- Charge-Mode is a feature Prius Prime offers where the gas-engine can be used to recharge the battery-pack. In most cases, this isn't as efficient of a charging option as just using the plug. But when you are on a road-trip and don't have an outlet available, being able to generate electricity while cruising on the highway can be helpful. That electricity can be used later when you are driving short distances at your destination. That avoidance of engine warm-up is overall beneficial, especially when taking advantage of steady-speed driving to charge.
Watch data presented on that phone-app (vertical display on the right) connected to the car using an aftermarket ODB-II reader. It provides detail about power coming from the engine and how much of that is diverted to the generator while charging.
Note overall results upon reaching completion.
Also, notice the turn-around about halfway through the drive. This helped to take into account any influence of wind or hills.

Pd: it is a big upgrade talking about noise and consumption from prius 3 PHEV?
Charge-Mode is new to this latest generation. Noise reduction is difficult to quantify. Consumption upgrade is obvious, in both EV and HV modes.
Hey quick question. What is your higher mileage on a single tank of gas?
I had to fill up early due to an upcoming long trip, but my best "tank" was 2,674 miles. That took 7.896 gallons. (It has a 11.4 gallon capacity.)
priusguru how much electricity would you said you use during that time?
It's hard to really know. That was an 11-week stretch, recharging overnight and at work. But many of those weekday drives ended with electricity still remaining. And on the weekends, it varies a lot. I even carried kayaks on top one of those days.
Mine does a little over 1,000 miles with one tank of gas, and that’s going in electric about 40%
How many KW the motor generator put into the battery while idling? Thanks.
The entire EV capacity could be recharged using Charge-Mode, which is about 6 kWh. Done while idling is inefficient, while driving is a much better use of engine power-balance, but it is still possible.

I have no idea. While driving, the rate is actually double that of a plug connection.
@@john1701a yeah, I can see from your video its about 6 to 7KW so I was wondering how much It is while idling.

How do you access charge mode or does it just happen when driving?
Holding the HV/EV toggle button for at least 3 seconds will start Charge-Mode. (It's not automatic.)
priusguru thanks. Any downside to this method during long drives and separately does the dash indicate a light for charge mode?
Conversion of mechanical power to electrical power does incur a loss, so overall MPG could be lower if not used well.
That "CHG MODE" light by the temperature readout is the indicator for Charge-Mode.
