  • Philippe is interested in how architecture can provide a glimpse into how people live all around the world. He travels to some of the most unique spots and culture on the planet to see what they have to offer. Today he is heading to the small village of Ponging in the state of Arunachal Pradech, a region in northeast India that is also spread over Bhutan, Burma, and Tibet. The Adi people, called the men of the hills, have learned to both survive and thrive off of bamboo, which is what their homes are made of in beautifully intricate patterns. Next, Philippe heads to Tiébélé in Burkina Faso to see the Royal Court of the Kassena people, before finally ending up at the Westman Islands in Iceland.

I used to live in a bamboo house over thirty years ago in Cambodia. The roof was made of grass, typically found in South East Asia. These types of houses are cooler than houses that are built by bricks but do not last long like the man said in the document. The roof built from grass is needed to be repaired after one or two years. One major enemy for the bamboo house is fire because it easily catches fire.

To the tribes of Northeast India bamboo is intertwined with our culture and DNA.
We build homes with bamboo. We make brooms and clean our homes with bamboo. We weave baskets, straps, fish traps, mats with bamboo. We cook our food in bamboo and we also even eat bamboo. The shoots we can ferment them, pickle them, dry them. Cook it with meat or on their own.

This is a very interesting presentation. And I admire how the Indians build a bamboo house using all natural products around their surroundings. No metal nails or cement. For the roof they use palm leaves with their tiny branch tied together to make it waterproof. After ten years or so, any rotten bamboo can be replaced easily. Bamboo is a grass that grows very fast from a few centimeters to six inches a day. These people claimed that cutting down one bamboo tree, 3-6 bamboo will grow to replace the one that was cut down. Like grass they are connected to each other through their roots !

What an interesting documentary. I had no idea that bamboo was so ecologically viable. 30% more Co2 than a wood tree! Amazing. But would bamboo houses be possible in other climates besides climates that are warm like NE India? I like the natural look of them soooo much more than cement houses, which are the majority where I live Greece. How would these house fare in snow and cold weather?

I moved to Queretaro at 79 in 2021, when USA became too deadly and expensive. I love this cool and safe city.
Thank God, I do not have to beg for donations. My pension takes care of all, and I always pay it forward to non-beggars. I have been visiting and ' in Mexico, mainly Acapulco
I married twice and one daughter at 37. I was 20, when I first visited Mexico. I moved at 79, but marriage was not in my life.
I loved Acapulco for over 61 years, and earthquakes were the deal breakers. Do not bring your stuff or store it,
Please keep your people, who cannot afford to leave legally in your country.
at 79, I called 1/800 GOT Junk to empty my 885 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment of almost 24 years. It was a nice area but became deadly and expensive. I was born and raised in |Chicago, and we do not play, if messed with by anyone. I did not sell anything due to the fake money and the deadly criminals. I was tired of heavily blocking doors, windows, air con. I slept with weapons and was always ready to protect myself in or outdoors.

It's beautiful to see different makes of houses but will it withstand the rainfall? The hail? The snow? What about extreme heat. The design is nice very lovely and the use of the material which can be recycled but my thing is how safe it is. If your housing people don't you want the people living in that house to be as safe as possible.....um live safe and know okay I, myself am going to be comfortable living under a build like this..... Because like mentioned your going to have to repair it over time how many times are you going to have to repair the said homes.....
