Bean Hotpot [Upgraded!] - Stardew Valley Recipe #14

  • Hello Everyone, I hope you're having a good day!
    I have changed things up slightly for this next addition to the Stardew Valley Recipe series. The in-game pixel art for the Bean Hotpot looked a little funky, and I couldn't think of a tasty was to make an exact replica. So I decided to really stretch the creative freedom of this challenge and made an upgraded version of the recipe! I have stayed true to the description as best I can though, by using traditional Asian hotpot ingredients in the soup and by using a LOT of green beans!

    🧾INGREDIENTS🧾
    🔹 5 x Garlic Cloves
    🔹 1 x Red Chilli
    🔹 1/2 tsp Szechuan Peppercorns
    🔹 8 x Cardamom Pods
    🔹 2 x Bay Leaves
    🔹 1 tsp Ground Ginger
    🔹 1/2 Tbsp Dark Soy Sauce (I used 1 Tbsp in the video but it was too much)
    🔹 1/2 tsp Sesame Oil
    🔹 400g Green Bean Husks
    🔹 Handful Green Bean Beans
    🔹 Drizzle of Cream
    👨‍🍳METHOD👩‍🍳
    🔸 Fry the Szechuan peppercorns, cardamom pods and bay leaves in 1 Tbsp oil for 2 minutes. Then add in the sliced garlic and chilli, mix well and cook for 5 minutes. Pour 400mL of water into the pan and allow everything to simmer for 20 minutes.
    🔸 De-bean 500g of fresh green beans, then cut the tips off of the bean husks (The end that is connected to the vine).
    🔸 Once the soup has simmered for 20 minutes, remove the bay leaves and cardamom pods, then add in 1/2 Tbsp dark soy sauce, 1/2 tsp sesame oil, 400mL of water and all of the bean husks. Simmer for 20 minutes.
    🔸 Blend the soup until all the husks have been broken up, then strain everything through a sieve.
    🔸 Season the soup with 1/2 tsp salt then pour into your serving bowls.
    🔸 Cover the beans with water and microwave on high for 2 minutes or until cooked. They should be tender and vibrantly green when done.

    This soup is quite spicy and aromatic due to the large amount of chilli, peppercorns and spices used in the dish, but I like this level of heat and depth of flavour! The salt added towards the end really helps round out the flavour and draw the heat back a bit. I'd recommend tasting before and after just so you can experience the change in flavour. Adding the cream can also help to quench the heat, so you can always add more if it gets too hot.
    However, the overriding flavour of this dish is the green bean, as it should be. The in-game recipe uses only green beans, so I really wanted to make it the star of the show, and I think I accomplished that well here. Removing the fibre also makes the dish much more pleasant to eat, as opposed to a thin soupy hotpot with a load of whole green beans thrown in.

    What Kind of beans are those? They almost look lke snow peas.
