that information would have saved me a great deal. Will be setting up a 50g planted tank soon. That info is going to be super helpful. PS. Your customer service is great. Candi helped me with some fish illnesses when I first came back into the hobby. Look forward to the day when we can buy from you here in Canada. For now, trying to support my LFS. We are lucky to have a few really good ones where I live.

      There are many cichlids that will not dig up plants. For example, apistogramma, rams, angel fish, kribensis, keyhole, and discus all come to mind. There are also cichlids from Lake Tanganyika like julidochromis that would do well with plants as long as the water is hard and has minerals. ~ Zenzo

    Pogo "Octopus" grows so fast and doesn't stop, my tank is 24" deep and when it gets to the top it just lays on the surface and keeps going. you HAVE to trim it, or don't. My fish uproot it and now it just grows in a giant floating tangled mass, I was going to remove some but the EBA's lay in it to sleep so now I just leave it alone. I don't fertilize. The java moss mats are great, my Uaru treats it like a plate of salad and I remove the wire mesh when its clean. 😂

    Been in the hobby on and off for 40 years, I've always had live plants, never occurred to me to do anything else yet even after all these years some plants I'm just unable to keep. I have tried Java Fern probably half a dozen times. It does well for maybe a month then just withers away for no apparent reason. Same with moss - I've tried several varieties, people warn me, don't put moss in your tank it just grows like a weed and invades everything. Not in my tanks it doesn't, it just goes brown and dissolves away. I've even had Pogostemon erectus and Pogostemon octopus side by side in the same tank - erectus just dies on me, octopus needs trimming every week. I still have no idea why this happens.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  3 месяца назад +1

      Pogostemon erectus is only offered in emersed form and is hard to convert. It's a plant we don't sell as most people struggle with that conversion. If you can get it submerged grown it's pretty easy. Plants really aren't any different than cooking. You just need to learn the techniques and ingredients. Everyone might say chocolate chip cookies are so easy to make. but when I make them they are thin and crispy. My wife can look at a cookie and tell you, oh they didn't use softened butter, or they used salted butter and still added salt. Or the temp in the oven was wrong or they used the wrong king of baking sheet etc.
      So if you reframe your mind from, they don't work for me, to I'm not doing what the recipe calls for it allows you to figure out what goes wrong. In general Java ferns want potassium and minerals in the water. And a good water column fertilizer on top of that.

    Plants like fish don't like many water changes/ changes to their environment causes them to wither, so only if U have to do only a partial water change, your tanks eco system should be efficient and cycled and seasoned for best results ,I don't even use fertilizer just the waste of the animals is enough, less is more.

    Seasoned gravel filled with fish poop will grow anything

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  3 месяца назад +1

      I think that's a mostly true statement. However I don't believe it can sustain it. If you took a tank that had really thick mulm in the gravel from 2 years of feeding and planted tons of sword plants. I'd wager within a year they'd be running out of food and need supplementation. You can however find a balance of really slow growing plants and the right fish foods to keep plants mostly looking good.
      I'd also say that floating plants and a seasoned tank can run out in like 6 weeks sometimes. So while I generally agree that a well seasoned tank is super helpful, it can lead a reader down a path of failure if they don't understand the whole picture.
